Abstract: This article contributes to the discussion on the governance dynamics of platform ecosystems. We take a broad perspective to understand how the environment beyond the platform ecosystem (i.e., external conditions) shapes the actions of the platform and its various actors in reinforcing platform boundaries. Prior work explored how external influences, such as societal norms and national and local regulations, influence platform ecosystems, including external competitive pressures. But studies on the broader set of potential influences from external conditions are lacking; in particular, a study of such conditions and their influence across platforms in light of boundary reinforcement is called for. Boundary reinforcement is critical for the identity and legitimacy of a platform and for longer-term platform sustenance. Using a fuzzy-set qualitative configurational analysis (fsQCA) method with input coded from 271 peer-reviewed research articles covering 29 platforms, we offer a model detailing how external conditions influence a platform's boundary reinforcement actions. Abstract: Data-driven predictions have become an inseparable part of business decisions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has started helping the product and support teams perform more accurate experiments in various business settings. This study proposes a framework for businesses based on inductive learnings related to success and barriers shared on social media platforms. Our goal is to analyse the signals emerging from these conversational opinions from the early adoption of AI, with a focus towards facilitators and barriers faced by teams. Factors like efficiency, innovation, business research, product novelty, manual intervention, adaptability, emotion, support, personal growth, experiential learning, fear of failure and fear of upgradation have been identified based on an exploratory study and then a confirmatory study. We present the learnings through a roadmap for practitioners. This study contributes to the IS literature by delineating AI as a determinant of success and introduces a lot of organizational factors into the model. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations increasingly integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their selection procedures, for example, to analyze selection interviews. However, prior research indicates that applicants react negatively to an AI as decision agent in selection interviews. Only few studies have addressed possible mechanisms to mitigate negative effects of AI usage on applicant reactions, calling for increased research attention. The present experimental study (N=180) is among the first to test whether AI certification has the potential to positively influence people's fairness perceptions of AI usage. Consistent with previous research, our results show that people are less attracted to an organization that conducts AI-based (compared to human-based) selection interviews, partially due to lower procedural fairness perceptions. With regards to AI certification, we highlight the crucial role of the certification label's perceived trustworthiness in shaping applicants' procedural fairness perceptions and organizational attraction. Future research should investigate factors that enhance the trustworthiness of an AI certification label. Collapse

Abstract: Livestream e-commerce has been developing at a tremendous pace in recent years. On livestream platforms, such as Douyin, a retailer attracts viewers into the live room through short video advertising, and then streamers promote and sell products in real time. In such a scenario, an accurate prediction of traffic and sales plays an essential role in operation management, including live content strategy and inventory control. However, complex behaviors (follow, share, comment, etc.) of users and long conversion paths (from seeing the advertisement to entering the live room, and to purchasing the goods) lead to poor performance of traditional prediction methods. Additionally, few studies focus on advertising information in evaluating live room performance. Therefore, we propose a two-stage learning model for traffic and sales prediction based on behavior mining, which combines marketing models and deep learning methods. In the first stage, we integrate user behaviors before getting into the live room with short video advertising data for traffic prediction. In the second stage, based on the traditional marketing model, AIDA (Attention-Interest-Desire-Action), we design a funnel convolutional neural network (FCNN) to learn sophisticated behaviors in the live room in both time and behavior orientations, and take the predicted traffic volume as the auxiliary information for sales prediction. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets from Douyin illustrate the efficacy of our proposed method, which shows the value of fusing marketing models with deep learning techniques. Furthermore, the in-depth analysis provides practical insights into user behaviors for livestream e-commerce. Collapse

Abstract: Digitalization is transforming the dynamic of entrepreneurial opportunity pursuit to the extent that traditional theories of internationalization may no longer effectively explain firms’ internationalization patterns. To test alternative perspectives, we introduce a business model design lens to the study of entrepreneurial internationalization in the digital age. Drawing on a multiple case study research of six new ventures, we induct a three-layer model of internationalization process, which distinguishes between digital, ecosystem, and country layers. While the country layer is extensively studied in traditional internationalization models, the digital and ecosystem layers are new. Our case evidence shows that the digitalization of the firm’s context enables it to extend interactions beyond domestic borders already at the value discovery stage, thereby enabling internationalization in the formative stages of business model design process. The internationalization layers also demonstrate how new ventures that start as global, narrow their foreign market scope at later states. Collapse

Abstract: Adequately addressing the grand challenge of poverty requires addressing resource scarcity. However, efforts to provide resources as a means of poverty alleviation have met with mixed success. We explore what makes resource provision effective as a means of poverty alleviation. We adopt a resourcing perspective, which focuses on the relationship between potential resources and schemas, or shared understandings, that shape how resources are used. Consistent with prior research, we find that schemas shape how resources are used in practice. However, we also find that who can access the resources is as consequential as how they are used. In exploring this issue, we identify a new category of schemas related not to use but to access, which we refer to as access schemas. We define access schemas as shared understandings regarding who can appropriately access potential resources. We find that different social groups have distinct schemas regarding access, and we identify three mechanisms—precedence, complementarity, and scaffolding—that shape the way that access schemas are enacted in resource-scarce settings. Our study contributes to the literature on grand challenges by clarifying the link between resource provision and resource use. We also contribute to the literature on resourcing by uncovering mechanisms that shape schema enactment in the presence of conflicting access schemas held by different social groups. Abstract: Underground hacking has evolved from its early countercultural roots to become a complex and varied phenomenon. By combining a historical review of the literature with a content analysis of 30 years of underground hacker communication, we show that hacking has evolved in three waves to embrace learning and creativity, intrusion and crime, as well as politics and cyberwarfare. We uncover a paradoxical relationship between hackers and society at large where underground hacking is considered a digital crime while at the same time inspiring and driving corporate innovation, cybersecurity, and even cyberwarfare. The outcome of our research provides a nuanced picture of the hacker underground by highlighting differences between competing discursive themes across time. Moreover, by translating these themes into a set of six contrasting personas of IS professionals, we discuss how knowledge, technologies, and creative practices of underground hackers are being professionalized. We use this discussion to provide implications and a research agenda for IS studies in cybersecurity, innovation, and cyberwarfare. Collapse

Abstract: Knowledge Integration (KI) or the capability to collate and process distinctive stocks of organizational infor mation is central to innovation. Although an essential capability, KI is also challenging to accomplish in practice due to relational obstacles. The relational obstacles arise because of knowledge boundaries: (a) syntactic boundary where the challenge is to transfer the knowledge; (b) semantic boundary where the challenge is to translate the knowledge; and (c) pragmatic boundary, where the challenge is to transform the knowledge to realize relational rents. In this paper, we propose that these relational obstacles could be resolved through a common lexicon, common meaning, and common interests, or common knowledge of knowledge actors that can serve as potential drivers to realizing relational rents. Analysis of data collected from 139 small firms indicates that common meaning and common interests positively influence KI. Further, KI positively influences organi zational innovation. Moreover, the results demonstrate that novelty plays a crucial role in affecting the strength of relational resources’ relationships with KI capability. As novelty increases, the importance of common meaning and common interests on KI capability increases. Our findings contribute to our understanding of the role of relational obstacles and KI and empirically assess the efficacy of boundary-spanning objects in facilitating KI capability and innovation. Abstract: Information privacy concerns have been rising over a few decades. As per the recent General Data Protection Regulation, organizations need to implement the highest-possible privacy settings by design and default. Following the neo-institutional theory, this study develops a model for understanding the mechanism of information privacy assimilation in Information Technology (IT) organizations. This study treats information privacy as a distinct dimension separate from security. After analyzing a sample survey data of 214 respondents from the IT industry, privacy capability and organizational culture emerged as influencing factors with a statistically significant influence on information privacy assimilation. The findings from this study support the mediating role of senior management participation between the external coercive forces and privacy-related business strategy. Business strategy also plays a mediating role between coercive/normative forces and privacy-related activities within an organization. Here the mimetic forces show a direct influence on privacy-related activities. A positive moderating effect of organizational culture on normative forces and privacy-related activities relationship; and a negative moderating effect of privacy capability on mimetic forces and privacy-related activities relationship are observed. These findings could enable senior managers to respond to institutional pressures by focusing on appropriate factors within an organization for developing effective privacy strategies and actions. This work is an extension of the pilot work that was published in Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS), 2018. The prior work focuses on developing the propositions qualitatively. Building on that, we have formally defined the hypotheses, developed the appropriate survey instrument and collected the primary data which is large enough to do adequate analysis. Adopted a quantitative approach using an extensive sample survey of IT organizations, followed a more rigorous process for data collection, analysis, and discussion of the results. In addition, based on the lessons learned from the pilot study, we have updated the research model and hypotheses with a focus on privacy-related business strategy and activities. Collapse
