Abstract: Multistores are data management systems that enable query processing across different and heterogeneous databases; besides the distribution of data, complexity factors like schema heterogeneity and data replication must be resolved through integration and data fusion activities. Our multistore solution relies on a dataspace to provide the user with an integrated view of the available data and enables the formulation and execution of GPSJ queries. In this paper, we propose a technique to optimize the execution of GPSJ queries by formulating and evaluating different execution plans on the multistore. In particular, we outline different strategies to carry out joins and data fusion by relying on different schema representations; then, a self-learning black-box cost model is used to estimate execution times and select the most efficient plan. The experiments assess the effectiveness of the cost model in choosing the best execution plan for the given queries and exploit multiple multistore benchmarks to investigate the factors that influence the performance of different plans. Abstract: Business Analytics has become a common term in all businesses. The importance of analytics in the modern business environment has made it necessary to include analytics as a foundational course for all business majors. There is much debate on what content should be taught in analytics courses and what is the role of computational skills versus the skills needed to interpret and communicate the results that are needed as part of the analytics process? These problems point to the essential difference between analytics and statistics. As we discuss in this paper, analytics is a process that employs statistical tools. We first discuss the business analytics process which we feel should be taught in all business analytics courses. We then propose a two-course sequence, Business Analytics I and Business Analytics II, to be taught as required courses in colleges of business. Collapse

Abstract: The generation of data has become one of the main drivers of modern healthcare. Like other industries, we see that the total amount of healthcare data is growing and in diversity. Thus, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used increasingly as a tool to turn this body of healthcare data into real value. But with AI and big data comes big risk, especially in terms of data privacy. Privacypreserving AI techniques are gaining in popularity to prevent patient privacy compromises while utilizing the potentials offered by AI. However, there is no clear understanding of the current research space of applying such privacypreserving techniques in healthcare. This paper aims to provide an understanding of these techniques and investigates the emerging research field of privacypreserving AI and its use in healthcare by reviewing the current multidisciplinary research to synthesize knowledge and derive future research directions in this regard. Abstract: The Intentional Analytics Model (IAM) has been recently envisioned as a new paradigm to couple OLAP and analytics. It relies on two basic ideas: (i) letting the user explore data by expressing her analysis intentions rather than the data she needs, and (ii) returning enhanced cubes, i.e., multidimensional data annotated with knowledge insights in the form of interesting model components (e.g., clusters). In this paper we contribute to give a proof-of-concept for the IAM vision by delivering an end-to-end implementation of describe, one of the five intention operators introduced by IAM. Among the research challenges left open in IAM, those we address are (i) automatically tuning the size of models (e.g., the number of clusters), (ii) devising a measure to estimate the interestingness of model components, (iii) selecting the most effective chart or graph for visualizing each enhanced cube depending on its features, and (iv) devising a visual metaphor to display enhanced cubes and interact with them. We assess the validity of our approach in terms of user effort for formulating intentions, effectiveness, efficiency, and scalability. Collapse

Abstract: Graphs are a fundamental structure that provides an intuitive abstraction for modeling and analyzing complex and highly interconnected data. Given the potential complexity of such data, some approaches proposed extending decision-support systems with multidimensional analysis capabilities over graphs. In this paper, we introduce TopoGraph, an end-to-end framwork for building and analyzing graph cubes. TopoGraph extends the existing graph cube models by defining new types of dimensions and measures and organizing them within a multidimensional space that guarantees multidimensional integrity constraints. This results in defining three new types of graph cubes: property graph cubes, topological graph cubes, and graph-structured cubes. Afterwards, we define the algebraic OLAP operations for such novel cubes. We implement and experimentally validate TopoGraph with different types of real-world datasets. Collapse

Abstract: An increasingly large number of sets of linked open data (LOD), typically in RDF format, are being published on the Semantic Web. Those data represent a potentially valuable resource for data analysis, particularly online analytical processing (OLAP), which often employs multidimensional (MD) models for conducting MD data analysis. Conducting MD analysis over LOD, however, is not a straightforward task. Most analysts will lack the technical skills to query LOD sources using an unfamiliar query language over data in a format not traditionally associated with MD data analysis. In this paper, we introduce the concept of the semantic web analysis graph (SWAG), which allows experts familiar with the LOD source to plot interesting courses of analysis for other users. We present a proof-of-concept prototype. The results of a usability study show that SWAGs may serve to build intuitive user interfaces. Collapse

Abstract: The role of information systems (IS) as representations of real-world systems is changing in an increasingly digitalized world, suggesting that conceptual modeling is losing its relevance to the IS field. We argue the opposite: Conceptual modeling research is more relevant to the IS field than ever, but it requires an update with new theory. We develop a new theoretical framework of conceptual modeling that delivers a fundamental shift in the assumptions that govern research in this area. This move can make traditional knowledge about conceptual modeling consistent with the emerging requirements of a digital world. Our framework draws attention to the role of conceptual modeling scripts as mediators between physical and digital realities. We identify new research questions about grammars, methods, scripts, agents, and contexts that are situated in intertwined physical and digital realities. We discuss several implications for conceptual modeling scholarship that relate to the necessity of developing new methods and grammars for conceptual modeling, broadening the methodological array of conceptual modeling scholarship, and considering new dependent variables. 1 Even though IS scholars have produced quality research on CM, the topic has remained a niche area within the IS community (Burton-Jones et al. 2017;Wand and Weber 2017), perhaps because of the somewhat narrow agenda CM researchers have pursued so far. The focus has been on a limited set of independent variables (e.g., ontological qualities), dependent variables (e.g., comprehension and understanding), and research methods (e.g., lab experiments). Abstract: The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology expands the boundary of business practice, inducing the emergence and application of business intelligence (BI) that has promoted the transformation of information techniques to optimize business decision and operation. However, there is a lack of theoretical consensus and measurement of the technology embedded in BI at present. This study exploratively develops the SenseTransform-Drive (STD) conceptual model of BI based on dynamic capabilities theory and organizational evolutionary theory to explain the core BI capabilities. By using factoring analysis and structural equation modeling analysis, we extract the latent constructs and empirically verify the validity of the STD model and further examine the correlation and mode of interaction of the three core BI capabilities and the impact of BI application on firm performance in the real economy with a sample contextual to Chinese business practices. The study results show that there are direct and high-intensity cumulative positive effects among the structural components of the STD conceptual model and BI-related dynamic capabilities can enhance operating efficiency and firm performance.
