Abstract: Modern organizations are adopting Big Data-Driven (BDD) systems to obtain and sustain their competitive advantage through improved decisions. However, the changes in the organizational decision structure and processes due to the establishment of these systems raised the question of how becoming data-driven will affect the traditional role of human decision-makers in organizations. Specifically, this research-in-progress study investigates the mechanisms through which the use of BDD systems impacts organizational decisionmakers' power. To address this research question, the study draws on the premises of the strategic contingencies theory of intra-organizational power and the literature on BDD decision-making in organizations and develops a theoretical model to be tested empirically. Abstract: Existing information systems (IS) research on platform control has largely focused on examining how input control (i.e., the mechanisms used to control platform access) affects complementors' intentions and behaviours after their decision to join a digital platform. Yet, our understanding of how input control is perceived before this decision and how such perceptions influence prospective complementors' intention to join a platform is still nascent. In this regard, our study views input control as a salient signal that shapes prospective complementors' expected benefits and costs (i.e., their performance and effort expectancy), and ultimately their decision to join a digital platform. Drawing on signalling theory and the antecedent-benefit-cost (ABC) framework, we conducted a randomized online experiment in the context of donation-based crowdfunding. The experiment results offer empirical support for this view by showing that input control has distinct and complex signalling effects for prospective complementors. In particular, our findings reveal curvilinear and competing signalling effects, with perceived input control increasing both performance expectancy (at a decreasing rate) and effort expectancy (at an increasing rate). Also, we find that performance expectancy linearly increases prospective complementors' intention to join a platform, whereas effort expectancy linearly decreases their intention to do so. These findings imply that the overall relationship between perceived input control and intention to join follows an inverted U-shape curve, which means that neither a low nor a high, but a moderate degree of perceived input control maximizes prospective complementors' intention to join. In sum, the results of our study provide novel and important insights into the signalling role that perceived input control plays in shaping prospective complementors' decision to join a digital platform. Abstract: Online labor platforms (OLPs) use algorithms to manage their workers. Prior research has examined how OLP management shapes workers' attitudes, implicitly assuming that workers have the same preferences. However, research has largely neglected the role of (mis)fits between what workers need and what they receive from OLPs. Therefore, we conducted a survey with 121 Mechanical Turk workers and used polynomial regression analysis of workers' actual needs and perceived OLP supplies. Our results suggest that higher job security fit decreases perceived exploitation and increases system satisfaction, whereas higher compensation fit decreases perceived exploitation. In addition, we find that job security misfit has decreasing marginal effects on perceived exploitation and increasing marginal effects on system satisfaction. Overall, we contribute to a more nuanced understanding of workers' reactions to the design of OLPs by shedding light on the interplay between what gig workers need and what they perceive to receive from such platforms. Abstract: Recruitment is a critical activity for companies, and the research community has also shown significant interest in examining technology recruitment. Companies often communicate how they value their employees along with job requirements to potential candidates in a bid to attract them. However, there is an overall lack of understanding of how candidates react to such information and how their motivation toward the job changes with such online communication. Although there is substantial work that examines the decision-making process of managers who do technical hiring, to the best of our knowledge, there is a paucity of work that investigates the decision-making process of technical candidates. The broad research question studied is how including certain content in online communication about a technical job opportunity may (de)motivate heterogeneous candidates differently in applying for the job. We theorize the underlying process of how including certain content in online job communication may influence candidates’ propensity to apply and their minimum acceptable salary increase if they were to join the company. Additionally, we capture mediating variables that influence the effect of different online content on candidates’ propensity to apply and on candidates’ minimum acceptable salary increase. Abstract: Algorithmic control (AC) refers to organizations’ use of increasingly intelligent algorithms and related digital technology to steer worker behavior. While previous studies have identified and conceptualized various forms of AC in both platform and traditional work contexts, the presented conceptualizations lack measurability. This key shortcoming hampers further empirical research on the current use of AC and its manifold consequences. In this study, we report on the item development process for a scale for measuring perceived AC from a workers’ perspective. Following well-established approaches, an initial item pool was developed. The items were discussed and refined with the support of five academic experts and three AC workers. A subsequent rating study with 98 workers was conducted to ensure the content validity of all items. On this basis, the study at hand presents a comprehensive set of items for both AC in general and its seven sub-dimensions. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations today leverage big data analytics combined with modern information and communication technology (ICT) to control workers in a largely automated manner. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as algorithmic control (AC). Research has shown that worker perceptions of AC applications can impact critical outcomes such as worker resistance, continuance intention, and well-being. Despite recent efforts to better understand these worker-level effects of AC, no systematic measures of workers' perceptions of AC exist to date. In this study, we develop and present a scale to empirically measure AC at the worker level. In particular, following established scale development guidelines, we conceptualize AC in terms of seven distinct forms, and derive, evaluate, and validate a final set of 33 measurement items. In doing so, our study paves the way for a much-needed, more systematic investigation of AC and its worker-level implications. Collapse

Abstract: In this research, we study how non-frugal organizational IT practices can affect employee well-being in completing managerial tasks. Building on the conservation of resource theory, we will examine a three-way interaction effect of the redundancy of required skills, required resources, and obtained results on technology-driven stressors. Data was collected from 357 managers to analyze the proposed three-way interaction effect for techno-overload, techno-complexity, technoinvasion, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. This article highlights the importance of being frugal -that is, acknowledging and diminishing redundancy among ICT assets and usage within organizations -for reducing technostress among employees. Abstract: Significant investments in information systems (IS) over the past decades have led to increasingly complex IS architectures in organisations, which are difficult to understand, operate, and maintain. We investigate this development and associated challenges through a conceptual model that distinguishes four constituent elements of IS architecture complexity by differentiating technological from organisational aspects and structural from dynamic aspects. Building on this conceptualisation, we hypothesise relations between these four IS architecture complexity constructs and investigate their impact on architectural outcomes (i.e., efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability). Using survey data from 249 IS managers, we test our model through a partial least squares (PLS) approach to structural equation modelling (SEM). We find that organisational complexity drives technological complexity and that structural complexity drives dynamic complexity. We also demonstrate that increasing IS architecture complexity has a significant negative impact on efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability. Finally, we show that enterprise architecture management (EAM) helps to offset these negative effects by acting as a moderator in the relation between organisational and technological IS architecture complexity. Thus, organisations without adequate EAM are likely to face large increases in technological complexity due to increasing organisational complexity, whereas organisations with adequate EAM exhibit no such relation. Abstract: This study investigates the effect of individuals' information processing modes on phishing email detection mechanisms and accuracy. Drawing on the heuristic-systematic model of processing, mindful decision-making, and affect-and-persuasion literature, this study examines the antecedents (i.e., heuristic, systematic processing, general and domain mindfulness, and affective state) and behavioral consequences (i.e., detection accuracy) in phishing identification. Using a scenario-based survey experiment this study shows mindfulness and affectivity navigate information processing mechanisms, thus influence phishing detection accuracy. It aims to contribute to information security literature by examining novel associations between general, domain mindfulness and its effect on online users' information processing strategy and phishing detection accuracy. Furthermore, this study contributes to phishing training and awareness by identifying the function of cognitive-affective (affective states, trait mindfulness) and cognitive-behavioral (domain mindfulness) factors on the choice of information processing modes and phishing detection accuracy.
