Abstract: Although the prices of cryptocurrencies remained volatile for the past decade, the factors that impact the price dynamics of the new type of investment instrument have not been fully identified yet. In this study, we recognize the dual nature of cryptocurrencies, that is, being a software program and a financial instrument, and examine the impact of software advancement on the price dynamics of cryptocurrencies. The open-source software (OSS) platform functionality enables social behaviors that we use as signals. Using data from the largest OSS platform, we establish the connection between open-source activities and the price movement of cryptocurrency. In particular, as project popularity (forks and watches) and users' feedback (issues) increase, the market price increases by 4.3 percent, 2.4 percent, and 4.4 percent per annum, respectively. On the contrary, the number of code corrections (pull requests) is negatively related to prices leading to a 5 percent annual price decrease. Our results suggest that OSS contributions create a perfect selection mechanism, where higher quality projects receive more developers' attention and user feedback, whereas lower quality projects do not, thus creating the separating equilibrium. Abstract: The success of open source software (OSS) projects depends on sustained contributions by developers who often display a wide variety of contribution patterns. Project leaders and stakeholders would strongly prefer that developers not only maintain but preferably increase their contributions over time as they gain experience. Corporations increasingly complement OSS developer motivations (such as fit in terms of shared values with the project community) by paying them to sustain contributions. However, practitioners argue whether payment helps or hurts projects because monetary compensation may dampen developer motivation in the long run, making it difficult for project leaders to understand what to expect from developers over time. Using Herzberg's motivation-hygiene framework, we explore how developers' perceptions of value fit with the project and being paid interact to determine the level of code contribution and its rate of change over time (i.e., growth). Using a survey of 564 developers across 431 projects on GitHub, we build a threelevel growth model explaining the code contribution and its growth over a six-month period. We find that value fit with the project positively influences both the level and growth of code contribution. However, there are notable differences among paid and unpaid developers in the impact of value fit on their level and growth in code contributions over time. The implications of our work will be of interest to researchers, practitioners, and organizations investing in open source projects. Business. In addition, he focuses on developing predictive-analytic tools to better utilize the strengths of the prediction-oriented approach (vis-à-vis the explanation-oriented approach) to create robust theory and policy. He has published in distinguished management research journals including the School of Business, University of Arkansas. He has published extensively in the information systems field, with over 300 refereed journal publications, with ten recent articles ranking him among the top four researchers globally. Dr. Grover has an h-index of 96 which is ranked in the top 5 in the field, and over 44,000 citations in Google Scholar. Thompson Reuters recognized him as one of 100 Highly Cited Scholars globally in all Business disciplines. He is senior editor for MISQ Executive, editor of the Journal of the Association for Information Systems Section on Path Breaking Research, and has served as senior editor for MIS Quarterly (2 terms), the Journal of the Association for Information Systems (2 terms), and The Data Base for Advances in Information Systems. Abstract: In digital entrepreneurship, the boundaries between young ventures and their surroundings are blurring. Digital startups face distributed entrepreneurial agency when involving third-party groups (i.e., individuals, crowd, and firms) in shared value creation processes. To date, research on third-party support focuses on the funding stage, and insights on performance determinants beyond fundraising are scarce. This study empirically investigates the relationship between different types of third-party support and digital venture survival in the blockchain ecosystem. Based on a unique, large-scale dataset of 1,677 digital ventures that conducted an initial coin offering (ICO) before July 2018, we show that professional advisor support is related to increased survival probability. Furthermore, involving crowd programmers and board interlocks are relevant determinants of digital venture survival. For board interlocks, we hypothesize and find support for an inverted U-shaped relationship with performance. Finally, we discuss implications for founders and investors and open new research avenues for IS research. Collapse

Through a longitudinal analysis of the company’s 65 GitHub open source repositories over a period of 6.5 years, we find a) support for a superlinear growth pattern, b) a structural split in the platform into two clusters, and c) indication that more active repositories will be more generative and in turn more popular. Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between third-party support of young ventures and crowd engagement in open source development projects grounded in signaling theory. It is centered on the empirical analysis of a multi-source secondary dataset of 697 firms which conducted an initial coin offering (ICO) and published their source code online. We find that internal third-party support by technology advisors is positively associated with crowd engagement for open source development projects. Contrary to our initial hypothesis, we find internal support by business advisors and prestigious external support to be negatively related to crowd participation. The study enhances our understanding of antecedents of software co-creation and contributes to IS literature on third-party endorsement in open innovation and ICOs. Collapse

Abstract: We propose a novel two-stage data-analytic modeling approach combining theories, statistical analysis, and optimization techniques to model player engagement as a function of motivation to maximize customer game-play via matching in the large and growing online video game industry. In the first stage, we build a hidden Markov model (HMM) based on theories of customer engagement and gamer motivation to capture the evolution of gamers’ latent engagement state and state-dependent participation behavior. We then calibrate the HMM using a longitudinal data set, obtained from a major international video gaming company, that contains detailed information on 1,309 randomly sampled gamers’ playing histories over a period of 29 months comprising more than 700,000 unique game rounds. We find that high-, medium-, and low-engagement-state gamers respond differently to motivations, such as feelings of effectance and need for challenge. In the second stage, we use the results from the first stage to develop a matching algorithm that learns (infers) the gamer’s current engagement state “on the fly” and exploits that learning to match the gamer to a round to maximize game-play. Our algorithm increases gamer game-play volume and frequency by 4%–8% conservatively, leading to economically significant revenue gains for the company. Collapse

Abstract: Collaboration through open superposition describes the dominant work orchestration mechanism observed in free (Libre) and open-source (FLOSS) software, wherein the software development occurs by the sequential layering of individual tasks. This work orchestration mechanism is different from the traditional idea of software development, where the focus is toward cowork and concurrent development facilitated by a modular software design architecture. Our study theorizes and examines the motivational mechanisms that operate within superposed work structures to influence the success of FLOSS projects. We also unearth the contextual conditions that may limit the influence of the superposed nature of work on FLOSS project success. Furthermore, given the increasing use of FLOSS by organizations, we investigate the specificities brought to these motivational mechanisms when FLOSS projects are owned by organizations. The results from our analysis of over 6,500 FLOSS projects hosted on GitHub support a nonlinear relationship between the degree of superposition and the success of the FLOSS project. Moreover, we find that the type of ownership moderates this nonlinear relationship such that (1) organizational ownership mitigates the influence of the degree of superposition on the success of the project and that (2) under organizational ownership, the optimal degree of superposition (the point at which the success of the project is at a maximum) is lower than for individual-owned projects. This research advances our understanding of work structures, motivation, and organizational participation in FLOSS environments by describing the influence of task structures on the success of projects. The study also provides FLOSS practitioners with valuable insights for modeling project task structures to facilitate their success. Collapse

Abstract: Open source software is increasingly becoming platform-based, thereby evolving and depending on an ecosystem of third-party developers and their contributions in the form of modules. Thus, platform-based open source software ecosystems (POSSE) are structured based on social networks formed by the relationships between third-party developers as well as technical networks formed by dependencies between the modules extending the platform core. Despite the socio-technical nature, little is known about the interplay of the social and the technical networks, and its influence on the evolution of POSSE. In this short paper, we present our planned study to uncover the socio-technical dynamics of POSSE. Abstract: Some authors in the literature have addressed knowledge transfer via weak ties between organization’s units which are themselves strongly tied inside (e.g. Hansen, 1999). Some others have investigated knowledge management among open-source-software (OSS) developers and discussed factors influencing knowledge transfer within development teams (e.g. Joshi and Sarker, 2006). In the domain of open source software (OSS) communities, more companies are now attempting to establish relationships to benefit from these potential value-creating communities; and project managers could in fact target different goals within software development teams including knowledge transfer within and between teams. We step forward to distinguish knowledge transfer within groups as opposed to knowledge transfer between groups; where relevant projects are bundled into separate strongly intra-connected groups. In knowledge management literature there is a trade-off between sparse network structures (Burt, 2000, 2002) versus dense network structures (Walker et al., 1997; Coleman, 1988). It is argued that the former facilitates the diffusion and generation of ideas among groups, while the latter affects the implementation of idea within each dense group. To our best knowledge, there has been no study to investigate the relationship between dense and sparse network structures. We propose that knowledge transfer within dense groups has a positive influence on knowledge transfer between sparse groups, in that intragroup density, group size, developers centrality and betweenness could impact intergroup coupling. To prove our hypothesis, we use a complex network of open source software (OSS) as the domain of interest, where developers represent nodes and two developers contributing to a project task represent a network tie. Developers contributing to tasks in groups other than their own can explore novel ideas via sharing knowledge, whereas developers contributing to tasks inside groups exploit ideas to improve those projects. We investigate the idea both analytically and empirically within 4 months, 8 months and 1 year lagged time, and finally show that intragroup density has a positive whereas developers’ centrality has a negative influence on intergroup coupling. Abstract: Grounding our study in the theories of coordination and network governance, we examine the influence that restricting the access to the source code has on the likelihood of survival of open source software projects. Furthermore, given the increasing shift of organizations towards adopting the open source development approach, we investigate the changes brought to the coordination mechanisms when open source projects are owned by organizations. The results from our analysis of about 6500 open source projects indicates the presence of a mixed relationship between the proportion of contributors who have write access and the survival of the project. Further, we find that ownership type (organization vs. individual) creates a crossover interaction that changes the nature of relationship between proportion of contributors who have write access and the survival of the project. The findings provide researchers and practitioners with insights for designing effective open source project teams that can sustain contributions. Collapse
