‘What a waste of time’: An examination of cybersecurity legitimacy

Abstract: Managers who oversee cybersecurity policies commonly rely on managerial encouragement (e.g., rewards) and employee characteristics (e.g., attitude) to drive compliant behaviour. However, whereas some cybersecurity initiatives are perceived as reasonable by employees, others are viewed as a ‘waste of time’. This research introduces employee judgements of cybersecurity legitimacy as a new angle for understanding employee compliance with cybersecurity policies over time. Drawing on theory from the organisational legitimacy and cybersecurity literature, we conduct a three-wave survey of 529 employees and find that, for each separate wave, negative legitimacy judgements mediate the relationship between management support and compliance, as well as between cybersecurity inconvenience and compliance. Our results provide support for cybersecurity legitimacy as an important influence on employee compliance with cybersecurity initiatives. This is significant because it highlights to managers the importance of not simply expecting compliant employee behaviour to follow from the introduction of cybersecurity initiatives, but that employees need to be convinced that the initiatives are fair and reasonable. Interestingly, we did not find sufficient support for our expectation that the increased likelihood of a cybersecurity incident will moderate the legitimacy-policy compliance relationship. This result suggests that the legitimacy perceptions of employees are unyielding to differences in the risk characteristics of the cybersecurity incidents facing organisations. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a crucial facet of contemporary technological innovation, influencing diverse domains. Consequently, understanding the diffusion and evolution of AI innovations is vital. Scholarly publications have commonly served as proxies for studying these AI innovations. However, previous studies on publication diffusion have largely overlooked the role of models, which is particularly integral for AI innovations as they bridge upstream datasets and downstream applications. Moreover, models form an interdependent network due to their combinational evolution. This paper addresses this gap, examining how the location, movement, and speed of model movement in that model network affect the dissemination of AI research. Using a four-layer network-author collaborations, paper citations, model dependencies, and keyword co-occurrences-we examine 345,383 AI papers from 2000345,383 AI papers from to 2022 This research aims to contribute to the diffusion of innovation literature and dynamic network analysis, offering several novel insights and advancements. Abstract: The purpose of this research is to investigate patient motivation for adopting telemedicine services. A theoretical research model is utilized based on the Extended Valence Framework (EVF), which includes perceived trust, perceived risk, perceived benefit, and the intent to use telemedicine services. Additionally, three antecedents of trust and risk are included --perceived privacy, perceived security, and familiarity. Partial least squares (PLS) is used to test the research model. The results indicate a clear pathway to intent through perceived trust and perceived benefit. In addition, the antecedents perceived security and familiarity have significant relationships with perceived trust, but not with perceived risk. Perceived privacy has no significance. Overall, this research suggests that to increase telemedicine services usage, we should focus on security, familiarity, trust, and benefit. Collapse

Abstract: Machine learning (ML) analyses offer great potential to craft profound advice for augmenting managerial decision-making. Yet, even the most promising ML advice cannot improve decisionmaking if it is not utilized by decision makers. We therefore investigate how ML analyses influ­ ence decision makers’ utilization of advice and resulting decision-making performance. By analyzing data from 239 ML-supported decisions in real-world organizational scenarios, we demonstrate that decision makers’ utilization of ML advice depends on the information quality and transparency of ML advice as well as decision makers’ trust in data scientists’ competence. Furthermore, we find that decision makers’ utilization of ML advice can lead to improved decision-making performance, which is, however, moderated by the decision makers’ manage­ ment level. The study’s results can help organizations leverage ML advice to improve decisionmaking and promote the mutual consideration of technical and social aspects behind ML advice in research and practice as a basic requirement. Abstract: Scholars have extolled e-commerce as a pathway for sustaining firm operations in the unique circumstances of COVID-19. To add crisis time evidence to the body of work, and based on World Bank Enterprise Survey data, this inquiry interrogates 249 small manufacturing firms in Italy by examining the effect of e-commerce on (1) resilience, (2) direct exports and (3) indirect exports. The results show that while e-commerce has a positive impact on direct exports, a negative influence is recorded on indirect exports. Besides, e-commerce significantly increases resilience which, in turn, accelerates direct exports. However, resilience is found to have a trivial influence on indirect exporting. Furthermore, held as a constant, firm size demonstrates a significant and positive effect on direct and indirect exports. These fresh findings prompt implications for understanding the correlates of e-commerce, resilience and export behaviour. Practically, there are salient insights for stakeholders engaged in reviving small manufacturers’ exports for a speedy post COVID-19 recovery in Italy. Collapse

Abstract: Voice commerce allows customers to carry out sales dialogues with voice assistants (VAs) through natural spoken language. However, its adoption remains limited. To help determine how to overcome existing barriers to adoption, we conducted a series of three empirical pre-studies and a laboratory experiment (N = 323) investigating the role of VAs' humanness in interactions with customers; research has reached no consensus on this matter. Our results reveal that humanizing VAs increases customers' perceptions of social presence and parasocial interaction, thereby enhancing perceived relationship quality and ultimately leading to increased intentions to shop using the VA. Although, we also find a negative direct effect of humanization on parasocial interaction, it is offset by the larger positive indirect effect via social presence. This may provide one explanation for the inconsistencies in the literature. For practitioners, our findings highlight the importance of careful design in humanizing VAs to increase voice commerce adoption. Collapse

Abstract: Recently Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled conversational agents or chatbots (ICA hereafter) have been widely introduced in online customer service, and are expected to transform the frontline workforce. However, most studies from employees' perspectives have been qualitative in nature. Moreover, extant empirical studies perceive ICA as a tool rather than considering ICA as an AI-enabled digital workforce. Besides, rare papers moved further to explore the rooted psychological drivers (such as identity) underlying the employees' actions. To address these gaps, our paper integrates the identity theory and cooperation perspectives to examine the impact of ICA's human-like capability on employees' job identity through the enhancement in work experience. Our study is expected to provide an innovative perspective viewing ICA as a human-like agent rather than a tool in behavior studies. This study also enriches the identity theory and cooperation-competition theory and promotes their applications in IS literature. Collapse
