Abstract: Due to ongoing digitalization and the social distancing measures that came along with the COVID-19 pandemic, the working conditions and environments have changed for many individuals. Because of increased telework, the use of digital technologies for communicating and collaborating at work has been intensified, which can cause technostress. With longitudinal data from two surveys – one before and one during the COVID-19 pandemic – the paper analyzes the relationship between four social support dimensions (supervisor support, co-worker support, sense of community at work, and family support) and technostress creators. The study shows that social support can be an effective inhibitor of technostress creators. However, social support dimensions have to be differentiated in that regard. Further, the results show that the inhibiting effect of family support has become even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results contribute to technostress research and research with regard to the new normal of working after the pandemic. Collapse

Abstract: Algorithmic decision-making (ADM) through automation has benefits but must be implemented responsibly. Several mathematical definitions of fair outcomes exist, but it remains unclear how these align with human perceptions of fairness. We conducted a survey experiment (N=258) examining common machine-learning definitions of fairness (demographic parity, equal opportunity, and equalized odds) in the context of algorithmic job interview invitations. We find that humans perceive the simple fairness definition of demographic parity as less fair than a more complex one that considers whether the invitees were eligible. Collapse

Abstract: After many years of reluctance and lack of commitment, companies are increasingly prioritizing sustainability and setting ambitious goals. Along with the rise of organizational sustainability strategy (OSS), the role of information systems (IS) in sustainability has increased and become a source of sustainability at the organizational level. Although ever more companies consider sustainability a top priority, they struggle to turn sustainability strategies into practice and observe measurable results. We followed a mixed methods approach combining qualitative interview data (n=13) and quantitative data from a multi-continental industry survey (n=551) to generate an in-depth understanding of the role of IS-enabled sustainability practices in influencing the organizational sustainability strategy-implementation gap. With our study, we demonstrate that IS-enabled sustainability practices mediate the impact of OSS on organizational sustainability performance (OSP) and that these practices are enabled by IS capabilities that are critical to implementing sustainability practices (technology intelligence, data analysis, and digital twinning capability). Abstract: Despite increasing attention to online learning worldwide, learning complex technologies online has always been challenging and even a hindrance to students who are subjected to elevated levels of technostress. In contrast to most previous studies that focused on the negative side of technostress, this study investigated both the negative and positive sides of technostress. Based on the Challenge Hindrance Framework (CHF), the Holistic Stress Model (HSM), and the Person-Environment Fit (P-E Fit) model, we examined how challenge and hindrance techno-stressors caused distress and eustress in online students and lead to associated outcomes. We empirically validated the research model by analyzing survey data collected from 565 online graduate business students enrolled at a university in the United States. The results revealed that some hindrance and challenge techno-stressors were associated with techno-distress and techno-eustress, which further impacted student satisfaction and student retention. We discussed the contributions and implications and provided future research directions. Collapse

Abstract: COVID-19 restrictions significantly affected SMEs, which have faced many challenges to their sustainability within this fragile new environment. This study proposes a holistic framework of sustainable performance by interrelating factors showing robust associations to produce this effect' for achieving sustainable performance in SMEs, through integrating the Technology Organisation Environment (TOE) and Resource Based View (RBV) models, to test how sustainable green practices can process the TOE factors when affecting sustainable performance. The research focuses on SMEs with worldwide employees and involves data collected from a range of different employees belonging to four different managerial levels. The process incorporated the analysis of 669 questionnaires to test the proposed hypotheses using structural equation modeling. Findings suggest that, together, TOE factors represent crucial inputs for green practices such as green training, green performance appraisal, that, in turn, mean critical processes lead to sustainable performance (output). Additionally, the findings should also inspire SMEs to focus even more effort on internal technological and organisational factors and to encourage an eco-friendly culture that would demand stakeholders adopt a more positive environmental stance. Abstract: In a longitudinal study of differences in framing an introduction of Grammarly, we find a gain framing to be more effective. Grammarly is an online spell-checking tool that can, for example, improve the text quality of students. We used the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology UTAUT to study framing effects on adoption behavior. In a survey experiment, we presented students with a description of Grammarly that was either framed towards potential gains or potential losses use would avoid. Contrary to prior findings in the context of IS security, we find a gain framing to be more effective. We discovered, however, that the framing was only effective after three months, which offers initial insights into the effects of framing in information systems and raises new questions. We plan to study this effect further in a follow-up study with a larger number of participants. Collapse

Abstract: Accelerated technological innovations have led to shorter product life cycles. Yet, consumers often decide not to discard the incumbent technology in favor of a new technology. To explain this decision-making process, a rich research stream has investigated subconscious motivations. However, there is little understanding of the role of conscious motivations and, more importantly, their interplay with subconscious motivations in their decisions. Using the value appreciation perspective, we controlled for the predictors of the second version of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) and leverage prospect theory to enrich our understanding of users’ continuance intentions. We conceptualize status quo preference with two new constructs—namely, the value of status quo and users’ commitment to status quo—and integrate them with other known predictors of continuance intentions (related to an incumbent system)—i.e., trust and habit. We empirically test our model in two studies. Study 1 was conducted among 2,096 users of smartphones in Hong Kong. Study 2 reports longi­ tudinal data, across three waves of data collection over a period of six months, from 240 analysts introduced to a new technology to support their work in a large financial services organization. The findings support our model and suggest that (1) users’ status quo preferences significantly determine continuance intentions; and (2) trust and habit have an effect on users’ status quo preferences. These findings advance knowledge on continuance intentions by integrating the effects of users’ conscious and subconscious intentions to continue using the incumbent technology. Collapse

Abstract: As online group buying (OGB) businesses increasingly face strong competition, understanding the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of their customers is critical. Hence, the purpose of this study is to understand why customers choose one OGB vendor over others. By extending the transaction cost economics (TCE) theory, we explain OGB customers’ purchase behavior. We conducted a two-stage online survey. The first survey (T1) captured the perceptions of the respondents before making a purchase (i.e., purchase intention and its antecedents, namely unpredictability, trust, customizability, and frequency of OGB use). In the second stage (T2), we collected responses from the participants of the first study who committed at least one purchase in the last month. The second survey collected responses about the frequency of OGB use, purchase behavior, and online customer review (OCR). Data were analyzed with partial-least-square-based structural equation modelling technique (PLS-SEM). Results suggest that unpredictability, trust, and customizability influence purchase intention and are influenced by the frequency of OGB use. In addition, customizability decreases unpredictability. Finally, in seeking an answer to how to convert potential customers into actual customers, we found that OCR is a moderator of the relationship between purchase intention and purchase behavior. The findings from the longitudinal study extend TCE theory in electronic markets by capturing the OGB dynamics (i.e., antecedents and effects), the mediating effects (i.e., purchase intention) and the moderating effect (i.e., OCR) in a robust nomological relationship. Abstract: Most research on cloud computing has been conducted in large firms. However, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) constitute the majority of organizations worldwide. SMEs differ significantly from large firms and organizational size is a significant contingency variable in the organizational context. Accordingly, we examine how SMEs and large firms differ in leveraging cloud capabilities to achieve performance. We suggest that Business Scalability mediates the link between Enterprise Cloud Capability and a firm's Business Performance. We further hypothesize that the positive effect of Enterprise Cloud Capability on Business Performance is stronger for SMEs as they benefit more from Business Scalability than larger firms. We collect primary matched pair survey data from 147 small and large firms in India to test our research model. Empirical analysis using partial least squares provides support for our primary thesis that SMEs and large firms derive value from Enterprise Cloud Capability through different value creation pathways.
