Abstract: There has been an explosion in the popularity of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), drawing attention from practitioners and scholars alike since 2021. Each NFT denotes a digital asset in the likes of an artwork, a tweet, or a video that is recorded on the blockchain with a unique identifying code. In turn, the emergence of NFTs has transformed the digital asset landscape. With the rapid growth of the NFT market, there is a concern that the market is becoming increasingly homogenized due to readily available blockchain technologies and relatively low costs of NFT mints. To this end, this study attempts to elucidate how NFT portfolio homogenization affects transaction volume and variation in the marketplace. Particularly, we collected and analyzed a dataset of 2,004 collections comprising 7,151,515 NFTs from OpenSea, a leading NFT platform. We discovered significant inverted U-shaped relationships between NFT portfolio homogenization and transaction variation and transaction volume. Collapse

Abstract: Despite growing engagements between firms and nonmarket stakeholders—such as local communities and nongovernmental organizations —research has yet to examine the emergence of formal contracts between them. Given that a very large number of such contracts are theoretically possible but only a small number exist, we seek to understand what factors explain the use of contracts to govern some relationships between firms and nonmarket stakeholders but not others. We draw on transaction cost economics to study transactions wherein a nonmarket stakeholder provides a firm access to a valuable resource and to understand when these transactions are governed by formal contracts. We propose that, when a firm makes site-specific investments, a stakeholder’s use rights to the resource sought by the firm, the negative externalities generated by its use, and the stakeholder’s capacity for collective mobilization increase holdup risk for the firm and therefore the probability of a contract. We collect novel data on the location of indigenous communities and mines in Canada to identify a plausible exhaustive set of indigenous communities “at risk” of signing a contract with a mining firm. We test our hypotheses by relying, respectively, on historically assigned property rights over lands, the mine-community colocation in a watershed and proximity on transportation routes, and archival records of community mobilization events. We find support for our propositions by examining which of the 5,342 dyads formed by 459 indigenous communities and 98 firms signed 259 contracts between 1999 and 2013. Collapse

Abstract: With a large number of mobile apps in both iOS and Android platforms, app developers face a significant challenge in generating market demand. Given their resource constraints, app developers need insights into which features of their products are the most important drivers of demand. Categorizing features of an app as intrinsic or social, we focus on the role played by these features in different parts – head, body and tail – of the demand distribution. Using data from the iOS platform for a large number of apps, we extract intrinsic and social features from a panel of version release notes using a graphical model based machine learning algorithm. We determine how these extracted features impact the number of downloads. We find that social features increase the demand for tail and body apps, but hurt that of head apps. Further, a high number of intrinsic features hurt (increase) the demand for tail (head) apps. While social features by themselves hurt head apps, when combined with an increase in the intrinsic features, they help get the word out about the new capabilities. Our results underscore the heterogeneity in the effect of product features on app demand, and reveal the demand drivers and underlying consumer behavior in the app selection process. The key contribution of our research is to demonstrate that the choice of features made by app developers is critical to their success, and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach that works in all parts of the demand distribution. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze how the task and relationship conflicts that arise during the decision-making process within top management teams affect firm innovativeness, as well as the moderating role performed by behavioural integration. Specifically, we propose that behavioural integration helps to reduce the negative effects of conflict, reducing the likelihood of task conflict triggering relationship conflict and reinforcing the benefits of task conflict on firm innovativeness. Using a sample of 64 top management teams of Spanish firms, we find that relationship conflict fully mediates the negative effect of task conflict on firm innovativeness. In addition, behavioural integration moderates the direct effect of task conflict on firm innovativeness, making it more constructive. We conclude that high correlations between the dimensions of conflict will mask the potential benefits of task conflict, unless appropriate mechanisms to manage conflict exist within the top management team. Abstract: Mobile health (mHealth) are touted to have huge potential to broaden access, at low cost, to quality healthcare. We examine how awareness and use of mHealth develops among consumers in urban and rural India through a combination of individual traits related to mobile services and individual health characteristics. We conducted a survey in several parts of urban and rural India to develop a diversified sample that approximates the 2011 Indian Census. We find consumers’ appraisals of mobile serviceenabled empowerment, affects mHealth awareness/use through innovativeness toward mobile services. We also find that this mediation mechanism is stronger (1) for rural consumers who perceive themselves less vulnerable to chronic diseases and (2) for urban consumers who exhibit a higher regularity of preventive monitoring. Our study has implications on how mHealth awareness and use can be developed among consumers in urban and rural areas and in developing country contexts. Collapse

Abstract: A purported downside of social category diversity is decreased relationship focus (i.e., one’s focus on establishing a positive social bond with a coworker). However, we argue that this lack of relationship focus serves as a central mechanism that improves information processing even prior to interaction and, ultimately, decision-making performance in diverse settings. We introduce the construct of premeeting elaboration (i.e., the extent to which individuals consider their own and others’ perspectives in the anticipation of an interaction) and explore its link with social category diversity and relationship focus. Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrate that when disagreement occurs, social category diversity increases premeeting elaboration, with relationship focus as a central causal mechanism. Experiment 3 shows that premeeting elaboration has important implications for performance: disagreeing dyads with social category diversity elaborate more prior to meeting and, as a result, perform better on a decision-making task than those with social category homogeneity. We discuss the value of studying early-stage interaction and propose a reconsideration of the “downside” of social category diversity. Collapse

Abstract: Web site navigability refers to the degree to which a visitor can follow a Web site's hyperlink structure to successfully find information with efficiency and ease. In this study, we take a data-driven approach to measure Web site navigability using Web data readily available in organizations. Guided by information foraging and information-processing theories, we identify fundamental navigability dimensions that should be emphasized in metric development. Accordingly, we propose three data-driven metrics-namely, power, efficiency, and directness-that consider Web structure, usage, and content data to measure a Web site's navigability. We also develop a Web mining-based method that processes Web data to enable the calculation of the proposed metrics. We further implement a prototype system based on the Web mining-based method and use it to assess the navigability of two sizable, real-world Web sites with the metrics. To examine the analysis results by the metrics, we perform an evaluation study that involves these two sites and 248 voluntary participants. The evaluation results show that user performance and assessments are consistent with the analysis results revealed by our metrics. Our study demonstrates the viability and practical value of data-driven metrics for measuring Web site navigability, which can be used for evaluative, diagnostic, or predictive purposes. Collapse

Abstract: We use the new economic geography perspective to explore the impacts of the Internet on the market linkages of two manufacturing and two service IT industries, and the consequential effects on their agglomeration. We study IT industry agglomeration at the county level across the entire United States during 1998-2004. The industries that we study are: computer manufacturing, semiconductors manufacturing, software publishing, and computer systems design and services. We develop a model of industrial agglomeration based on market potential for growth which incorporates Internet adoption. Using nonlinear regression for 3,142 counties, we find evidence that Internet adoption is a significant determinant of the market potential and agglomeration for all four IT industries. We report that the effect of the Internet appears to be less important for firms located in urban counties. In big cities, the overall concentration of IT manufacturing industries is declining, while that of IT service industries is increasing. Collapse

Abstract: In this study we seek to understand the factors differentiating successful from unsuccessful software projects. This article develops and tests a model measuring the impact on software project performance of (1) software products’ design architectures and (2) developers’ positions within collaborative networks. Two indicators of project success are used: product quality and project velocity. Two dimensions of design architecture – degree of decomposition and coupling –and one characteristic of developer network structures – degree centrality– are investigated for their impact on project performance. Using data gathered from SourceForge.net and its monthly dumps, we empirically test hypotheses on the top 100 projects according to project rankings. These rankings are generated from the traffic, communication, and development statistics collected for each project hosted on SourceForge.net. Besides the top 100 projects, we also randomly choose another 100 projects to form the data sample. The main findings are that (1) the degree of decomposition has an inverted U-shaped relationship with project performance, (2) when tested on the sample of top 100 projects, average degree centrality of a project team has a positive and significant effect on project performance and (3) the effects of network metrics on some of project performances are positive in the top 100 projects and some of them are negative in the random 100 projects. We employ some control variables such as developer work experiences and sponsorship, to provide insight into the direction of the effect of degree centrality on project success. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and several future research directions are outlined. Collapse
