Abstract: Cloud computing enables convenient and on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources. While cloud computing‘s ability to improve operational efficiency has gained much attention in the literature, there has been limited research on how it can help organizations achieve dynamic capabilities. Drawing from dynamic capabilities theory, we conducted a field study using a multiple case study design to examine the following research question: How do organizations achieve dynamic capabilities by using Cloud Computing? We develop a framework that explains how organizations respond to market dynamism by developing sense-and-response strategies that enable them to achieve dynamic capabilities using business process redesign, business network redesign, and business scope redefinition. We discuss how these transformations, in turn, improve organizational outcomes such as service effectiveness and efficiency. Our study also identifies factors that support and hinder the development of dynamic capabilities. Our study contributes to the literature on dynamic capabilities by examining how IT capabilities like cloud computing may accelerate the ability of an organization to achieve dynamic capabilities. We also identify transformational changes of business processes and inter-organizational networks that are enabled by cloud computing. Further, we identify how the essential characteristics of cloud computing support sense and respond strategies. Collapse

Abstract: The business value of investments in Information Systems (IS) has been, and is predicted to remain, one of the major research topics for IS researchers. While the vast majority of research papers on IS business value find empirical evidence in favour of both the operational and strategic relevance of IS, the fundamental question of the causal relationship between IS investments and business value remains partly unexplained. Three research tasks are essential requisites on the path towards addressing this epistemological question: the synthesis of existing knowledge, the identification of a lack of knowledge and the proposition of paths for closing the knowledge gaps. This paper considers each of these tasks. Research findings include that correlations between IS investments and productivity vary widely among companies and that the mismeasurement of IS investment impact may be rooted in delayed effects. Key limitations of current research are based on the ambiguity and fuzziness of IS business value, the neglected disaggregation of IS investments, and the unexplained process of creating internal and competitive value. Addressing the limitations we suggest research paths, such as the identification of synergy opportunities of IS assets, and the explanation of relationships between IS innovation and change in IS capabilities. Abstract: Local perspectives are important in designing effective enterprise integration solutions because they provide deep understanding of how each system may interact with others. Combining these local perspectives into a global solution is, however, equally important to develop a coherent enterprise integration blueprint. The participants in this exercise tend to be managers who have local but informal knowledge, and designers who may have a global but incomplete view that must be translated into formal models necessary for implementation. We develop a method and supporting modeling constructs aimed at such ‘designing-in-the-large’ that facilitates this bridging from local perspectives to global solutions, and from informal representations to formal models amenable for implementation. We present the result as design science outcomes – a Method and Modeling Constructs – that have benefited from multiple design-and-test cycles, and describe an authentic demonstration. Collapse

Abstract: We draw on information systems (IS) implementation, business process reengineering, and relationship management research to identify specific interventions that contribute to successful implementation of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system projects. These interventions are examined across multiple cases, which depict varying levels of performance outcomes. The analysis not only confirms the important role of top management found in early studies on IS implementation and information integration, but provides a more granular assessment of these executive level interventions. The study also shines light on the role of CRM system characteristics and cooperative cross-functional and inter-organizational relationships in facilitating successful implementation of CRM systems. Researchers and managers need to consider these interventions in the context of information systems that not only impact multiple functional units but also external business partners. The results of the study provide managers with insights into areas where they can successfully intervene to manage the behavioral aspects of CRM system projects, make effective resource allocation decisions, and better plan for system functionality and structural issues. The propositions derived from the data will provide scholars with impetus for further research in clarifying the formula for successful CRM system implementation. Collapse

Abstract: The reluctance to transmit bad news is a problem that is endemic to many organizations. When large projects go awry, it often takes weeks, months, and sometimes even years, before senior management becomes fully aware of what has happened. Accurate communication concerning a project and its status is therefore critical if organizations are to avoid costly and embarrassing debacles. This paper describes the results of an experiment designed to explore some key variables that may influence an individual's willingness to report bad news in an information systems project context. We extend a basic theoretical model derived from the whistle-blowing literature by considering relevant constructs from agency theory. We then test the entire model using a controlled experiment that employs a role-playing scenario. The results explain a significant portion of the variance in the reluctance to report negative status information. Implications for research and practice are discussed, along with directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Most existing econometric studies addressed the success factors of the Internet-based Business-to-Consumer (B2C) by analyzing one or two specific issues, while little has been done to offer a holistic view. Taking the System Dynamics (SD) perspective, this paper offers a qualitative model that illustrates and a formal model that simulates the dynamic process of building B2C in Chinese fast-growing industries. Preliminary results show that the performance of a traditional firm with B2C is not much higher than those without B2C. Order fulfillment quality, customer service quality, online store quality, product customization capability are suggested as the key leverage points for B2C performance improvement. Abstract: Research on the effectiveness of computer-mediated communication (CMC) has begun to explore the interaction between task type and communication mode. This study investigates the interaction between communication process goals and communication modes using teams with a shared history performing two tasks: idea-generation, requiring the conveyance of information, and problem-solving, requiring convergence on the best solution. Results reveal a significant interaction between communication mode and communication process goals. When the goal of the communication process was conveyance of information, CMC teams and face-to-face teams performed equally well. However, when the communication process goal involved convergence, face-to-face communication resulted in better performance than CMC. Collapse

Abstract: Empirical research into the novice-expert differences in information requirement analysis has recognized that the differences in knowledge and in modeling behaviors are the causes of differences in quality of requirement specifications. However, there is no cognitive process model available for explaining the interactions among the three factors: knowledge, modeling behaviors, and the quality of requirement specifications. On the basis of structure-mapping model of analogy, this article proposes a cognitive process model that views information requirement analysis as a process of conceptual mapping from the base structures (i.e., the knowledge structures of requirement analysis techniques) to the target structures (i.e., the knowledge structures of users’ problem statements). Due to the differences in knowledge, novice and expert information analysts use different types of cognitive processes, relation mapping by experts versus object-attribute mapping by novices, to model information requirements. The different cognitive processes lead to different modeling behaviors, and in turn the different modeling behaviors finally result in different qualities of requirement specifications. On the basis of the cognitive process model, two ways to improve the performance of novice information analysts are suggested: encouraging novice information analysts to think in terms of relations rather than objectattributes and providing domain-specific requirement analysis techniques that are similar to the problem domains in both relations and object-attributes.
