Abstract: In the field of information systems, new technologies are giving rise to a wide range of new research topics that present researchers with new challenges. Innovations, such as artificial intelligence, have an enormous impact on society, in addition to technological progress towards automation, above all or precisely because of this. In this context, Society 5.0 was initiated to establish criteria for research and its artifacts. In this paper, evaluation criteria of a Society 5.0 are identified, which should be considered for Design Science Research artifacts in the future. Through a comprehensive literature review, 14 evaluation criteria and a new DSR goal were identified and integrated into the existing framework of Hevner et al. (2018). The paper provides researchers with an augmented DSR evaluation framework with aspects of Society 5.0. Collapse

Abstract: Changes in customer demands and technological advances increase the complexity of production scheduling. Hence, current production scheduling algorithms are not sufficiently good. Additionally, advances in the research of Machine Learning algorithms drive the development of new scheduling algorithms. Each algorithm’s quality is problem-dependent, making it challenging to find the best algorithm for a given production scenario. Benchmark problems only provide guidance as they do not reflect real-world situations. To address this issue, in this article, we develop the software artifact Simfia that allows researchers and practitioners to evaluate production scheduling algorithms in highly customizable experiments. To create the solution, we follow a design science research approach. We identify 30 functional requirements, develop the solution prototypically and demonstrate it in an exemplary production scenario. The artifact is developed in a service-oriented architecture where scheduling algorithms are provided as individually deployable scheduling services that Simfia manages. This solution enables researchers and practitioners to experiment with production scheduling algorithms in highly configurable production scenarios. Collapse

Abstract: Enterprise architecture (EA) initiatives consist of functions, processes, tools, instruments, and principles to guide the design of IT and its alignment with business. EA is often presented as a silver bullet to ensure that IT contributes to business. Yet, many EA initiatives do not work out or even fail, but in the literature this area is undertheorized. This study aims to understand the factors influencing the failure of EA initiatives. We identified 15 factors and invited 8 EA experts to evaluate the factors and their influence based on an approach combining grey systems theory, Decision-Making and Trial Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), and Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM). The findings indicate that the factors are correlated and interwoven in complex causal chains. This study reveals the root factor and suggests enhancing high-level managers’ EA knowledge and ensuring communication and leadership skills of enterprise architects as the starting point to avoid EA failure. Abstract: The development and increasing use of technology worldwide can lead to potential negative consequences for individuals' well-being and productivity. To counteract negative consequences, both scientific research and practice have shown increasing interest in digital detox research, a rising phenomenon of abstinence and temporary or complete disengagement from digital technologies. To lay a foundation for future research, we conducted a systemic literature review with a focus on the methodological aspects of the existing empirical digital detox studies. Our literature search process revealed a total of 65 studies. Our analyses of this literature basis revealed five different research fields (communication, education, tourism, well-being and health, work environment), and we analyzed the empirical studies in these fields regarding applied research approach, research method, and sample size. This review provides methodological insights to advance the scientific inquiry on digital detox research, a relatively nascent, yet increasingly relevant research topic. Collapse

Abstract: The digital transformation of supply chains is an important yet challenging endeavor for many companies. Prescriptive maturity models are tools that can offer valuable guidance and support. However, no prescriptive maturity models in this field of research nor a process for their development can be identified in the literature. Therefore, this paper describes the design of a procedure model to develop a prescriptive maturity model based on design science research and a systematic literature review. Furthermore, the procedure model is initially tested by applying it to develop a prescriptive maturity model using the digital transformation of supply chains as an exemplary field of application. The results are evaluated based on expert interviews with four companies, leading to generally positive feedback. However, as the evaluation of the procedure model is preliminary, limitations and future paths to improve this work are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: The digitization of the manufacturing domain results in an enormous amount of available data decision-makers are continuously exposed to. Consequently, critical alarm information must be easily comprehensible and suit decision-makers' preferences to facilitate timely reactions and thus prevent harm to production processes and employees. However, despite its importance, academia and practice show little consensus regarding alarm design in manufacturing dashboards. Against this background, the purpose of our study is twofold. First, we identified 5 factors for visual alarm design with overall 12 design options in a structured literature review. Second, we investigated the effect these design options have on users' comprehension and preferences in a conjoint study and a best-worst scaling approach with 98 participants with experience working in manufacturing. Our results show that alarm description and their visual integration are the most important factors for alarm design. In this regard, a cluster analysis reveals more nuanced and more stable preferences in more experienced users. Further, we find that color-coding-based content classification entails best performance in recognizing alarms. We contribute to academia and practice by providing actionable insights that may support improving alarm design in manufacturing. Collapse

Abstract: Immersive Virtual Reality (later VR) has its potential in enabling learning experiences. Several studies adopt experiential learning as a key concept to understand the outcomes of VR. This study consists of two parts -the first part conducts a systematic literature review on VR experiential learning and suggests seven main dimensions for the concept identified by the existing literature: engagement, sociability, contextual information, physical sensation, interactivity, cognitions, and presence. The second part adopts a value co-creation and co-destruction approach to empirically test the construction underlying VR experiential learning. The findings indicate 33 value cocreation and 19 value co-destruction constructs contributing to the seven dimensions. The suggested seven value construct dimensions combined with our own empirical findings and the theory of experiential learning, our research results build understanding about the experiential learning in the VR context and further encourages future VR learning research to test and validate these propositions. Abstract: Major challenges in contemporary information systems development demand new development approaches, such as innovation ecosystems, consisting of a focal innovation platform surrounded by independent developers. The attraction of third-party developers and the amplification of generativity in extension development call for sophisticated boundary resources. As demarcation points between an innovation platform and external developers, boundary resources entail a strategic value and need to be managed carefully. However, existing research does not provide an approach for the holistic management of boundary resources from design to retirement. We apply a design science research approach consisting of two design cycles involving a literature review identifying 26 application lifecycles and the analysis of eight innovation platforms in e-commerce. We evaluated the model for boundary resource management in interviews with nine domain experts. We develop an integrated boundary resource management lifecycle as a specialization of application lifecycle management for the holistic management of boundary resources in innovation ecosystems addressing third-party developers. The boundary resource management lifecycle consists of four layers: boundary resource governance, continuous communication, technical boundary resources, and supplementary boundary resources. It decouples technical and supplementary boundary resources while emphasizing their intertwined nature for ecosystem participants. Owners of innovation platforms can instantiate the reference procedure model for attracting developers. Collapse

Abstract: Digital ventures face significant organizational challenges when scaling, including increasing sales and employee numbers, that withdraw resources from working on their market offerings. While digital entrepreneurship literature stresses the importance of creating processes that balance structure and flexibility to deal with these challenges, business process management (BPM) literature focuses on improving pre-designed business processes. We reconcile these perspectives in a structured literature review to explore how BPM can support digital venturing. We identify synergies and tensions between BPM and digital entrepreneurship and propose three avenues for future research. These include exploring ambidextrous BPM in digital ventures, treating digital venturing as a business process, and developing capabilities for balancing flexibility and structure. We contribute to information systems research by critically reviewing the literature on BPM and digital entrepreneurship and providing potential areas for future investigation. Collapse

Abstract: Over the last years, configurational research has become increasingly popular in the Information Systems (IS) discipline. Researchers value configurational methods like Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) as their application contributes to a better understanding of complex phenomena. QCA helps to uncover interrelations of conditions that lead to an outcome, building on the principles of equifinality, conjunctural causation, and asymmetry. More recently, IS researchers have started to analyze qualitative data, like case study data, with QCA. However, there is a lack of methodological guidance on how to calibrate qualitative data into set membership values for QCA. Therefore, this paper structures methodological steps and the associated options to calibrate qualitative data from an interdisciplinary perspective and critically reviews the observed methodological choices in IS research. This paper also gives recommendations for calibrating qualitative data to support informed methodological choices for future research. Collapse
