Abstract: As dynamic, non-routine disaster events appear and disappear in a short period, quickly and widely disseminating emergency warnings and alerts to the public is a critical communication goal for emergency management officers and citizen journalists. Twitter has become a prominent communication medium to achieve such a communication goal, attracting academic scholars, government agencies, and industry practitioners. However, most academic research and government reports have relied on either the retweet count or retweet time to understand factors affecting the propagation of disaster information. We argue that neither measure is sufficient to reflect the extent to which disaster tweets are quickly and widely propagated. Hence, we propose a new measure called the Propagation Index (PI) to better evaluate quick and wide propagation of disaster information. Using two Twitter datasets, we empirically examine the proposed measure in association with the Twitter features and compare its statistical results with those of the retweet count and retweet time. Our findings suggest that the PI more accurately captures how quickly and widely disaster tweets are propagated than the other measures. Therefore, this study contributes to academia, governments, and industry to improve their understanding of the propagation of disaster information on Twitter. Collapse

Abstract: A theory of information compression (TIC) conceptualizes how anticipated judgment costs can affect decision quality. We theorize—inductively from decision making in medicine, energy pricing, auditing, and financial analytics—how judgment networks can exacerbate financial and nonfinancial judgment costs that compress information. Information compression occurs when a process intended to inform decision making generates information that has little variation. This can reduce decision quality and market efficiency. We offer potential remedies to mitigate its adverse societal consequences. We use complementary theoretical perspectives to nomologically contextualize how information compression arises. We introduce an information compression measure based on information entropy. TIC’s theoretical crux is that the expansion of a judgment network’s publicness exacerbates information compression by increasing judgment costs for some entities in a judgment network. We close with future research ideas on TIC’s core propositions and its broader theoretical implications for information systems research. Abstract: Online reviews are integral to consumer decision-making while purchasing products on an e-commerce platform. Extant literature has conclusively established the effects of various review and reviewer related predictors to wards perceived helpfulness. However, background research is limited in addressing the following problem: how can readers interpret the topical summary of many helpful reviews that explain multiple themes and consecutively focus in-depth? To fill this gap, we drew upon Shannon’s Entropy Theory and Dual Process Theory to propose a set of predictors using NLP and text mining to examine helpfulness. We created four predictors - review depth, review divergence, semantic entropy and keyword relevance to build our primary empirical models. We also reported interesting findings from the interaction effects of the reviewer’s credibility, age of review, and review divergence. We also validated the robustness of our results across different product categories and higher thresholds of help fulness votes. Our study contributes to the electronic commerce literature with relevant managerial and theo retical implications through these findings. Collapse

Abstract: Elegant Design is a key determinant of positive consumer experience and a differentiating factor on the marketplace. However, research on product aesthetics suffers from the lack of metrics to assess elegance and insufficient understanding of what stimuli configurations are associated with it. In this paper we assess elegance as Effective Complexity, a metric capturing the complexity of an interface in terms of the regularities perceived by users. We offer empirical evidence that Effective Complexity is strongly correlated with perceived elegance and actual effort in the use of a new product and to Berlyne's curve of hedonic pleasure determined by the combination of novel and familiar stimuli. Abstract: Spaghetti-like" process models discovered through process mining are challenging to comprehend, especially, for inexperienced users. But, at the same time, they contain potential insights for decisionmakers. Designing process discovery techniques that work well in both aspects -being comprehensible and providing valuable information, for various data sets -is a challenging task in process mining. Therefore, we adopt metrics from various disciplines such as information theory, business process modelling, process mining, graph aesthetics, and cognitive load theory to define design principles for process discovery techniques in regards to model characteristics and visual layout principles. Each of the design principles includes a metric and reference value to ensure their testability and to provide quantitative orientation to designers. To assure that model comprehensibility does not come at the cost of losing essential information, we introduce an entropy-based measure as a boundary condition that expresses the amount of information a model encodes. Abstract: Little research in information system has been carried out on the subject of user’s choice of different components when composing a tweet through the analytical lens of information theory. This study employs a comparative case study approach to examine the use of hashtags of medicalterminology versus lay-language in tweet-trails and (1) introduces a novel H(x) index to reveal the complexity in the statistical structure and the variety in the composition of a tweet-trail, (2) applies radar graph and scatter plot as intuitive data visualization aids, and (3) proposes a methodological framework for structural analysis of Twitter data stream as a supplemental tool for profile analysis of Twitter users and content analysis of tweets. This systematic framework is capable of unveiling patterns in the structure of tweet-trails and providing quick and preliminary snap shots (selfies) of Twitter data stream because it’s an automatic and objective approach which requires no human intervention. Abstract: Retaining customers is a relevant topic throughout all service industries. However, only limited attention has been directed towards studying the antecedents of subscription renewal in the context of operational cloud enterprise systems. Cloud services have historically been offered as subscription-based services with the (theoretical) possibility of seamless service cancellation, in contrast to classical IT-Outsourcing contracts or license-based software installations of on-premise enterprise systems. In this work, we investigate the central concept of subscription renewal by focusing on different facets of IS success and their relevance for distinct employee cohorts. Analyzing inter-cohort differences has strong practical implications, as it helps IT vendors to focus on specific IT-related factors when trying to retain customers. Therefore an empirical study was undertaken. The hypotheses were developed on an individual level and tested using survey responses of IT decision makers within companies that adopted cloud enterprise systems. Gathered data was then analyzed using PLS. The results show that subscription renewal intention of the strategic cohort is mainly based on perceived system quality, whereas information quality explains most of the variance of subscription renewal in the management cohort. Beneath the cloud enterprise systems specific contributions, the work adds to the theoretical body of research related to IS success and IS continuation, as well as stakeholder perspectives. Abstract: Although the management of information assets--specifically, of text documents that make up 80 percent of these assets--an provide organizations with a competitive advantage, the ability of information retrieval (IR) systems to deliver relevant information to users is severely hampered by the difficulty of disambiguating natural language. The word ambiguity problem is addressed with moderate success in restricted settings, but continues to be the main challenge for general settings, characterized by large, heterogeneous document collections. In this paper, we provide preliminary evidence for the usefulness of statistical natural language processing (NLP) techniques, and specifically of collocation indexing, for IR in general settings. We investigate the effect of three key parameters on collocation indexing performance: directionality, distance, and weighting. We build on previous work in IR to (1) advance our knowledge of key design elements for collocation indexing, (2) demonstrate gains in retrieval precision from the use of statistical NLP for general-settings IR, and, finally, (3) provide practitioners with a useful cost-benefit analysis of the methods under investigation.
