Abstract: Options thinking is a powerful approach for managing uncertainty and change in digital environments. It is recognised as a structured process for identifying, developing, and realising options into novel products and services. At Volvo Cars, we have learned it can also become a powerful instrument for innovation renewal, although it can be difficult to apply because it challenges existing firm practices. We elaborate this tension by presenting digital options strategizing as a process of applying options thinking to negotiate capability gaps and configure innovation resources. Our clinical study reveals that this facilitates innovation renewal through emergent processes, practice-oriented design, and opportunity-driven management. Collapse

Abstract: Notwithstanding the ubiquitous notion of the ‘digital mindset’ as a central way of thinking in digitalization, the literature lacks an unambiguous and integrative definition that allows further conceptualization of the phenomenon in a detailed manner. This paper defines and conceptualizes the digital mindset in a digital innovation context by an integration of different psychological perspectives and systematic analysis of digital innovation literature, cross-validated through an inductive expert survey (n=50). As a result, a coherent definition and conceptualization with 11 thinking patterns contribute to the research of the human side of digitalization and pave the way for future research avenues. Concluding our work, we highlight overlaps and draw parallels to related theoretical IS concepts and link our results to extant findings of IS research. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations are challenged to design solutions that increase the quality of life and well-being of elderly people because they inadequately understand the needs of this specific target group. Design thinking (DT) is a promising methodological framework for understanding the wants and needs of users. However, DT’s fast and highly interactive style is not fully inclusive, making it ill-suited for elderly participants. This research presents the SeniorDT framework, which affords opportunities for including elderly participants in a multi-stakeholder setting. Our framework is developed using the action design research methodology, which builds on field data gathered during a long-term DT project. On this basis, we derive theoretical and practical implications for conducting DT with older participants. Collapse

Abstract: By enabling more efficient information and knowledge sharing and reinforcing the shared goals for participating members, inter-organizational information technology (IT) becomes instrumental to both accomplishing coopetitive outcomes and avoiding the pitfalls of partner opportunism. We posit that as network social capital is accumulated in technology-enabled coopetition networks, collaboration will enhance the strategic value of outcomes and positively affect goal convergence among network users. Our findings illustrate that the role of technology in coopetition extends beyond facilitating knowledge exchange and may play a vital role in the strategic development of firms pursuing coopetitive options. Abstract: Organizations have increasingly begun to co-create innovations, conduct idea competitions, or conduct crowdsourcing initiatives with customers in online communities. Yet, many customer-integration methods fail to attract sufficient customer participation and engagement. We draw on previous research to identify customers’ experience as an important determinant of whether customer-integration initiatives succeed. However, research has rarely applied the notion of experience in the context of customer integration. We conduct a cross-disciplinary literature review to identify the factors that constitute a positive customer-integration experience and the implications of the customer-integration experience. Based on 141 papers from marketing, technology and innovation management, information systems, human-computer interaction, and psychology research, we derive a framework for customer-integration experience that integrates 22 conceptually different influencing factors, 15 implications, and their interrelatedness based on motivation-hygiene theory. The framework sheds light on the current state of research on customer-integration experience and identifies possibilities for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Employees increasingly want to participate in the decision-making processes of their organization. Approaches that facilitate organizational participation, such as internal crowdsourcing platforms, can achieve this. However, although organizations of various backgrounds should be able to reap benefits from such systems, in practice, implementation might fail due to an organizational culture built on hierarchical structures, low experience with employee participation and fixed processes. Taking a design science approach, we explore this relation in a five-month case study of a transformational process at a public organization. We design, implement and evaluate an information system for internal crowdsourcing. Based on the results from user-generated content analysis of the proposals and comments, survey data and several in-depth interviews, we observe an IT culture conflict that significantly affects system adoption and use. Our findings contribute to the discussion on theoretical and practical implications for design and implementation of information systems in organizational contexts. Collapse

Abstract: Prior information systems research highlights the vital role of information technology (IT) for innovation in firms. At the same time, innovation literature has shown that accessing and integrating knowledge from sources that reside outside the firm, such as customers, competitors, universities, or consultants, is critical to firms’ innovative success. In this paper, we draw on the knowledge-based view of the firm to investigate how search in external knowledge sources and information technology for knowledge absorption jointly influence process innovation performance. Our model is tested on a nine-year panel (2003–2011) of Swiss firms from a wide range of manufacturing industries. Using instrumental variables, and disaggregating by type of IT, we find that data access systems and network connectivity hold very different potential for the effective absorption of external knowledge, and the subsequent realized economic gains from process innovation. Against the backdrop of today’s digital transformation, our findings demonstrate how firms should coordinate strategies for sourcing external knowledge with specific IT investments in order to improve their innovation performance. Abstract: Crowdsourcing is currently attracting much attention from organisations for its competitive advantages over traditional work structures regarding how to utilise skills and labour and especially to harvest expertise and innovation. Prior research suggests that the decision to crowdsource cannot simply be based on perceived advantages; rather multiple factors should be considered. However, a structured account and integration of the most important decision factors is still lacking. This research fills the gap by providing a systematic literature review of the decision to crowdsource. Our results identify nine factors and sixteen sub-factors influencing this decision. These factors are structured into a decision framework concerning task, people, management, and environmental factors. Based on this framework, we give several recommendations for managers making the crowdsourcing decision. Collapse

Abstract: Adopting social software in organizational knowledge sharing activities has been argued to improve communication and outreach to key stakeholders. However, when dealing with social technologies in product development settings, organizations and individuals face a variety of barriers that hamper the success of these tools. Therefore a contextualized understanding of these challenges as well as the factors that influence these challenges is needed. By means of a qualitative, exploratory study we identify and map existing influencing factors with related challenges. The most significant concerns raised during the study concerned organizational activities, especially change management. Thirty-nine challenges were identified, classified and discussed in order to provide the product development community with practical evidence, and also to inform future research directions in managing social software in product development settings.
