Abstract: There has been extensive research in Information Systems (IS) regarding the individual-level beliefs that are germane to technology usage. Theories like the technology acceptance model, user satisfaction, service quality, the diffusion of innovations theory, and others identify a wide variety of influential beliefs, such as those that target properties of the system itself (e.g., its features), the use of it (e.g., its ease of use), or other contextual aspects (e.g., the pressure from peers to use it). These theories have been invaluable for understanding one of the most fundamental phenomena of interest to IS researchers and practitioners: individuals’ adoption and use of information technology (IT). However, as valuable as these theories are, there has been growing criticism about the fact that several of their constituting belief constructs (e.g., usefulness or quality) do not lend themselves to prescriptions for actionable interventions, in particular those geared toward IT design. This is especially prob­ lematic when it comes to applying or extending them to the contexts of emerging technologies, where best design practices are still to be discovered and tested. We address this concern by developing a Broadness Reduction Methodology (BRM) that relies on Fishbein and Ajzen’s (1975) foundational work on the nature and formation of beliefs to help researchers develop belief-based theoretical models that are more relevant to IT practitioners. In order to illustrate the application of our methodology and demonstrate its validity, we apply it to the context of ebusiness. In doing so, we decompose the broad construct of supporting-service functionality, which has been shown to be a strong predictor of satisfaction and continued usage, into more specific constructs that are more amenable to actionable design recommendations. Abstract: Medical professionals hold highly specific knowledge and are known to have a strong professional identity. Advances in health technology especially by artificial intelligence, however, challenge the knowledge monopole of physicians and thereby threaten their professional identity. Although such identity threats constitute an important antecedent of resistance to technology, little is known about them. Specifically, prior work is inconclusive regarding the effects of threats towards personal and social identity aspects. This paper systematically conceptualizes and measures physicians' professional identity threat from information technologies. We derive five distinct dimensions from a broad literature review and conceptualize them as individual and group directed threats. Threats to expertise and status position are individual directed threats which diminish the social position of the individual within the professional group and foster individual level resistance. Threats to professional autonomy, professional influence and a core value of the medical profession, being a careprovider, are threats directed to the distinctiveness of the social group. The constructs and measures were validated in a survey design. This research contributes to the understanding of professional identity threats by conceptualizing a measurement for identity threats. Abstract: The success of information systems development (ISD) projects depends on the developers who deliver them. However, developers face many challenges in bringing an ISD project to successful completion. These projects are often large and highly complex, with volatile targets, creating a stressful environment for developers. Although prior literature has considered how technical ISD risk factors, such as project size, complexity, and target volatility, affect team- and project-level outcomes, their effects on developers have received limited attention. This gap in the literature is problematic for two reasons: (1) the interplay between developers and project characteristics are unaccounted for, resulting in an incomplete picture of ISD; and (2) developer stress has been shown to reduce team performance. In this research, we examine the role of empowering leadership in reducing developer stress in ISD. We develop a multilevel model of the effect of empowering leadership on the relationship between technical ISD risk factors and developers’ role perceptions, and explore the consequences for developers’ stress. The model was tested in a field study of 350 developers in 73 ISD teams from a large U.S.-based firm. Results showed that empowering leadership ameliorated the negative effects of project size and target volatility on role ambiguity as well as the negative effects of project size, complexity, and target volatility on role conflict and stress. We also found that empowering leadership reduced role ambiguity, role conflict, and stress directly, and that role ambiguity and role conflict increased stress. Project size, complexity, and target volatility were found to increase empowering leadership behaviors. We conclude that empowering leadership can be an effective means of helping developers cope with technical ISD risk factors and discuss the implications of our findings for research and practice. Abstract: We draw on eight different lab and field samples to delineate the effects of expressed humility on several important organizational outcomes, including performance, satisfaction, learning goal orientation, engagement, and turnover. We first review several literatures to define the construct of expressed humility, discuss its implications in social interactions, and distinguish expressed humility from related constructs. Using five different samples, Study 1 develops and validates an observer-report measure of expressed humility. Study 2 examines the strength of expressed humility predictions of individual performance and contextual performance (i.e., quality of team member contribution) relative to conscientiousness, global self-efficacy, and general mental ability. This study also reveals that with regard to individual performance, expressed humility may compensate for lower general mental ability. Study 3 reports insights from a large field sample that examines the relationship between leader-expressed humility and employee retention as mediated by job satisfaction and employee engagement as mediated by team learning orientation. Abstract: Common wisdom in the literature on virtual team is that rigid, explicit and formal forms of coordination are required for the integration of different expertise to take place, while tacit forms of coordination are difficult to establish and maintain. This study challenges this claim and evaluates the contribution of virtual team common knowledge – a tacit coordination mechanism – on virtual teams’ knowledge integration effectiveness. In an attempt to reconcile the different theoretical stances adopted in previous studies, we offer a new conceptualization for “virtual team common knowledge” and assess its structural and psychometric properties. A measure is developed and tested with 700 individuals spread across 102 virtual teams in the field. The evidence suggests that virtual team common knowledge is formed by common task knowledge, common expertise knowledge, common IT interaction knowledge, and common specialized knowledge. Virtual team common knowledge is also found to positively influence knowledge integration effectiveness. Collapse

Abstract: Developing new software quickly, successfully, and at low cost is critical in organizations. Ways of assessing the effectiveness of development teams has highlighted measures of factors, such as teamwork, group cohesiveness, and team integration, but the use of group potency theory (the collective belief of a group that it can be effective) is rare. In our study, we investigated antecedents of and consequences to group potency in software development project teams. By examining 53 software development project teams collected from small and medium-sized software firms in Turkey, we found, that team potency positively affected speed-to-market, development cost, and market success of the product. We also found that trust among project team members, past experiences of the members, and team empowerment had a positive impact on the team potency during the project. Managerial and theoretical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: This study develops and tests a model of relationships among computer-mediated communication systems (CMCS), group processes, and group outcomes. The group outcomes examined are agreement and acceptance. Agreement is the extent to which members of a problem-solving group hold similar views and solutions about the problem at the end of their task. Acceptance is the extent to which members of a problem-solving group acquiesce to the views and solutions of other members, while holding reservations about those views and solutions. The distinction between agreement and acceptance is important because members in agreement are more likely to support the implementation of their solution than are those who merely accept the solution. Based on a laboratory experiment, the authors find that socioemotional communication (both positive--showing friendliness and supportiveness--and negative---showing hostility and rejection) as well as task-oriented communication play important mediating roles between CMCS use and acceptance and agreement. The findings suggest ways to promote agreement through management intervention and CMCS design. In addition, their findings suggest some intriguing avenues for further research, such as the lack of symmetry between the effects of positive and negative socioemotional communication. Collapse
