Abstract: Inspired by the literature on processing fluency and the practical question of how to choose fonts for website design, we investigated the impact of customer reviews on consumer evaluation under an easy-to-read (vs. difficult-to-read) review font. We found that the feeling of ease in reading led consumers to judge the reviewers as more credible, thus increasing the impact of the reviews. Moreover, the effect of font diminished when consumers elaborated information more thoroughly (i.e., when high in need for cognition, or in an accountable situation) and thus did not use simple heuristics (reading ease) to make judgment. Abstract: This paper reports from an empirical study that focuses on cloud computing (CC) adoption in various contexts. The findings build upon 25 interviews conducted in both Norwegian and Egyptian organizations. We utilized a neo-institutional lens as a guide to understand the internal and external factors, and their various influences on shaping CC adoption strategies. We identified five external institutional factors; governments and regulatory bodies, cloud service providers, media, socio-political changes, and culture. Furthermore, three internal institutional factors have been identified; internal stakeholders, organization characteristics, and IT infrastructure. We identified three different adoption strategies in this respect; efficiency-motivated adoption, legitimacy-motivated adoption and nonadoption. This research gives an insight into which institutional factors that influence the adoption and non-adoption of CC services. Collapse

Abstract: Demographic change and continuously increasing spending on public health have intensified the public debate as well as deliberations on the development and deployment of new assistive technologies for health, independent living, and well-being for senior citizens. Other than large-scale, policy-driven health initiatives that envision ambitious and risky “grand designs”, in this paper we illustrate the case of a grassrootslike project which used Action Design Research (ADR) as guiding research paradigm to produce a low-cost, yet effective, monitoring system for people with mild cognitive impairments or dementia. Besides a description of meta-requirements and solution components, we also identify general implications for future research. In particular, we explain how an ADR-inspired approach to social innovation could be a useful alternative to large-scale, policy-driven health initiatives to increase the time-to-market of new solutions, pre-test new use cases, and to enhance accessibility and affordability of assistive technologies for the local community. Abstract: Indoor air quality has a significant effect on human performance. In addition, many health issues can be traced back to bad indoor room-climate. However, especially in Europe, pupils spend a majority of their learning life in school classes affected by poor room climate. Without an automatic heating, ventilation and air conditioning system these pupils and their teachers have to rely on manual ventilation by opening windows. Thereby, they often lack fundamental room climate quality information to effectively guide their behavior. Information systems (IS) and sensor technology can be a remedy to these challenges. Existing room climate monitoring systems regularly reveal major shortcomings, e.g. in respect to user interfaces, presentation of data, and systematic engagement. We want to address the aforementioned shortcomings and present an art IS, which reflects room conditions in real time through modifications of depicted art. The artifact is evaluated in a field experiment, conducted in an Austrian grammar school. The evaluation reveals that room climate measured in CO2 can indeed be improved significantly. In addition, pupils also perceive a significant room climate improvement. Collapse

Abstract: Indoor room-climate influences our everyday life on many levels. High room temperature decreases our productivity and our ability to concentrate. Moreover, many medical conditions can be traced back to bad indoor room-climate. In this paper we present an information system (IS) for room-climate monitoring. Our system is an informative art system being equipped with standard room climate sensors for temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide. In contrast to conventional monitoring systems a display embedded in a standard art frame presents the current room climate on the basis of classical art. Changing room conditions are reflected in the painting in real-time. By implementing the presented IS we pursue a research avenue which is dedicated to a more fundamental research questions: “Are hedonic, art-based IS superior to utilitarian, non-art-based IS in respect to usage and impact? Abstract: How do managers make their decisions with regard to adjustment and deployment of information technology (IT) over time? Motivated by this complex dynamics, we draw on behavioral theory of the firm and theorize a bounded rational process of managerial decision making for IT investment. In particular, we explain the dynamic adjustment of IT investment by bounded rational managers’ pursuing of satisfaction. When performance feedback of prior profitability is below their aspiration, they become unsatisfied and adjust IT investment to facilitate problemistic search directed toward innovative solutions to performance problems. As a result, performance problems will be solved and future profitability can be improved. We also deepen our understanding by theorizing the contingency of above dynamics based on the possibility of agency problems and the appropriateness of corporate governance mechanisms, which is largely omitted in behavioral theory. We further draw on agency theory and examine the moderating roles of different corporate governance mechanisms (i.e., incentive alignment versus monitoring) in the effects of IT investment on problemistic search and rent generation. By using a recent, large-scale panel data set, we find that managers are indeed bounded rational and dynamically adjust IT investment over time based on performance feedback. We also find that incentive alignment outgoes monitoring in directing managerial decision making toward innovating with and generating rent with IT investment. Abstract: Prior research concerning IT business value has established a link between firm-level IT investment and tangible returns such as output productivity. Research also suggests that IT is vital to intermediate processes such as those that produce intangible output. Among these, the use of IT in innovation and knowledge creation processes is perhaps the most critical to a firm's long-term success. However, little is known about the relationship between IT, knowledge creation, and innovation output. In this study, we contribute to the literature by comprehensively examining the contribution of IT to innovation production across multiple contexts using a quality-based measure of innovation output. Analyzing annual information from 1987 to 1997 for a panel of large U.S. manufacturing firms, we find that a 10% increase in IT input is associated with a 1.7% increase in innovation output for a given level of innovation-related spending. This relationship between IT, research and development (R&D), and innovation production is robust across multiple econometric methodologies and is found to be particularly strong in the mid to late 1990s, a period of rapid technological innovation. Our results also demonstrate the importance of IT in creating value at an intermediate stage of production, in this case, through improved innovation productivity. However, R&D and its related intangible factors (skill, knowledge, etc.) appear to play a more crucial role in the creation of breakthrough innovations. Collapse

Abstract: Since the introduction of information systems more than 60 years ago, organizations want to ensure that their systems are effective or "successful". Much has changed in the evaluation of information systems success during this period. The role of information systems in organizations has changed dramatically, as have the key stakeholders and the expected benefits of the investments in IS. During this period, IS research has evolved to keep pace with the changing expectations regarding the success of information systems, yet practice tends to lag behind. In this commentary, we discuss five eras of information systems evolution and explain how the perceptions and measures of successful information systems have changed across these eras. By looking at the past and present, we are able to comment on how our understanding of success has evolved over time in research and practice. We discuss the inadequacy of IS success evaluation in practice. Finally, we offer four themes as calls for future action related to the research of information systems success. Collapse

Abstract: Firms are increasingly sourcing internal information systems functions from external service providers. However, there is limited empirical evidence of the economic impact of this delivery option and, more specifically, of the productivity gains accruing to firms that have outsourced. Moreover, there is little evidence of the role and contributions of the individual mechanisms by which service providers create value for client firms. We are particularly interested in whether client firms benefit from the accumulated knowledge held by information technology (IT) service firms. In this paper, we examine the impact of IT outsourcing on the productivity of firms that choose this mode of services delivery focusing, on the role of IT-related knowledge. Since firms self-select into their optimal sourcing mode, we use a variety of econometric techniques including propensity scorebased matching and switching regression to control for potential bias arising from endogenously determined sourcing modes. We demonstrate that IT outsourcing does lead to productivity gains for firms that select this mode of service delivery. Our results also suggest that IT-related knowledge held by IT services vendors enables these productivity gains, the magnitude of which is moderated by a firm's IT intensity. Moreover, the value of outsourcing to a client firm increases with its propensity for outsourcing, which in turn depends on firm-specific attributes including efficiency level, financial leverage, and variability in business conditions. Our analyses also show that firms that outsource have been able to achieve additional productivity gains from contracting out compared with their counterfactuals. Collapse

From Old Competence Destruction to New Competence Access: Evidence from the Comparison of Two Discontinuities in Anticancer Drug Discovery

Abstract: Research in creative destruction has argued that competence-destroying discontinuities result in incumbents' underperformance in research and development (R&D) with respect to entrants, even if complementary assets aid incumbents in retaining market share. In this paper, I propose that attention to the extent of competence destruction is necessary but not sufficient. An analysis of differences in R&D performance through a discontinuity requires assessment not only of old competence destruction but also of new competence access; that is, it requires assessment of both old capability obsolescence and new capability acquisition. I find evidence for this proposition in data from the biotechnology disruption to the anticancer drug market. In particular, my research design is a within-market matched pair of discontinuities: from chemotherapy to small-molecule targeted drugs, and from chemotherapy to large-molecule targeted drugs. Although equally competence destroying, the two discontinuities differ in the access incumbents have to the new capabilities required: whereas all new capabilities are available in the former, one new capability is inaccessible to incumbents (and to many entrants) in the latter. The contrasting results of these two discontinuities support my proposition: in the competence-destroying discontinuity with full access to new capabilities, incumbents did not fall behind entrants; in the other discontinuity, incumbents fell behind only those entrants that owned the difficult-to-access new capability. I close with implications for research in creative destruction, in rational adaptation to environmental change, and in strategic renewal. Collapse
