Abstract: Start-ups have revolutionised many economic ecosystems, becoming innovation pioneers around the world. Most are based on data-driven business models, particularly relying on machine learning technologies. However, not all start-ups that use machine learning technologies manage to create and capture value. The existing literature on the use value enabled by information technologies does not take into account the unique capabilities of machine learning. The theory of data network effects offers a promising explanation of how to create value using machine learning. However, it does not explicitly describe how to capture value using machine learning. In contrast, business model theory explains how companies use technologies to create and capture value, but not specifically through the use of machine learning technology. Therefore, this study aims to improve the theo­ retical understanding of the key drivers of value creation and capture in start-ups with business models driven by this kind of technology. Statistical techniques are used in a sample of 122 start-ups to explore the theoretical relationships between these two theories. The analysis reveals the link between specific value creation and capture factors of the two theories, such as efficiency, novelty, and performance expectancy. The study also provides evidence of the need to adopt a co-evolutionary perspective of value creation and capture through the use of machine learning. Collapse

Abstract: Physician Review Websites (PRWs) help users select physicians by providing both structured and unstructured data on physicians and patients' experiences with physicians. In this paper, the adequacy of the available in­ formation on PRWs is investigated. An empirical study is conducted to understand the information that patients seek from PRWs through a survey instrument administered to 344 patients. A topic modelling approach is then employed on 666,551 text reviews of patients using data from a popular PRW in India to discover information available on the PRWs. Combining both approaches, it is found that 12 out of 25 topics are either unavailable or only partially available, indicating an information gap. Two topics which constitute the information gap are then utilised to conduct a full factorial experiment on 153 respondents using a Latin Square design. Experimental results demonstrate that adding relevant information improves the physician selection process. Our work con­ tributes to the healthcare IS literature on online physician selection and the role of information availability. The results will help PRWs and hospitals decide how to restructure information on their websites and devise stra­ tegies to nudge patients to write reviews highlighting the desired information. Abstract: The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is popular in social commerce research, but existing studies have yielded inconclusive and inconsistent findings. As TPB was developed before the introduction of the Internet, Web 2.0 technologies, and social media, it is time to evaluate whether its relevance, effectiveness, novelty, and parsimony may have deteriorated due to temporal factors and the emergence of new Information Systems (IS) artifacts. In this work, an extended TPB2 is proposed by integrating social support, and MASEM analysis was conducted using a pooled correlation matrix. The findings revealed that TPB2 can better capture the nature of social commerce, as it can explain 28.4% of the variance in attitude, 59.0% of the variance in behavioral intention, and 9% of the variance in use behavior. In addition, it indicates that masculinity and uncertainty avoidance are the most significant Hofstedian cultural dimensions. The theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed along with the research agenda. Collapse

Abstract: Recent information and cybersecurity research have focused on improving individuals’ security compliance behavior. However, improved security performance remains a challenge since individuals often fail to comply with security best practices. In this study, we investigate a new individual cybersecurity compliance behavior model proposed by Donalds and Osei-Bryson (2017). Specifically, we investigate the influence of individual decision styles on their cybersecurity compliance behavior and other antecedents of such behavior. To empirically validate the hypotheses in the Donalds & Osei-Bryson model, we used data collected from 248 individuals and then use multiple regression to examine the assertions of the model. Our findings confirm that individual’s decision styles, specifically, dominant orientation and dominant decision style, influence their individual cybersecurity compliance behavior and other antecedents of such behavior. Our research offers new dimensions for investigating individual cybersecurity compliance behavior and new insights into factors that may influence individual’s cybersecurity compliance behavior. Abstract: Open source software (OSS) communities have been witnessing growing commercial interests with increased corporate involvement in the recent years with acquisitions of major OSS platforms such as Red Hat and GitHub. Researchers have studied a wide variety of motivations behind individuals' participation in OSS communities. In this study, we build upon the framework, rooted in self-deterministic and social practice theories, proposed by von Krogh et al. (2012) and develop a model of OSS contribution likelihood. We empirically validate the model with a large dataset from 2017 GitHub Open Source Survey that includes over 5,500 randomly selected OSS developers. Results indicate that short-term and/or tangible motivations (carrots) and long-term, value-based factors (rainbows) influence OSS developers' contribution likelihood. However, carrots are relatively more important. Further, we find that as internal self-efficacy increases, effect of OSS hiring behind contribution to OSS decreases. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of factors influencing the acceptance by Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients of a self-management application for an Internet of Things system. Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) factors including performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence were tested along with sociodemographic (age and gender) and technology-associated (experience with modern technology) factors to determine their contributions for predicting behavioral intention to use the application. Fifty respondents completed the survey. The results show that the UTAUT-based factors, sociodemographic and technologyassociated factors account for 82.9% of the variability in PD patients’ behavioral intention to use the application. We found that women were significantly more positive than men (p<0.001) in their intention to use the application. If offered the application in the future, 70% of the respondents would use it. Respondents with lower level of experience with technology had less intention to use the application. Performance expectancy and social influence were the only factors that positively predicted intention to use the application. The results showed high scores related to intention to use the application, suggesting high acceptance of the application by the PD patients. Based on qualitative results, the application was seen by PD patients as a useful tool for providing them a better overview of their health status. Finally, the acceptance of the application can be increased by showing its benefits to the PD patients and by developing social strategies to encourage them to stimulate each other to use the application. Abstract: Besides matchmaking, the major success factor of service sharing platforms is to build trust in service providers. Therefore, service sharing platforms typically provide a rating system where service consumers can rate service providers, which signals the trustworthiness of service providers. Based on signaling theory, we examine if external trust signals, namely a star rating from another online platform and mutual friends between service providers and service consumers on social networks, can serve as alternative signals to build trust in service providers who have no rating at the service sharing platform yet. Using a laboratory experiment, we find that a star rating from another online platform positively influences trust in service providers, while mutual friends on social networks and the combination of both external trust signals have no significant influence. Furthermore, we find evidence that the combination slightly decreases trust in service providers compared to the sole presence of a star rating from another online platform. In addition, trust in service providers positively influences willingness to pay of service consumers. Consequently, service sharing platforms have to be aware that not every external trust signal increases trust in service providers and ultimately leads to a higher willingness to pay of service consumers.
