Abstract: Algorithmic control (AC) is an emerging phenomenon shaping the future of work. While AC is already well established in the platform economy, it is also gaining traction in traditional organizations. Given that AC represents a new phenomenon, it still suffers from a relatively immature conceptual basis. Here, an up-and-coming conceptual AC framework is the so-called "6R" framework by Kellogg et al. (2020). This framework, however, has not been conceptually and empirically validated yet, which is the focus of the study at hand. To validate the 6R framework, we use a combination of a literature review (topdown) and interviews (bottom-up). Our study sets forth to refine and extend the framework, resulting in an updated 5RSM framework of AC. The proposed framework represents an updated conceptualization of AC, applicable to both platform and traditional work settings, and lays the foundation for future research, including scale development. Abstract: Mindfulness practices are valuable exercises for physical and mental health. Various digital applications exist that support individuals in practicing mindfulness. Following the trend of gamifying utilitarian systems, many mindfulness applications (MAs) incorporate game design elements (GDEs). However, little is known about users' GDE preferences in this unique context. In line with extant research that investigated users' GDE preferences in other contexts, we conducted an online survey among 168 potential users of MAs. The results indicate that users generally prefer progress, levels, and goals in MAs, while leaderboards and avatars are not highly rated. Furthermore, we identified four contextindependent and three context-dependent rationales that help explain users' GDE preferences. By providing first insights into MAs as a peculiar application context for gamification, our work contributes to advancing knowledge of contextual differences in users' GDE preferences while challenging the extant research assumptions regarding the dominance of contextual factors in forming user preferences. Abstract: Crowdworking is increasingly being applied by companies to outsource tasks beyond their core competencies flexibly and cost-effectively to an unknown group. However, the anonymous and financially incentivized nature of crowdworkers creates information asymmetries and conflicts of interest, leading to inefficiencies and intensifying the principal-agent problem. Our paper offers a solution to the widespread problem of inefficient Crowdworking campaigns. We first derive the currently applied Crowdworking campaign process based on a qualitative study. Subsequently, we identify the broadest adverse selection and moral hazard problems in the process. We then analyze how the blockchain application of smart contracts can counteract those challenges and develop a process model that maps a Crowdworking campaign using smart contracts. We explain how our developed process significantly reduces adverse selection and moral hazard at each stage. Thus, our research provides approaches to make online labor more attractive and transparent for companies and online workers. Collapse

Abstract: We examine how social influence interacts with other information sources to affect user behaviors in the context of medical crowdfunding. We conduct a large-scale randomized field experiment on a leading medical crowdfunding platform, showing friends’ donation information to donors in the treatment group and not showing such information in the control group, and examine how the likelihood to donate differs. In addition, we conduct a survey on Amazon Mechanical Turk to evaluate the informational value of different case attributes in conveying the patients’ need for help to donors. We find that for cases containing attributes with high informational value (e.g., minor patient, severe conditions), social influence is insignificant. In contrast, for cases lacking attributes with high informational value, social influence significantly increases donors’ likelihood to donate. Overall, our results show that the impact of social influence depends on the informational value of other information sources, suggesting that the social influence in our context is primarily informational. Our findings indicate that rather than generating an entrenchment effect, where cases with attributes of high informational value attract disproportionate benefits, social influence can increase donation likelihood to cases that lack such attributes, promoting more equal access to resources overall. Abstract: Experiential learning through games is becoming increasingly relevant as games exert an enormous influence on the imaginarium of newer generations. This paper details the use of a game-based learning process focusing on game-making in relation to ethical issues of digitalization for graduate education in digital service innovation. Within the context of a masters education, students from diverse knowledge backgrounds learned about and reflected upon ethical issues related to social media usage by playing, remixing and designing games using the Design Games Framework. This paper illustrates that game-making can enable non-designer students to work with ethical issues. There are good possibilities to explore ethics through designing tabletop games, and having diverse groups of participants can be advantageous. Using a qualitative approach based on observation and interviews, the paper contributes to the body of literature focusing on experiential learning through game-based approaches and to the consolidation of the Design Games Framework. Abstract: The Industrial-Metaverse will create interactions between the physical and virtual worlds to extend operations in the physical industry. This particularity and the demand for increasing immersion in the Metaverse require using XR technologies called User-Metaverse interfaces (UMI). How such a UMI must be designed for the industrial-Metaverse is unknown. This study adopts a design science approach to design a UMI based on social-cognitive theory (SCT). According to SCT, creating user-generated Metaverse content is crucial to the UMI design. It empowers users to generate content through their efforts, leading to higher self-efficacy and user engagement. We formulate two theoretically based design principles and instantiate a software artifact, which we evaluate in a laboratory experiment with 57 participants. Our study shows the importance of belief in success in the design of future UMI. Furthermore, our design principles show significant positive outcome expectations of users in their interaction with the software artifact. Collapse

Abstract: The recent technological evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) and data sciences has created opportunities for intrapreneurs in non-platform firms to expand their businesses into platform ecosystem-related businesses. However, previous studies have typically focused on cases involving entrepreneurs. This study aims to clarify how intrapreneurs’ design for platform ecosystems could be different from that of entrepreneurs. We conducted an action design research (ADR) project in collaboration with a company for 29 months, and designed a platform ecosystem structure based on technological platforms related to radio frequency identifiers (RFID). Our main contribution is the following six-step process that describes how intrapreneurs design platform ecosystems: (1) designing an initial ecosystem structure based on platform ecosystem concepts and certain concepts related to the targeted market; (2) analyzing past business cases; (3) making the ecosystem structure into concrete shape; (4) verifying its validity; (5) elaborating the ecosystem structure; and (6) proposing the designed ecosystem business. Our findings highlight the differences between intrapreneurs’ and entrepreneurs’ designs of the ecosystem. First, when the design processes are underway, the direction of the design of the ecosystem needs to be flexibly modified to align with the strategy of the firm. Second, evidence for the success of the proposed platform ecosystem is required to reduce uncertainty and clarify the legitimacy of the proposition. Third, the structure of a platform ecosystem designed by intrapreneurs becomes a style that supports the existing businesses and networks of the firm. Collapse

Abstract: The globalization of the world economy increases the role of value chains, where disruptions in the realization of the logistics processes occur repeatedly. Climate changes, pandemics, and military conflicts further increase the difficulties in matching supply and demand in a vast majority of networks. As a result, the digital transformation of Supply Chain Management (SCM) often referred to as Digital Supply Chain (DSC) is considered an important solution for several SCM concerns. Extensive subject matter literature research pointed out that several technologies have been studied and implemented as DSC solutions contrary to blockchain technology. Therefore, the research aims of this article is to examine the challenges of DSC with particular emphasis on blockchain technology perception in this context. Research has been conducted via structured in-depth interviews with SCM experts. Study results highlighted that blockchain is perceived by SCM experts as a technology with significant capability to support the creation of DSC, but unfortunately used at all. They also pointed out that blockchain should not be the technology of the first choice when initiating the digitization of SCM processes, but potentially beneficial for mature DSC. Collapse

Abstract: During a disaster, a large number of disaster-related social media posts are widely disseminated. Only a small percentage of disaster-related information is posted by eyewitnesses. The post of a disaster eyewitness offers an accurate depiction of the disaster. Therefore, the information posted by the eyewitness is preferred over the other source of information as it is more effective at helping organize rescue and relief operations and potentially saving lives. In this work, we propose a multi-channel convolutional neural network (MCNN) that uses three different word-embedding vectors together to classify disaster-related tweets into eyewitness, non-eyewitness, and don’t know classes. We compared the performance of the proposed multi-channel convolutional neural network with several attention-based deep-learning models and conventional machine learning-models such as recurrent neural network, gated recurrent unit, Long-Short-Term-Memory, convolutional neural network, logistic regression, support vector machine, and gradient boosting. The proposed multi-channel convolutional neural network achieved an F1-score of 0.84, 0.88, 0.84, and 0.86 with four disaster-related datasets of floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and wildfires, respectively. The experimental results show that the training MCNN model with different word embedding together performs better than the conventional machine-learning models and several other deep-learning models. Abstract: Mergers and acquisition deals are uncertain, with completion likelihood changing throughout the negotiation process. During negotiations, the firms process new information to modify their choices. This study aims to examine the dynamic nature of the M&A negotiation process. The study uses a sample of 983 worldwide unsolicited deals from 1999 to 2019 and classifies M&A deal outcomes using logistic regression, decision tree, and random forest classifiers. Ownership considerations and advisors are essential elements of the negotiation. Ownership sought has the potential to impact the deal's complexity and exercisable control. Prior ownership may either help gain information or recover due diligence costs. The advisors may assist the firms in the available information's financial and legal due diligence. Prior research lacks the negotiation period’s dynamism and gives mixed results for the impact of ownership and the role of advisors. We uniquely identify a non-linear inverted U-shaped relationship between the negotiation period and completion likelihood. The results prove that prior ownership, over the negotiation period, serves the dual objective of assisting deal completion and acting as a substitute for the termination fee. The acquirer and target advisors help with the completion of the deal. The varying effects for ownership and advisors over the negotiation process help explain the conflicting results in previous studies. The evolving negotiating circumstances play an important role in affecting the outcome. Our work shows the importance of temporal characteristics and the dynamic nature of decision-making during the M&A negotiation process and encourages further studies exploring processual theories.
