Input control and its signalling effects for complementors' intention to join digital platforms

Abstract: Existing information systems (IS) research on platform control has largely focused on examining how input control (i.e., the mechanisms used to control platform access) affects complementors' intentions and behaviours after their decision to join a digital platform. Yet, our understanding of how input control is perceived before this decision and how such perceptions influence prospective complementors' intention to join a platform is still nascent. In this regard, our study views input control as a salient signal that shapes prospective complementors' expected benefits and costs (i.e., their performance and effort expectancy), and ultimately their decision to join a digital platform. Drawing on signalling theory and the antecedent-benefit-cost (ABC) framework, we conducted a randomized online experiment in the context of donation-based crowdfunding. The experiment results offer empirical support for this view by showing that input control has distinct and complex signalling effects for prospective complementors. In particular, our findings reveal curvilinear and competing signalling effects, with perceived input control increasing both performance expectancy (at a decreasing rate) and effort expectancy (at an increasing rate). Also, we find that performance expectancy linearly increases prospective complementors' intention to join a platform, whereas effort expectancy linearly decreases their intention to do so. These findings imply that the overall relationship between perceived input control and intention to join follows an inverted U-shape curve, which means that neither a low nor a high, but a moderate degree of perceived input control maximizes prospective complementors' intention to join. In sum, the results of our study provide novel and important insights into the signalling role that perceived input control plays in shaping prospective complementors' decision to join a digital platform. Abstract: Recruitment is a critical activity for companies, and the research community has also shown significant interest in examining technology recruitment. Companies often communicate how they value their employees along with job requirements to potential candidates in a bid to attract them. However, there is an overall lack of understanding of how candidates react to such information and how their motivation toward the job changes with such online communication. Although there is substantial work that examines the decision-making process of managers who do technical hiring, to the best of our knowledge, there is a paucity of work that investigates the decision-making process of technical candidates. The broad research question studied is how including certain content in online communication about a technical job opportunity may (de)motivate heterogeneous candidates differently in applying for the job. We theorize the underlying process of how including certain content in online job communication may influence candidates’ propensity to apply and their minimum acceptable salary increase if they were to join the company. Additionally, we capture mediating variables that influence the effect of different online content on candidates’ propensity to apply and on candidates’ minimum acceptable salary increase. Abstract: This study identifies the different individual defensive responses that are triggered by ad personalization. We investigate how these responses impact user engagement behavior on social media. The study also examines the role of transparency in advertising and the perceived benefits of personalization on user engagement in Europe. To conduct our study, we are theoretically grounded in the defensive response model. A multi-step quantitative approach constituting two experiments and a survey is used. With 154 and 199 participants each, the experiments allowed us to define the theoretical model. The experiment identified paradoxical findings. We indent surveying online ads-users to examine the impact of personalization on individual defensive responses and the role transparency plays in predicting user engagement. Our research contributes to the theory by identifying defensive responses that explain the engagement behavior, and the impact of transparency on personalized advertising. Collapse

Abstract: Social networking sites and online communities are used by billions of people globally. It is important to understand the participation in these collaborative platforms and the roles different participants play. In this study, we examine the roles both local and global opinion leaders play and their influence on the community using content related to Covid mental health from Reddit. We employed social network analysis to identify opinion leaders based on their network position and connections, and we used sentiment analysis and econometric models to examine their impact on online health community participation. Our study reveals that global opinion leaders have more influence on thread participation than local opinion leaders. In addition, negative emotions expressed encourage more participants' involvement in online health community discussion. Collapse

Abstract: Although digital platforms have become mainstream, there still remain some unanswered questions pertaining to managing platform ecosystems. One such unexplored question pertains to the effect of marquee sellers on the platform—marquee sellers arguably attract other sellers and buyers to the platform, thereby enhancing the platform’s value. In this paper, we study how adding a marquee seller to a business-to-business (B2B) secondary-market platform for IT products affects other sellers, in terms of the prices they obtain for comparable products. Using proprietary data on B2B secondary-market auctions obtained from a platform provider, we show that the entry of a marquee seller has a positive effect on the prices obtained by other sellers on the platform, reflecting a reference-price effect. We further show that this positive effect on final prices is moderated by the extent to which bidders are active on multiple seller sites on the same platform and the extent to which bidders participate in the marquee seller site. We explain these effects using theory in multihoming and involvement, in terms of how reference prices are set. Our work extends the platforms literature by considering the specific influence of a marquee seller on other sellers, thereby informing platform owners on the implications of the advice to add more marquee sellers to platforms. Abstract: Environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations play an increasingly important role due to the growing focus on sustainability globally. Entities, such as banks and investors, utilize ESG ratings of companies issued by specialized rating agencies to evaluate ESG risks of companies. The process of assigning ESG ratings by human analysts is however laborious and time intensive. Developing methods to predict ESG ratings could alleviate such challenges, allow ESG ratings to be generated in a more timely manner, cover more companies, and be more accessible. Most works study the effects of ESG ratings on target variables such as stock prices or financial fundamentals of companies, but few works study how different types of company information can be utilized to predict ESG ratings. Previous works also largely focus on using only the financial information of individual companies to predict ESG ratings, leaving out the different types of inter-company relationship networks. Such inter-company relationship networks are typically dynamic, i.e., they evolve across time. In this paper, we focus on utilizing dynamic inter-company relationships for ESG ratings prediction, and examine the relative importance of different financial and dynamic network information in this prediction task. Our analysis shows that utilizing dynamic inter-company network information, based on common director, common investor and news event-based knowledge graph relationships, can significantly improve ESG rating prediction performance. Robustness checks over different time-periods and different number of time-steps in the future further validate these insights. Collapse

Abstract: Businesses that follow the trend of flexible work arrangements with home offices and hybrid work models are increasingly utilizing desk sharing to allocate available desks in the office efficiently. In this work, we investigate the utilization of flexible work arrangements, specifically the implementation of desk sharing in hybrid work models. To optimize the occupancy rate of shared desks and simultaneously meet demand and save costs, it is crucial to have real-time knowledge of their availability which can be obtained by recording occupancy over time. We utilize the Design Science Research (DSR) methodology to develop a prototype solution for real-time monitoring of shared desks occupancy in hybrid work models. The proposed prototype is a low-cost solution utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology consisting of a motion sensor and accelerometer that collect occupancy data and transmit it via Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN). Signal processing utilizing cloud computing is employed to enhance the quality and accuracy of the data, which is subsequently made available through a web dashboard. The prototype’s effectiveness is evaluated through a small-scale pilot deployment in a real-world environment over a two-week period, with reference values obtained during periods of non-use serving as a benchmark for the evaluation. Abstract: Informative online ratings enable digital platforms to reduce the search cost for buyers to find good sellers. However, rating inflation, a phenomenon in which average rating increases and rating variance across listings decreases, threatens the informativeness of ratings. We empirically identify the consequences of rating inflation by conducting a quasi-experiment with a digital platform that exogenously changed its rating display rule in a treated neighborhood, which resulted in rating inflation. Using a differences-in-differences approach, we find that platforms benefit from one aspect of rating inflation: user purchases and seller sales increase because of the increased average rating. However, they also face negative consequences: rating inflation causes a decrease in user trial and a greater concentration of sales among popular restaurants. Abstract: The role of artificial intelligence in daily life is constantly advancing and has become an important topic of discussion. With music and its lyrics being a vehicle to express topics of society, this paper investigates how artificial intelligence is perceived by musicians and reflected in their songs. By analyzing the lyrics of over 1,200 songs over three decades, this work applies sentiment analysis to extract polarities and emotions. The results provide insights into how musicians view and reflect the impact of artificial intelligence on society and how this is reflected in their song texts. The findings show an increase in songs mentioning artificial intelligence-related terms, with a trend of more songs implying negativity, such as anger. However, minor increases in positive emotions indicate musicians' ambivalent views on hopes and fear of artificial intelligence. Collapse

Abstract: While the positive aspects of the flow state have been widely researched, the effects of being aware of this state and the negative consequences still need to be explored. The loss of awareness that flow state may bring can lead to the purchase of products that consumers afterward regret and want to return them. This research aims to understand flow consciousness’s effect on consumer post-purchase regret from a dual perspective (process and outcome regret). The relevance of these relationships is also examined by analyzing the differences between 2 groups: maximizers and satisficers consumers. Through a structural equation model based on covariances tested with EQS 6.4, the results show that flow consciousness generates process regret but not outcome regret. How­ ever, the differences found between the two groups are worth noting. The research sheds light on the effect of flow consciousness on regret and provides insight into the mechanism of product return through post-purchase regret. The theoretical and managerial implications for e-commerce retailers are discussed. Collapse
