Abstract: Digital technology has advanced rapidly in the last few years. Consequently, companies need to transform their business and operations models to keep up with these advances, placing digital transformation (DT) as a top priority. Beyond the possible effects of using more digital technologies, is more innovation. One way in which companies can stimulate DT is by creating a new top-management position, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO). Although evidence has been found about the relationship between digital technologies and innovation, the role of the CDO as an enabler has been less studied. We use difference-in-difference estimators to measure this effect, using a unique dataset with 39 companies that appointed a CDO and 39 comparable companies that did not as a control group. We find a significant increase in patent filings as early as the first year CDO's appointment. We find evidence that a managerial role can have an effect on innovation. Collapse

Abstract: Digital software platforms allow third parties to develop applications and thus extend their functionality. Platform owners provide platform boundary resources that allow for application development. For developers, platform integration, understood as the employment of platform resources, helps to realize application functionality effectively. Simultaneously, it requires integration effort and increases dependencies. Developers are interested to know whether integration contributes to success in hypercompetitive platform settings. While aspects of platform participation have been studied, research on a comprehensive notion of integration and related implications are missing. By proposing a platform integration model, this study supports a better understanding of integration. Concerning dynamics related to integration, effects were tested using information from over 82,000 Apple AppStore applications. Regression model analysis reveals that application success and customer satisfaction is positively influenced by platform integration. To achieve superior results, developers should address multiple aspects of integration, such as devices, data, the operating system, the marketplace as well as other applications, and provide updates. Finally, the study highlights the importance for all platform participants and their possibilities to employ integration as a strategic instrument. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the use of tax analytics and automation (TAA) technologies in corporate tax departments. We investigate the factors that influence the degree to which TAA technologies are used as an integral part of the tax department's processes. A survey of tax professionals from Fortune 1000 companies was conducted to gain an understanding of the level of TAA routinization that exists in their corporate tax departments. This study extends the research literature on assimilation of innovative technologies by using a unique sample in a tax department setting. We adapt a technology diffusion model from Zhu, Kraemer and Xu (2006) and predict that factors related to technological, organizational and environmental contexts are related to the degree of routinization of TAA technologies. Results indicate that the context factors of technology integration, managerial obstacles, and regulatory environment are all related to the level of TAA technology used by corporate tax departments. However, service orientation turns out to be as much of a managerial challenge as of a technical one. In order to better understand these challenges we answer the following questions: What are the characteristics of successful implementations of service oriented information systems? What are the critical success factors influencing these characteristics? For answering these questions we successfully test a cause-effect relationship model. Abstract: Best practice exemplars suggest that digital platforms play a critical role in managing supply chain activities and partnerships that generate performance gains for firms. However, there is limited academic investigation on how and why information technology can create performance gains for firms in a supply chain management (SCM) context. Grant's (1996) theoretical notion of higher-order capabilities and a hierarchy of capabilities has been used in recent information systems research by Barua et al. (2004), Sambamurthy et al. (2003), and Mithas et al. (2004) to reframe the conversation from the direct performance impacts of IT resources and investments to how and why IT shapes higher-order process capabilities that create performance gains for firms. We draw on the emerging IT-enabled organizational capabilities perspective to suggest that firms that develop IT infrastructure integration for SCM and leverage it to create a higher-order supply chain integration capability generate significant and sustainable performance gains. A research model is developed to investigate the hierarchy of IT-related capabilities and their impact on firm performance. Data were collected from 110 supply chain and logistics managers in manufacturing and retail organizations. Our results suggest that integrated IT infrastructures enable firms to develop the higher-order capability of supply chain process integration. This capability enables firms to unbundle information flows from physical flows, and to share information with their supply chain partners to create information-based approaches for superior demand planning, for the staging and movement of physical products, and for streamlining voluminous and complex financial work processes. Furthermore, IT-enabled supply chain integration capability results in significant and sustained firm performance gains, especially in operational excellence and revenue growth. Managerial initiatives should be directed at developing an integrated IT infrastructure and leveraging it to create process capabilities for the integration of resource flows between a firm and its supply chain partners. Abstract: Organizations increasingly need to build an enterprise-wide capability to leverage technology that is distributed in different business units. Some organizations establish enterprise architecture (EA) standards to enable greater compatibility of information technology (IT) components and integration of applications and data across the enterprise. Through a firm-level survey, we sought to answer two key questions about the use of EA standards: (1) How do different governance mechanisms affect the use of EA standards? and (2) To what extent does the use of EA standards help organizations to improve the sharing and integration of IT resources across the enterprise? We identified four key governance mechanisms for EA standards management and examined how each mechanism affected the use of EA standards. We also examined how the use of EA standards affects the management of IT infrastructure, applications, and data resources across business units. Our empirical results showed that the use of EA standards is effective in helping organizations to better manage their IT resources. Our study also provides detailed insights into how organizations can set up governance mechanisms to facilitate the use of EA standards in achieving enterprise-wide goals. Collapse

Abstract: Electronic markets are frequently touted to be highly efficient. The prevailing hypothesis is that very low information search costs will enable buyers to expand their product information search and comparison beyond what is feasible in conventional markets. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the relative efficiency of product search in current travel service markets. We report the results of our analysis based on an experimental setting with 92 subjects. Our conclusions tend to disagree with previous predictions about the efficiency of electronic markets. The electronic markets observed were found to be at best as efficient as their conventional counterparts. Our results suggest that poor availability of product information and a lack of systems integration severely limit the efficiency of consumer search in present electronic markets. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates strategic and organizational determinants of adoption/non-adoption of strategic marketing information systems that differ in degree of sophistication. We identify potentially relevant variables and relate them to the use of database marketing (DBM) systems. Using an obtained sample of 49% of all major banks, building societies and insurance companies in the UK, we compare users and non-users and, within the users, we identify intercorrelations with those variables linked to degree of sophistication.Adoption of DBM systems is closely associated with the organization placing a greater strategic importance on direct marketing decisions, strategic integration of information technology (IT) and marketing, the possession of a large direct marketing grouping and a strong marketing and information orientation. These factors, coupled with a greater degree of organizational slack and weaker organization control of resources and more decisive decision making, which separate adopting organizations from non-adopters.Once adoption has occurred, greater DBM sophistication is closely linked to the power of the direct marketing function, the importance placed on the strategic integration of IT and marketing, the size of the direct marketing grouping, and the organization's overall information orientation.
