Abstract: The rise in distraction-related traffic accidents necessitates in-car infotainment systems that prioritize safety, as current systems often prioritize entertainment and convenience, contributing to the high number of distracted driving fatalities. Therefore, this paper applied a design science research approach to develop a design theory for Augmented Automotive Spaces that holistically consider safety, interface, interaction, and attention requirements. The main artifact is a design theory intended to help researchers and practitioners understand the design requirements and principles of intuitive, immersive, and attentiongrabbing infotainment user interfaces that enhance safety and overall mobility experience. The design theory was further implemented in a prototypical reference scenario and positively evaluated for developmental usefulness, conciseness, explanatory power, and extendibility. Overall, the authors' work contributes to the research areas of user interface design, infotainment, automotive information systems, and safety measures as well as providing a comprehensive guideline for the development of immersive and safe automotive infotainment systems. Abstract: Cyber-security, which plays a key role in all areas of the digital world, from the power grid to healthcare, is mainly addressed from an analytical, engineering perspective. This research looks at social factors impacting real-life cyber-security, and their possible effects, such as resilience and emergence. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 20 participants from a broad range of international organisations. Their analysis shows that social factors are indeed relevant to cyber-security. Tension within social structures in organisations (e.g., employee-supervisor relationship, and peer pressure within teams) can significantly impact cyber-security effectiveness. The study concludes that cyber-security should be addressed through social-technical system design, in recognition of the fundamental interdependence of social and technical aspects. As a corollary, organisational cyber-security needs to be treated as a so-called wicked problem, for which a reductionist engineering approach is futile. The complexity and ambiguity of cyber-security's socio-technical challenges calls for adequate principles, ways of thinking and methods. Collapse

Abstract: Future healthcare ecosystems integrating human-centered artificial intelligence (AI) will be indispensable. AI-based healthcare technologies can support diagnosis processes and make healthcare more accessible globally. In this context, we conducted a design science research project intending to introduce design principles for user interfaces (UIs) of explainable AI-based (XAI) medical decision support systems (XAI-based MDSS). We used an archaeological approach to analyze the UI of an existing web-based system in the context of skin lesion classification called DIAnA (Dermatological Images – Analysis and Archiving). One of DIAnA’s unique characteristics is that it should be usable for the stakeholder groups of physicians and patients. We conducted the in-situ analysis with these stakeholders using the think-aloud method and semi-structured interviews. We anchored our interview guide in concepts of the Theory of Interactive Media Effects (TIME), which formulates UI features as causes and user psychology as effects. Based on the results, we derived 20 design requirements and developed nine design principles grounded in TIME for this class of XAI-based MDSS, either associated with the needs of physicians, patients, or both. Regarding evaluation, we first conducted semi-structured interviews with software developers to assess the reusability of our design principles. Afterward, we conducted a survey with user experience/interface designers. The evaluation uncovered that 77% of the participants would adopt the design principles, and 82% would recommend them to colleagues for a suitable project. The findings prove the reusability of the design principles and highlight a positive perception by potential implementers. Collapse

Abstract: A lack of measurement tools as well as a strategic and systematic approach for companies to achieve a high degree of human-centeredness is unknown in business and research discussions. This becomes an obstacle for companies when designing services, which are geared to improve humans’ lives. Based on the guidelines of Design Science Research (DSR), we address this gap by developing a human-centeredness Maturity Model (MM). The design of the MM is grounded in extant literature, semi-structured interviews as well as a focus group involving company representatives from the field of services, service design, and human-centered design. Results reveal a series of dimensions, capabilities, and stages indicating an evolutionary path towards maturity for companies to become truly human-centered. Becoming truly human-centered will allow firms to develop specific and targeted improvements initiatives, which could optimize resources deployment and thus, resulting in designing better services for the customers. Abstract: The acceptance and use of conversational user interfaces (CUIs) which are for example used in Conversational Agents (CAs) such as Alexa and Siri are crucially dependent on their usability—which is often lacking in practice according to user reviews. Referring to the usability norm DIN EN ISO 9241-11, a usable product, system or service can be used to achieve specified goals with high levels of effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction. However, in the case of conversational agents, the bidirectional interaction experience differs from the use of other input devices. We are proposing a conceptual framework for evaluating the design of CAs with regard to the interaction principles as per DIN EN ISO 9241-110. To increase the level of satisfaction in particular, we focus on the new principle of user engagement in order to ensure trust and welfare and specifically self-determination to ensure the success and positive user experience of CUIs. Abstract: Customers desire convenient, fast, and personalized service encounters. Hence, service companies deploy self-service technology for online customer service. However, as solutions based on Artificial Intelligence cannot reliably answer the full range of requests and the demands on service employees (SEs) in live chat interaction are high, Hybrid Intelligence Systems (HIS) provide great potential to overcome current pitfalls by combining the complementary strengths of artificial and human intelligence. To ensure optimal performance of this socio-technical ensemble, human-centered design approaches are needed to realize real-time augmentation of decision-making in chat-based service encounters. Following a Design Science Research approach, we generate theory-based design principles (DPs) and implement them in a web-based HIS prototype. We contribute to Hybrid Intelligence research with results showing that the DPs enable task mastery and decision efficiency and provide avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: While Universal Design principles have been adopted in many areas to ensure that products and services are usable for the broadest possible diversity of users, there is still an open area when it comes to the emergency management domain. This article aims at providing a systematic overview of the current state of the emerging research field of Universal Design of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for Emergency Management, and to highlight high-impact research opportunities to ensure that the increasing introduction of ICT in Emergency Management can contribute to removing barriers instead of adding more barriers, in particular for the elderly and people with disabilities. A systematic review on relevant literature on Universal Design, ICT and Emergency Management between 2008 and 2020 was employed using predefined frameworks, to answer the following questions: (1) Who are the target audiences (stakeholders) in research on Universal Design of ICT in Emergency Management in the different categories of Emergency Management ICT tools, and to what degree is Human-Centred Design and Universal Design taken into account? (2) What are the most important challenges and gaps in research on Universal Design of ICT in Emergency Management? We identify a set of gaps in the literature, indicating that there are some challenges where Universal Design is still limitedly addressed in technology development. Abstract: The pervasiveness of mobile technologies has led to the paradigm known as mHealth. Research has shown that mHealth is useful for self-management of chronic conditions but is plagued by usability issues. Design approaches such as Design Thinking advise the use of "personas" to represent real users and aid the design of user-centered and empathy-oriented mHealth applications. The current study develops three representative personas that could inform the development of a diabetes-management mobile application using about 1.35 million social media posts that represent about 40.81% of diabetes-related conversations on Twitter. This study demonstrates that social media could be useful in human-centered design approaches by analyzing posts that offer differing perspectives on diabetes care. Further, the study shows that the characteristics of social media-inspired personas can also influence the choice of behavior theory and techniques for mHealth applications. Collapse
