Abstract: The paper highlights the importance of data sustainability in the data infrastructures aimed at long-term knowledge discoveries. Data sustainability refers to data’s capacity to endure across technological and human generations, and it problematizes the data governance literature from a temporal perspective. Existing work has already moved the literature from the organizational setting to more complex interorganizational settings, highlighting discrepancies between normative data governance models and organizational practices. We broaden this literature temporally by examining and outlining research directions for data sustainability from different meta-theoretical perspectives – evolutionary, relational, and durational. Data sustainability across technological and human generations navigates complementary and competing temporal demands: Data need to transition across socio-technical regimes over time, yet be embedded in social and material networks to be meaningful; historical and present data also must remain available and accessible in near and distant futures, for going back in time and seeing new data linkages and combinations. We argue that data sustainability is critical in ensuring progression in social and environmental sustainability. The paper contributes both to data governance and sustainability literatures. Abstract: Real-time assessment of users' cognitive states has practical importance, allowing organizations to infer user behaviors. Realizing its importance, prior studies – specifically those using mouse cursor movements – have applied various theories to answer a similar question, i.e., how does a high cognitive load influence the users' device usage behavior? While numerous activities can increase cognitive load, we argue that the mechanisms behind how humans process information can more holistically be explained using Dual Process Theory (DPT) (i.e., when cognitive load is either low or high) and can be applied under a broad range of usage contexts. Using a within-participant experiment and a simple typing task, we demonstrate that DPT is robust to work by examining DPT and mouse cursor movements. Specifically, users' typing speed and task execution are significantly slower when engaged in the task (System 2) and significantly faster when completing the task with lower cognitive effort and engagement (System 1). Abstract: Digital innovation poses a threat for incumbent product-centric firms as digitalization blurs industry boundaries and lowers entry barriers to new entrants. However, digital innovation offers many opportunities for incumbents to sustain and successfully compete in the new digital space, if they can overcome the challenges associated with the development and adoption of digital innovation practices. This study empirically explores how incumbent product-centric firms based in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria master the challenge of digital innovation by looking for specific microfoundations through the lens of the dynamic capabilities framework. The grounded theory method is used to get a subjective view of practitioners. The study's contribution is two-fold. Firstly, it addresses criticism related to the practical application of the dynamic capabilities framework by providing a detailed view on specific underlying microfoundations. Secondly, it aims at expanding our understanding of how digital innovation evolves by providing key microfoundations deemed important by practice for the development of digital innovation among product-centric firms. Abstract: Smart service innovation is the process of reconfiguring resources, structures, and value co-creation processes in service systems that result in novel data-driven service offerings. The nature of such offerings requires the involvement of multiple actors, which has been investigated by a few studies only. In particular, little is known about the multiple actors’ efforts to manage uncertainty in the process of establishing smart service systems. Empirically grounded in data from 25 interviews with industry experts, we explore how organizations act and interact in smart service innovation processes. For our data analysis, we adopt a microfoundational view to derive a theoretical model that conceptualizes actor engagement as a microfoundation for iterative uncertainty reduction in the actor-to-actor network of the smart service system. Our study contributes to information systems research on service systems engineering and digital transformation by explaining smart service innovation from both a multi-actor and a multi-level perspective, drawing on service-dominant (S-D) logic and microfoundations as well-established theoretical lenses. Abstract: We examine post-adoptive IT use of fitness tracking technologies longitudinally using three data sets gathered before, during, and after the COVID-19 lockdowns in the United States. Using adaptive structuration theory (AST) as a meta-theory, we model post-adoptive IT use as having two fundamental types (continued and novel), each having distinct psychological and sociological antecedents. Sociological antecedents are further broken down into those coming from society and those coming from the technology. Findings indicate there are strong correlations between antecedents and the two types of use in all three data sets. Post-hoc analysis indicates continued and novel use vary across time. These variations are not static and appear to be non-linear. Implications and future research directions are also discussed. Collapse

Abstract: The aim of this editorial is to provide a worm's-eye view of the theorizing process, by which we mean a detailed explanation of the activities and phases involved in theory development based on literature. We develop and explain by example a model of theorizing for developing new theories. The model comprises theory genesis, four thought-gears-namely Informing Thoughts, Generating Thoughts, Materializing Thoughts, and Building Theory Elements from Thoughts-culminating in theory composition. While the theorizing model was developed based on our experience creating grand theory, we believe it can be applied to the development of other forms of theory. Collapse

Abstract: Online labor platforms (OLPs) can use algorithms along two dimensions: matching and control. While previous research has paid considerable attention to how OLPs optimize matching and accommodate market needs, OLPs can also employ algorithms to monitor and tightly control platform work. In this paper, we examine the nature of platform work on OLPs, and the role of algorithmic management in organizing how such work is conducted. Using a qualitative study of Uber drivers’ perceptions, supplemented by interviews with Uber executives and engineers, we present a grounded theory that captures the algorithmic management of work on OLPs. In the context of both algorithmic matching and algorithmic control, platform workers experience tensions relating to work execution, compensation, and belonging. We show that these tensions trigger market-like and organization-like response behaviors by platform workers. Our research contributes to the emerging literature on OLPs. Collapse

Abstract: Since its development in the field of ecological psychology, the concept 'affordances' has been prone to various adaptations. This is most evident in information systems (IS) research, where rapid developments and the generativity of today's digital technologies require a fast advancement of affordances theorization. Frequent but stepwise progress has been made to the concept over the past few years through IS researchers. While those advancements are necessary for understanding ITassociated organizational change, they carry the risk of theoretical fragmentation hindering knowledge accumulation. Applying a systematic five-staged literature review and reintegrating the results into existing conceptualizations of affordances, this paper strives toward a meta-view on affordances, constituted in a descriptive affordances framework and an affordances lifecycle model. The former provides researchers a tool for better identifying and understanding the meta-characteristics of affordances, while the latter offers a lens to interpret the circumstances of affordance emergence, actualization, and their outcomes. Abstract: Emancipation is a key concept in critical theories. Prior work suggests that emancipation is a complex and multi-faceted concept. Many conceptualizations of emancipation exist, and emancipation is defined in different ways. Existing empirical studies mainly focus on one or few components of emancipation. To have an integrated understanding of emancipation, we review the literature on emancipation in information systems (IS), with a view toward developing a typology of components of emancipation in the IS field. The typology of emancipation components consists of four components: freedom to act, freedom to express, freedom to belong and freedom to think.
