Abstract: As businesses increasingly use gamified mobile marketing campaign (GMMC) systems to engage mobile shop­ pers, gamification in m-commerce systems warrants more attention in both IS research and design practices. Inspired by peak-end theory, this study focused on the puzzling differences between user experience vs. memory and empirically examined the impact of different experience orders of cognitive load on user perceptions and behavioral intentions. Overall, the outcomes of this research suggest that appropriate applications of the peakend effect, moderated via users’ regulatory focus styles, can alleviate the negative mental utility imagery of users, reducing their perceived uncertainties and opt-out intentions from the GMMC. Important implications for research and practice are then discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Prior information system research remains inconsistent of the effects of system certifications. In their current use, certifications are often reduced to graphical seals. This approach fails to incorporate detailed assurance information emanating from the certification process. To address this gap, we adopt a design science approach and deploy a four-phase research design to clarify how to design impactful IS certification presentations. First, we identify sources of users' limited understanding of seals and formulate a design proposal for a certification presentation by drawing upon the elaboration likelihood model. In the second phase, we formulate and validate a set of design meta-requirements and guidelines to improve certification presentation, using cognitive load theory and Toulmin's model of argumentation as kernel theories. In the third phase, new certification presentations that comply with the proposed guidelines are developed and evaluated for their effectiveness. We show that presentations that augment seal-based certification presentations with richer assurance information improve certification effectiveness. This increases users' assurance and trust perceptions when the presentations align with the users' cognitive information processing needs in ways that reduce their cognitive load and enhance argument quality of assurance information. Abstract: Diversity in information system project (ISP) teams can be a double-edged sword. Since many ISP teams bring together different specialists who have different backgrounds, knowledge, and skills, managing their diverse nature represents an important concern in the IS field. However, so far, few studies have examined the influence that project teams' diversity has on IS project outcomes. To better understand this influence, we developed a multilevel research model that examined job tenure and organizational tenure diversity in ISP teams and their influence on team members' satisfaction. We tested our hypotheses via hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) with data that we collected from 200 participants in 41 ISP teams. Our results indicate that job tenure influences the effect that job tenure diversity has on a team member's satisfaction: while team "rookies" were more satisfied in teams that had greater job tenure diversity, team "veterans" were more satisfied when their teams had lower job tenure diversity. Via systematically applying both conceptual and methodological recommendations in combination, we address several limitations in past research and underscore the need to adopt a more nuanced and rigorous approach to examine diversity in project teams. Abstract: Inadequate patient safety is a serious issue in current medical practice. Medical errors cause adverse events (AEs) for patients and lead to premature deaths, unintended complications, prolonged hospital stays, and higher medical costs. Although the importance of AE prediction and prevention is well recognized in the information systems literature, there is a dearth of research on modeling and predicting AEs caused by medical errors. Following the design science research paradigm, this study describes the search, design, and evaluation of a novel in-hospital AE prediction model, called Stochastic Autoregressions for Latent Trajectories (SALT). The proposed model uniquely integrates generalized linear mixed model with multitask learning and stochastic time-series processes. Results from our empirical evaluation show that SALT outperforms prior state-of-the-art techniques in predicting AEs during patients' hospital stays. Through a simulation, we further demonstrate significant cost savings potential when hospitals implement and integrate SALT in their inpatient care. This study contributes to the design science literature by formalizing the in-hospital AE prediction problem, on the one hand, and developing a novel graphical model to address the prediction problem, on the other. For healthcare practitioners and administrators, our predictive analytics approach unveils important insights to minimize AEs. Collapse

Abstract: We study the impacts of “humanizing” artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled autonomous customer service agents (chatbots). Implementing a field experiment in collaboration with a dual channel clothing retailer based in the United States, we automate a used clothing buy-back process, such that individuals engage with the retailer’s autonomous chatbot to describe the used clothes they wish to sell, obtain a cash offer, and (if they accept the offer) print a shipping label to finalize the transaction. We causally estimate the impact of chatbot anthropomorphism on transaction conversion by randomly exposing consumers to exogenously varied levels of chatbot anthropomorphism, operationalized by incorporating a random draw from a set of three anthropomorphic features: humor, communication delays, and social presence. We provide evidence that, in this retail setting, anthropomorphism is beneficial for transaction outcomes, but that it also leads to significant increases in offer sensitivity. We argue that the latter effect occurs because, as a chatbot becomes more human-like, consumers shift to a fairness evaluation or negotiating mindset. We also provide descriptive evidence suggesting that the benefits of anthropomorphism for transaction conversion may derive, at least in part, from consumers’ increased willingness to disclose personal information necessary to complete the transaction. Abstract: While design science research has established its position as a prominent field of research in the IS community, there is a lack of transparency regarding the impact of recent information systems design science research (IS DSR) papers. This lack of insight arguably poses challenges to an informed discourse and limits our ability to communicate the progress that IS DSR has achieved. Therefore, after mapping impactful IS DSR papers, we develop a scientometric study to address the lack of insights into factors that affect the scientific impact of IS DSR papers in top IS journals. In this study, we focus on active, IS-specific DSR areas and consider papers published in the AIS Senior Scholars' basket of journals between 2004 and 2014. Specifically, we develop a model that explores factors that affect IS DSR papers' scientific impact. Our findings show that theorization and novelty significantly explain scientific impact. We discuss our work's implications and derive recommendations intended to shape future knowledge creation in IS DSR. Collapse

Abstract: Crowd work reflects a new form of gainful employment on the Internet. We study how the nature of the tasks being performed and financial compensation jointly shape work perceptions of crowd workers in order to better understand the changing modes and patterns of digital work. Surveying individuals on 23 German crowd working platforms, this work is the first to add a multi-platform perspective on perceived working conditions in crowd work. We show that crowd workers need rather high levels of financial compensation before task characteristics become relevant for shaping favorable perceptions of working conditions. We explain these results by considering financial compensation as an informational cue indicating the appreciation of working effort that is internalized by well-paid crowd workers. Resulting boundary conditions for task design are discussed. These results help us understand when and under what conditions crowd work can be regarded as a fulfilling type of employment in highly developed countries. Collapse

Abstract: The relationship between regionally tied institutional logics and the location of organizations is an important issue in organization theory. Recent work highlights how supportive regional logics can give rise to products or organizations that resonate with these logics and how the geographic patterns that underlie industries may be understood by examining such relationships. This literature has not, however, offered deep attention to the ways in which features of technology—specifically, its inherent uncertainty—may interact with such dynamics. In this paper, we tackle the challenge. Our work examines how the level of support for an environmental-conservation logic within a region is associated with the number of wind and solar equipment manufacturers in that region in the years 1978–2006. By simultaneously exploring the effects of this logic on two similar technologies, our work not only reinforces how logics may interact with organizational activity but also shows how the magnitude and mechanisms of this effect depend on the technology in question. We build on these findings to discuss the importance of examining technologies in detail, including their dimensions of uncertainty, the role of timing in examining the effect of regionally tied logics, and the links between public policy and logics. Abstract: Offshoring—the transfer of work activities to providers in offshore countries—has for some time affected the nature of work in onshore locations. Not much is however known about the reactions of onshore job incumbents to such changes. In this article, we use a survey of UK firms to examine the relationship between perceived changes in onshore managers’ work characteristics induced by information systems offshoring and managers’ affective organizational commitment. We found that a perceived increase in onshore managers’ job complexity was associated with higher affective organizational commitment only if managers also perceived organizational valence, that is, only if they believed that information systems offshoring benefited their organization. A perceived increase in cross-cultural work was associated with higher affective organizational commitment, and this association was positively moderated by managers’ perceptions of organizational valence. Using the offshoring context, our findings provide insights into consequences of contemporary changes in the nature of work in developed countries and to explain the diverse reactions of onshore job incumbents to such changes. Abstract: This study investigates how the information that individuals accumulate through helping others in a customer support crowdsourcing community influences their ability to generate novel, popular, and feasible ideas in an innovation crowdsourcing community. A customer support crowdsourcing community is one in which customers help each other develop solutions to their current problems with a company’s products. An innovation crowdsourcing community is one in which customers propose new product ideas directly to a company. Because a customer support community provides information regarding customers’ current needs and provides opportunities to help individuals activate relevant means information, we expect that an individuals’ experience of helping in a customer support community enhances the individuals’ new product ideation performance. By utilizing a natural language processing technique, we construct each individual’s information network based on his or her helping activities in a customer support community. Building on analogical reasoning theory, we hypothesize that the patterns of individuals’ information networks, in terms of breadth and depth, influence their various new product ideation outcomes in an innovation crowdsourcing community. Our analysis reveals that generalists who have offered help on broad topic domains in the customer support community are more likely to create novel ideas than are nongeneralists. Further, we find that generalists who have accumulated deep knowledge in at least one topic domain (deep generalists) outperform nongeneralists in their ability to generate popular and feasible ideas, whereas generalists who have accumulated only shallow knowledge across diverse domain areas (shallow generalists) do not. The results suggest that the ability of generalists to outperform nongeneralists in creating popular and feasible ideas is contingent on whether they have also accumulated deep knowledge. Collapse
