Abstract: Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Cloud computing as the next stage of internet evolution provides all the computing resources as services over the Internet. In the SaaS cloud computing research area, there are many studies from the user’s point of view, but there is relatively little research on the supplier’s success strategy. The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the factors that determine the market competitiveness necessary for SaaS cloud computing providers to survive in the mid to long term. We presented application dimension and technology maturity as SaaS idiosyncratic factors and show how these factors influence the business performance of SaaS providers through a differentiation strategy and low-cost strategy. Using a multivariate latent growth curve model, this study analyzed 199 strategic business units of SaaS cloud computing providers in Korea for three years. Our results find that SaaS cloud computing idiosyncratic factors did not significantly enhance the software providers’ business performance in the early stage. However, they significantly affected the growth rate of their customer base and financial performance as the SaaS technology became mature over time. In addition, this study identifies a set of business, strategic, and technical considerations to guide the practitioners’ decision-making process for selecting an appropriate SaaS cloud computing model. Abstract: Recently, several scholars have argued that the information system (IS) field needs to reduce its reliance on reference theories and focus on developing "indigenous" theoretical knowledge, suggesting that such a shift may help to increase the independence of the IS discipline. While original IS theory is likely to have larger impacts, the uptake of such ideas may also be more uncertain. To investigate such effects, we conduct a scientometric study on 211 research articles published in the two top IS journals, MISQ and ISR. We investigate the uptake of studies that draw on exploitative (i.e., exploiting existing theories from other disciplines) and explorative (i.e., exploration of new theoretical frameworks within the discipline) knowledge, respectively. We find that explorative knowledge receives, on average, a higher quantity of citations. Over time explorative knowledge manifests a higher variance in citations received. Further, we find that explorative knowledge is more likely to assume more sophisticated conceptions of the IT artifact compared to exploitative knowledge. Last, exploitative knowledge, due to its platform nature, interacts with reputation effects to a greater degree than explorative knowledge. We conclude by providing guidance to both individual researchers as well as to the IS discipline as a whole. Collapse

Abstract: In March 2018, a series of anti-social and racial riots in Sri Lanka led to a governmentcontrolled ban of all social media use in the country for 14 days. This nation-wide ban included the use of all social media such as Facebook, Twitter and communication apps like WhatsApp, Viber and WeChat. Until the day of the sanctions, a population of 23 million in Sri Lanka had never experienced government sanctions, restrictions or interventions on social media use. This sudden ban provided a unique window of opportunity to investigate social media non-use and use and how it might lead to psychological distress. Using a longitudinal study design of two surveys, analyzing data of 476 and 205 respectively, this study makes insightful preliminary observations of social media non-use and use continuum. Collapse

Abstract: Kim & Kankanhalli introduced status quo bias perspective (SQBP) to help understand information systems (hereinafter IS) users' resistance behaviour. Since then, scholars have widely referred to the theoretical perspective to understand user resistance to and adoption of new IS and information and communication technologies (hereinafter ICT). However, our analysis found that while adopting SQBP, researchers focused primarily on rational cost-and-benefit analysis, rather than on the fundamental tenet of SQBP that highlights 'bias' in users' decision-making on account of their cognitive limitations that lead to bounded rationality. In addition, some of the key constructs used in SQBP were not properly interpreted or were oversimplified in their operationalization. This research note aims to provide guidance for utilizing and analysing SQBP and its constructs for future IS user resistance/adoption research. Because SQBP provides unique insights into 'bias' in human decision-making in its presentation of bounded rationality, accurate interpretation of its concepts and their investigation can help better understand the different sources of user resistance derived from the status quo bias during new IS and ICT implementation. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Collapse

Abstract: Users are vital to the information security of organizations. In spite of technical safeguards, users make many critical security decisions. An example is users’ responses to security messages – discrete communication designed to persuade users to either impair or improve their security status. Research shows that although users are highly susceptible to malicious messages (e.g., phishing attacks), they are highly resistant to protective messages such as security warnings. Research is therefore needed to better understand how users perceive and respond to security messages. In this article, we argue for the potential of NeuroIS – cognitive neuroscience applied to Information Systems – to shed new light on users’ reception of security messages in the areas of (1) habituation, (2) stress, (3) fear, and (4) dual-task interference. We present an illustrative study that shows the value of using NeuroIS to investigate one of our research questions. This example uses eye tracking to gain unique insight into how habituation occurs when people repeatedly view security messages, allowing us to design more effective security messages. Our results indicate that the eye movement-based memory (EMM) effect is a cause of habituation to security messages – a phenomenon in which people unconsciously scrutinize stimuli that they have previously seen less than other stimuli. We show that after only a few exposures to a warning, this neural aspect of habituation sets in rapidly, and continues with further repetitions. We also created a polymorphic warning that continually updates its appearance and found that it is effective in substantially reducing the rate of habituation as measured by the EMM effect. Our research agenda and empirical example demonstrate the promise of using NeuroIS to gain novel insight into users’ responses to security messages that will encourage more secure user behaviors and facilitate more effective security message designs. Abstract: Eye-tracking technology has exhibited promise for identifying deception in automated screening systems. Prior deception research using eye trackers has focused on the detection and interpretation of brief oculometric variations in response to stimuli (e.g., specific images or interview questions). However, more research is needed to understand how variations in oculometric behaviors evolve over the course of an interaction with a deception detection system. Using latent growth curve modeling, we tested hypotheses explaining how two oculometric behaviors—pupil dilation and eye-gaze fixation patterns—evolve over the course of a system interaction for three groups of participants: deceivers who see relevant stimuli (i.e., stimuli pertinent to their deception), deceivers who do not see relevant stimuli, and truth-tellers. The results indicate that the oculometric indicators of deceivers evolve differently over the course of an interaction, and that these trends are indicative of deception regardless of whether relevant stimuli are shown. Abstract: Research has identified numerous factors that influence initial technology adoption decisions. However, extant studies consider beliefs to be static rather than dynamic over the adoption time-span. Various models have been employed to identify adoption behavior, pre- and post-adoption, however, there is little research on the dynamics of users’ belief structures over time and the inter-relationships among them. This study aims to investigate the dynamic nature of users’ beliefs and the relationships among their dynamics, i.e., rates of change. We test our research model based on data obtained at three time-windows using a parallel-growth process model. The results reveal that self-efficacy, usefulness and intention to use are likely to be dynamic, and increase with time. The rate of change in self-efficacy influences the rate of change in usefulness, which in turn affects the rate of change in intention to use. This study theoretically contributes to expanding the extant cross-sectional TAM research to include time-phased TAM studies, and highlights the role of self-efficacy as an important determinant of the dynamics. Abstract: This paper investigates the dynamics of users’ beliefs and intention to adopt a new technology during the course of its training. It also identifies the relationships among the dynamic elements over a time continuum. As a research method, we introduce latent growth curve modeling to better analyze the dynamics over a longitudinal time horizon. We provide an outline of the method for a research in progress. In addition, we demonstrate the application of latent growth curve modeling to a secondary data set obtained from Venkatesh et al. (2006). The results indicate that those with a higher level of initial behavioral intention to use are likely to have a higher level of initial use of a technology. In addition, those who have a steeper rate of increase in behavioral intention during the implementation are likely to have a steeper increase in their use of the technology. Collapse
