On digital theorizing, clickbait research, and the cumulative tradition

Abstract: The pursuit of novel and indigenous digital theories is a thought-provoking call by Grover and Lyytinen. Such a piece is direly needed, and we hope it will spark a reinvigoration of the field. However, despite its many merits and our alignment with its message, we have two comments or caveats for readers of their piece. These are?a) a need to re-emphasize the value of attending to the cumulative tradition in our pursuit of digital theorizing, and relatedly b) an unreflective reading of the paper may risk mobilizing IS scholarship towards clickbait research. We further highlight three anchors that future scholarship can consider in attending to these issues a) problematization anchor, b) implications anchor, and c) boundary-spanning anchor. With these points, we add more volume to amplify the message of G&L and offer suggestions for pursuing innovative digital theories that go beyond ephemeral theorizing. Collapse

Abstract: The GDPR introduced restrictive privacy-preserving measures, affecting the daily life of (online) consumers. Moreover, literature shows that privacy preferences are constantly evolving. This is the first study introducing a GDPR exercising-oriented approach to identify consumer privacy types. Based on a representative sample of the German online population, we cluster consumers according to their privacy importance ("intention to act") and GDPR knowledge ("ability to act") and derive four consumer privacy type clusters: fundamentalists, amateurs, pragmatists, and unconcerned. We investigate motivational factors for changing privacy settings and find significant differences between consumers' intentions and actions for selected factors. This provides evidence for the privacy paradox. Contrarily, intentions and actions align for other factors, which supports the hypothesis that actionbased consent might lower the privacy paradox. Finally, we suggest the development of standardized scales and corresponding clustering methodologies for consumer privacy type clustering to increase comparability over time and across populations. Abstract: This work presents insights into consumer preferences regarding Privacy ManagementSystems in the context of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The authors perform a Choice-Based Conjoint experiment with consumers (n = 589) to elicit preferences over four attributes and compute usage likelihoods for all product configurations. Results show that data sharing for marketing purposes and discounts are the most important attributes for consumers. Furthermore, consumers prefer digital access to privacy-related information, detailed rights management for data sharing and no data sharing for marketing purposes. Moreover, a cluster analysis reveals differing importance weights across clusters. The study concludes that incorporating consumer preferences into the design and development process of Privacy Management Systems could increase their use and effectiveness, ultimately strengthening consumers' privacy rights and companies' legal compliance. The authors suggest researching legal, business, and consumer requirements more holistically to converge these perspectives to improve Privacy Management Systems adoptions. Collapse

Abstract: IT vendors’ promises are likely to meet sound skepticism from prospective clients. If a particular technology is in vogue and seen as a “hype,” clients are under pressure to buy the technology while, at the same time, skepticism about its claimed benefits might be reinforced. Finding a balance between optimism and skepticism is essential. In this qualitative case study, we examine how an oil and gas supplier company in Norway deals with different pressures when adopting and subsequently implementing digital twin (DT) technologies. DTs offer the promise of creating a digital representation of the physical assets that can keep production facilities operating efficiently and optimally and, as such, have been heralded as enabling the next frontier of productivity improvements. Our results reveal a set of different pressures promoting the decision to adopt the hyped technology. Yet, when descended to the local context, the hype status of DTs evokes multilevel perception segmentation that hype interpreters maneuver by building trust. Based on this analysis, we propose a framework of trust-building mechanisms that contribute to a more nuanced understanding of adoption of hyped technologies and enable practitioners to deal with hype-induced perception obstacles. Abstract: This paper profiled blockchain studies in information systems (IS) journals from 2016 to 2022. Drawing on the 443 selected articles from 77 IS journals, we proposed a classification scheme from the IS perspective. Current blockchain articles are highly skewed, focusing on research agendas and system design. We proposed a theo­ retical framework by summarizing the current status of the blockchain literature and highlighting 15 future research questions for the IS research community. Abstract: Co-design is considered a critical success method for designing efficient solutions. However, this method presents challenges when working with wicked problems because participants come from different backgrounds and disciplines. Through a case study review, this study describes the operationalisation of the co-design approach to develop an Information Communication Technology (ICT) platform to address the complex, wicked problem faced in Water Sensitive Design (WSD), namely stakeholder engagement. The ICT platform aimed to integrate data from different disciplines to facilitate the collaboration and engagement of WSD stakeholders. Participants were involved in five different co-design cycles to reach a strategic solution. Abstract: Although sociomaterial theorizing has provided important insights into how digital technologies enable or constrain behavior in organizational contexts, there is a need to advance theory to better account for how digital technologies shape heterogeneous work practices in which distributed organizational actors use diverse technology portfolios to collaboratively produce and consume information. Against that backdrop, we draw on the distinction between digital mediation and digital representation to investigate tensions in how actors transfer information across organizational and technological boundaries, how they translate information into meaning, and how they eventually transform information into action in digitalized work. We illustrate and develop this framing through detailed analyses of digitally enabled, condition-based maintenance of equipment in a mining context. Drawing on these analyses and extant literature, we advance theory on tensions in how digital technologies are implicated in producing and consuming information in today’s increasingly heterogeneous work practices. Abstract: Digital technologies have enriched various consumer shopping patterns across multiple contexts and channels. Smartphones, as the most daily dependent device, have altered and assisted individual shopping decisions in omnichannel retailing. Drawing on the uses and gratifications theory, this research investigates emerging smartphone uses and consumers’ corresponding gratifications in shopping centers. Following a sequential mixedmethods approach, we first conducted semi-structured interviews with forty-three shoppers followed by a tar­ geted survey in the similar fields. The findings allowed us to group nine specific smartphone uses into utilitarian, hedonic and social gratifications; moreover, both utilitarian and hedonic gratifications reduce state anxiety whereas social gratifications do not impact perceived anxiety. Consequently, a reduced level of state anxiety from achieved gratifications will significantly enhance consumer’s purchase intentions. We offer insightful theoretical contributions and implications to marketing practitioners. Collapse

Abstract: The continuous information security failures in organizations have led focus toward organizational culture. It is argued that the development of culture of information security would subsequently lead to a secure organization. However, limited studies have been conducted to understand information security culture. This study aims to understand information security culture and its impact on success with information security efforts in an or­ ganization. The research model is based on the theory of primary message systems, which is an established theory from the anthropology discipline. We followed a mixed-methods research design involving two phases of the study. In the first phase, 25 semi-structured interviews with experienced cybersecurity practitioners were conducted to develop the research model. The second phase empirically validated the research model using survey data from 473 participants who completed a web-based survey in Southeast USA from multiple com­ panies. For data analysis, we employed Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modeling using SmartPLS. Our findings indicate that group cohesiveness, professional code, information security awareness, and informal work practices have significant influence on information security culture. Further, the security culture has positive impact on information security success perception. The contribution of this research lies in establishing the role of security culture and information security awareness in contributing toward information security success. Collapse
