Abstract: Work identity deals with self-definition in work activities and memberships which massively impact how employees react to digitalization. In the face of the changing world of work, there is increasing scholarly interest in work identity represented in numerous articles. Research produces several essential insights but appears fragmented in diverse conceptualizations and the investigation of multiple dimensions of work identity. Especially contributions in IS use a ‘professional identity’ conceptualization, which is fragmented and varies in definition clarity. We synthesize extant literature and offer a comprehensive work identity conceptualization to provide future research with orientation. The proposed conceptualization enables researchers to mutually investigate individuals based on their work-based self-identity, role identity, and social identities. Last, we present and discuss a research agenda that contributes to utilizing work identity as an analytical tool for digitalizing work. Collapse

Abstract: Growing interest in decentralized web has brought into focus the need to furnish decentralized digital identities that could uproot the dominant centralized solutions, such as single logins provided by social media platforms. However, these multiple efforts to put the end user in the center of identity management rarely relate to individuals' psychological needs related to identity enactment and construction, diminishing their chances for widespread adoption. This paper proposes a network formalization of identity theories that incorporates the specifics of identity processes online. From this model, two general, architectural principles for decentralized digital identities are drawn that might guide future work in this area. Collapse

Abstract: Virtual worlds are currently receiving renewed attention. Notably, advances in immersive technologies, such as virtual reality headsets, allow users to experience interactions with virtual objects by using their bodies in virtual worlds referred to as metaverses. Studies on metaverses have suggested that enabling users to query their environment using their body, or embodiment features, facilitates learning. While such studies' scope includes users' experience in a metaverse with embodiment features, scarce attention has been brought to the role of the perception generated toward themselves through this experience. This study aims at highlighting the role of IT identity in explaining learning effectiveness in metaverses and the impact of embodiment features on this process. We propose to investigate this using an experiment. The findings will contribute to the IT identity stream and the literature on virtual worlds. Abstract: Working conditions of knowledge workers have been subject to rapid change recently. Digital nomadism is no longer a phenomenon that relates only to entrepreneurs, freelancers, and gig workers. Corporate employees, too, have begun to uncouple their work from stationary (home) offices and 9-to-5 schedules. However, pursuing a permanent job in a corporate environment is still subject to fundamentally different values than postulated by the original notion of digital nomadism. Therefore, this paper explores the work identity of what is referred to as ‘corporate nomads’. By drawing on identity theory and the results of semi-structured interviews, the paper proposes a conceptualization of the corporate nomad archetype and presents nine salient identity issues of corporate nomads (e.g., holding multiple contradictory identities, the flexibility paradox, or collaboration constraints). By introducing the ‘corporate nomad’ archetype to the Information Systems literature, this article helps to rethink established conceptions of “home office” and socio-spatial configurations of knowledge work. Abstract: One of the most anticipated questions in the digital age is how the generation who grew up with digital technologies will behave in the workplace. We investigate the role of earlyage digital experience on performance drawing on IT identity theory. Specifically, we hypothesized that early-age digital experience indirectly relates to job performance and work innovation sequentially via IT identity and digital creativity. Additionally, perceived managerial support amplifies IT identity's influences on digital creativity as well as the indirect effects of early-age digital experience on work results. Data collected via a multiple-source and multiple-wave survey from 281 employees in a large Internet company support the research model. This research enriches the understanding of what drives individuals' digital creativity and demonstrates that employees with early-age digital experience are critical resources for organizational competitive advantage in a digital economy. Practical implications for employees' early-age digital use and workplace management are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we confront a paradox in the IS literature that even though our field focuses on the rapid pace of technological change and the dramatic scale of technology-enabled organizational and societal changes, we sometimes find ourselves studying these changes using—largely without question—constructs that were developed in a vastly different IT, user, and organizational environment. We provide guidelines to help assess whether an existing construct warrants updating and to structure the updating task if it is undertaken. Our three-step process provides for a theoretically grounded and comprehensive method that ensures we balance the need for construct updating against the need to sustain our cumulative tradition. We illustrate our guidelines using computer self-efficacy (CSE) as a case study. We document each of the steps involved in analyzing, reconceptualizing, and testing the revised construct information technology self-efficacy (ITSE). Our analyses show that the new construct better explains both traditional and contemporary constructs with a traditional (postal survey) and contemporary (online panel) sample. We discuss the implications of our work both for research on self-efficacy and more broadly for future updating of other important constructs. Collapse

Abstract: The investigation of the appealing indication that a modular product architecture is best associated to a loosely coupled organizational structure—that is, the mirroring hypothesis—has produced contradictory evidence, especially in the dynamic and ambiguous context of new product development. By integrating modularity theory and product-representation theories, we investigate how individual agency affects coordination in teams developing modular products. We conducted a field study of Flower-Net, a globally distributed team in a major IT company, engaged with the development of a modular software using agile practices. Our grounded model shows that, whereas top managers defined the product as modular and coordinated work accordingly, individuals developed different representations of the product’s architecture and conflicting individual coordination practices. We traced the individual development of product architecture representations back to the individual interpretations of organizational roles as more or less “segmented.” Conflicting individual practices, associated to different role-based product representations, were not addressed by the team—that developed a state of illusory concordance—and impaired the functioning of the team. This study contributes to the literature on modularity and the mirroring hypothesis by proposing individual role-based representations as an underexplored level of analysis for the matching between product and organizational modularity (Mirroring Hypothesis II). It also contributes to the debate on how representations affect team coordination, by detailing how role-based product representations can influence team members’ divergence and sustain illusory concordance. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly integrated into enterprises to foster collaboration within humanmachine teams and assist employees with work-related tasks. However, introducing AI may negatively impact employees’ identifications with their jobs as AI is expected to fundamentally change workplaces and professions, feeding into individuals’ fears of being replaced. To broaden the understanding of the AI identity threat, the findings of this study reveal three central predictors for AI identity threat in the workplace: changes to work, loss of status position, and AI identity predicting AI identity threat in the workplace. This study enriches information systems literature by extending our understanding of collaboration with AI in the workplace to drive future research in this field. Researchers and practitioners understand the implications of employees’ identity when collaborating with AI and comprehend which factors are relevant when introducing AI in the workplace. Collapse

Abstract: One of the most significant challenges of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is the low user engagement rate. Despite its importance, few studies have explored this issue. In this paper, we study user behavior in MOOCs through the lens of community design and investigate the role of distinct types of user interactions on engagement and performance. The results of our study demonstrate that both on-topic and off-topic discussions can enhance user engagement and learning outcomes. However, the impact of each discussion type varies based on specific user characteristics. The findings of our paper have significant implications for the providers and designers of MOOC platforms.
