Abstract: The adequate consideration of resource interactions among IS projects is a challenging but important requirement within IS project portfolio selection. However, the literature does not mention any potential techniques for the identification and assessment of resource interactions. Moreover, the literature has so far neglected the question of the trade-off between time and effort invested in identifying and evaluating resource interactions caused by resource sharing among projects, compared to the benefits derived from this procedure. Hence, the paper’s contribution is twofold. First, a technique to support the identification and evaluation of potentially economically relevant resource interactions is suggested. Second, the paper proposes a decision model that allows to calculate a theoretical upper bound for the amount of effort that should be invested in improving estimates for identified interactions as part of the portfolio planning process. Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn this paper I present the architecture of system that can be used for real time exploration and management of large medical volumetric datasets. The new state of the art solution presented in this paper is an example of visual data management system. System prototype evaluation proved that it is possible to use low-powered (and cheap) up-to-date mobile devices with programmable GPUs as the remote interfaces for exploration of large volumetric medical data. The implementation was done with high-level programming language that enables portability between different hardware models. The lack of lossy compression enables to display high quality medical images visualizations without any simplifications and noises in frequency domain. The prototype of system is capable to remotely render and send to a client (for example cell phone or tablet) rendered data with frequency 30 fps with limited resolution during interaction. One second after the interaction is finished client machine receives full resolution image. The evaluation of the system was performed on volumetric computed tomography angiography image with approximate size 512 3 voxels. Collapse

Abstract: Many tourism destinations are currently pursuing green growth strategies but the development of appropriate policies is a complex task and, consequently, decision support technologies can be used to advantage here. The design and use of one such decision support system (DSS) is described in this paper. Key features of the system are that its design is underpinned both by a need to effectively manage the inherent complexity of the analysis domain and to allow iterative development with minimum impact on previous versions (i.e. to minimize ongoing maintenance costs). Abstract: There is a general need to understand better how context can affect evaluation, usage, and productivity of IT in research and practical settings. This paper investigates how perceived effectiveness of e-mail-style computermediated communication (CMC) differs between work and non-work contexts of use, and contrasts these differences with perceived effectiveness of face-to-face communication (FtFC). From the prior literature, we identified seven major activity domains that are prominent in CMC research. We developed a set of activity scales and corresponding measures of normative cognitive effort (NCE) for these domains and conducted an initial study to evaluate the overall instrument. In a second study, we measured perceived effectiveness of the communication mode within each activity domain among subjects who had communicated via e-mail and FtFC over a 15-week period. Some subjects communicated to support team-based software development (work context), and others communicated for personal interest (non-work context). We find communication technologies, activities, and contexts of use jointly determine perceived effectiveness; context influences perceived effectiveness primarily through interactions; and NCE successfully predicts perceived effectiveness based upon normative differences among activities. Our findings extend prior research in the area of task-technology fit to incorporate context effects, suggest that context is an important consideration in designing research, and introduce NCE as a method for predicting fit that can be applied even prior to system design. We conclude that the differential effects of work vs. non-work contexts are too large to be ignored, and we recommend an increased focus on context effects in CMC research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: The use of a well-defined process is a widely recognized approach to increasing quality and productivity in software development. Building software processes from scratch each time is expensive and risky. Therefore, they are often created by tailoring existing processes and standards. Process tailoring is a knowledge-intensive activity. This research explores the link between knowledge support and software process tailoring performance under different levels of tailoring task complexity. It theoretically develops and tests how the fit between knowledge (generalized and contextualized) and software tailoring task complexity influences process tailoring performance. Process tailoring performance is conceptualized in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. The results from an experiment and a protocol analysis show that contextualized knowledge outperforms generalized knowledge in improving tailoring performance, and that such improvement in performance is greater in complex process tailoring tasks when compared to simple tasks. Abstract: This empirical study discusses various aspects of global outsourcing (or offshoring) of IS projects. Using data from 57 paired onshoring and offshoring software projects, matched with respect to project size, beginning times and data quality and conducted in 17 nations over the period from 1991-2003, the research finds that offshored projects require more time to complete than do similar onshored projects. In comparing the technical differences between the matched projects, we found that offshored projects tend to be new client-server, Management Information System (versus TPS) applications, developed on Mid-range computers, using standard/traditional programming languages such as C/C++ and tools. Older languages such as COBOL do not get offshored that much. Collapse

Abstract: This study draws upon the technology acceptance model as the theoretical basis and empirical findings for a pragmatic explanation of key factors affecting personal computing acceptance in small firms. The study uses results from a survey of 358 users in small firms in New Zealand to test a structural model examining the hypothesized relationships among the following constructs: intraorganizational factors, extraorganizational factors, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and personal computing acceptance (i.e., system usage). The findings indicate that perceived ease of use is a dominant factor in explaining perceived usefulness and system usage, and that perceived usefulness has a strong effect on system usage. The results also indicate that exogenous variables influence both perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, particularly management support and external support. Inconsistent with prior research in large firms, relatively little support was found for the influence of both internal support and internal training. Impfications for the acceptance of personal computing and future research on personal computing acceptance in small firms are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: A unified programming environment is implemented on our DSS generator, called actDSS, which is a general platform for constructing intelligent specific systems. The architecture of the implemented unified programming is a hierarchical connection of a numerical solver and a non-numerical evaluator. The former produces an optimum solution of a problem and the latter evaluates the solution heuristically, controlling the total model that encompasses the former by modifying the constraint and the parameter value. A job assignment problem is used as a demonstration of the architecture, which is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem. In this paper, a general scheme of the unified programming is introduced. Its feasibility on actDSS is demonstrated and finally we discuss how the implementation was possible in the system. Collapse
