Abstract: Multistores are data management systems that enable query processing across different and heterogeneous databases; besides the distribution of data, complexity factors like schema heterogeneity and data replication must be resolved through integration and data fusion activities. Our multistore solution relies on a dataspace to provide the user with an integrated view of the available data and enables the formulation and execution of GPSJ queries. In this paper, we propose a technique to optimize the execution of GPSJ queries by formulating and evaluating different execution plans on the multistore. In particular, we outline different strategies to carry out joins and data fusion by relying on different schema representations; then, a self-learning black-box cost model is used to estimate execution times and select the most efficient plan. The experiments assess the effectiveness of the cost model in choosing the best execution plan for the given queries and exploit multiple multistore benchmarks to investigate the factors that influence the performance of different plans. Abstract: In multiple attributes group decision making (MAGDM), how to generate a consensus-based solution that is satisfactory to most of decision makers, is always a critical research issue. This paper proposes a group consensus model for MAGDM based on interval belief distribution (IBD) and interval distributed preference relation (IDPR). The transformation function from IBD to IDPR is first designed to unify IBD and IDPR. Two principles are presented to guarantee the satisfaction of internal consistency before and after the transformation. Based on the unification of IBD and IDPR, a consensus reaching process is developed. In the process, the group consensus at the attribute, alternative and global levels based on IDPRs is first measured, and a feedback mechanism consisting of identification rules and suggestion rules is then designed to help accelerate the convergence of group consensus. With the developed group consensus model, a consensus-based solution to the MAGDM problems with IBDs and IDPRs is generated. Finally, the proposed model is applied to a sustainable supplier selection problem of automobile enterprise in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China to demonstrate its correctness and effectiveness. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations replace their legacy systems for technical, economic, and operational reasons. Replacement is a risky proposition, as high levels of technical and social inertia make these systems hard to withdraw. Failure to fully replace systems results in complex system architectures involving manifold hidden dependencies that carry technical debt. To understand how a process for replacing a complex legacy system unfolds and accumulates technical debt, we conducted an explanatory case study at a local manufacturing site that had struggled to replace its mission-critical legacy systems as part of the larger global company’s commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) system implementation. We approach the replacement as a sociotechnical change and leverage the punctuated sociotechnical information system change model in combination with the design-moves framework to analyze how the site balanced creating digital options, countering social inertia, and managing (architectural) technical debt. The findings generalize to a two-level (local/global) system-dynamics model delineating how replacing a deeply entrenched mission-critical system generates positive and negative feedback loops within and between social and technical changes at local and global levels. The loops, unless addressed, accrue technical debt that hinders legacy system discontinuance and gradually locks the organization into a debt-constrained state. The model helps managers anticipate challenges that accompany replacing highly entrenched systems and formulate effective strategies to address them. Collapse

Abstract: Individuality matters. While information technology (IT) is important, more critical for the success of IS functions in an organization are its people, their values, attitudes, norms, and behavior. There are differences among IT professionals, not only at the organizational level, but also at the global level. Using data collected from more than 10,000 IT employees in 37 countries under the World IT Project, this study examines some fundamental issues of IT workers from a global perspective. While there are differences, we find that almost universally, nine individual issues are important across many countries, and they are interrelated in a similar manner. IT employees in some countries maintain stronger social bonds among themselves than those in others, which provide them with the necessary social capital to utilize in times of high work exhaustion, environmental dynamism and insecurity, as well as their efforts to change jobs. In difficult situations, the professional self-efficacy of the workers secures them. A significant number of IT employees feel that excessive work overload upsets the balance between their lives at home and workplace demands. Nevertheless, an intellectually stimulating and well-balanced work environment ensures job satisfaction for a significant number of IT employees in many countries. Collapse

Abstract: Platform boundary resources are prominent digital strategy tools for companies to disclose business assets to partners and consumers. However, the platform boundary resources of API ecosystems are dependent on API usage and characteristics as well as the social environment around them. This study focuses on the global API ecosystem guided by two assumptions: 1) geographic proximity is distorted, and the global API ecosystem is decentralized in a digitally connected world, and 2) open co-innovation is somewhat prone to geographic nearness and centralized. A data-driven network analysis was utilized to depict the global and regional geolocation of more than 22,000 APIs and 6,000 mashups. First, the global locations of API providers were examined. Next, the connectivity of API mashups at global and regional levels was studied. The findings suggest that APIs are distributed globally, and the API ecosystem has moved from emerging to mature; however, the distribution is skewed towards entrepreneurial regions in North America. Finally, the theoretical and managerial implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Online collaboration communities are increasingly taking on new roles beyond knowledge creation and exchange, especially the role of a skill-signaling channel for career-motivated community members. This paper examines the contingency effects of job-market conditions for career-motivated knowledge contributions in online collaboration communities. From the data of individual-level activities in a computer programming-related online Q&A community (Stack Overflow), merged with job-market data for software developers, we find robust evidence of a positive association between community members' career motivations and their knowledge contributions. More importantly, we find that this positive relationship is strengthened by job-market conditions: the number of vacancies in the job market, the expected salaries from these jobs, and the transparency in the flow of careerrelated information between the community and external recruiters. We contribute to the motivation literature in online collaboration communities by identifying and substantiating the role of contextual factors in mobilizing members' career motivation. Our study thus offers novel insight into how career motivation can be effectively utilized to motivate contributors in these communities. Our findings also point to a possible paradigm change by characterizing online collaboration communities as emerging institutions for career motivation and skill signaling. Collapse

Abstract: What drives the emergence of enterprise social media (ESM) networks? This question cannot be fully answered without studying the scattered body of knowledge. The current research in progress paper addresses this question by means of a preliminary literature review. Precisely, it synthesizes 34 literature findings into a preliminary literature review, which will be further refined and augmented by a research agenda in the future steps. The main theoretical contribution of this paper is to describe 21 antecedents that drive ESM network emergence. In practice, knowledge about these emergence antecedents can be used for various application cases. Examples include developing ESM recommender systems, creating ESM network simulation models, and planning and conducting organizational interventions to optimize ESM networks. Collapse

Abstract: COVID-19 created a great deal of personal, social, and economic anxiety in the USA and across the globe and exposed the inadequacy of traditional medical systems in handling large-scale emergencies. While telemedicine and virtual visits have become popular as a result, they end once a visit is over, hence lacking data persistence and continuity in caring for patients. Using the design science research approach with support from the theory of affordances, this paper proposes the design of a medical system (called wepital) in which patients receive care through their real avatars, enabling hospitals and other medical centers to provide immediate care that can continue for as long as a patient needs it. Real avatars are digital representations of patients that embody their real-time vital signs and health information. We have created a functional prototype to demonstrate how the proposed design can work. To assess the usability of the design, we have used the prototype in an experiment to provide medical advice to patient volunteers. Based on a theory-based conceptual model, we collected survey data after the experiment to identify factors contributing to the success of such a system, as measured by patient satisfaction. We report the factors that significantly contribute to the patients’ satisfaction. As part of the application and policy implications of our work, we propose a nationwide system that could supplement and expand the capacity of medical systems at the national or even global level. Abstract: Extracting typical career paths from largescale and unstructured talent profiles has re cently attracted increasing research attention. However, various challenges arise in effec tively analyzing selfreported career records. Inspired by recent advances in neural net works and embedding models, we develop a novel career path clustering approach with two major components. First, we formulate an embedded Markov framework to learn job embeddings from longitudinal career records and further use them to compute dynamic embeddings of career paths. Second, to cope with heterogeneous career path clusters, we estimate a mixture of Markov models to optimize clusterwise job embeddings with a prior embedded space shared by multiple clusters. We conduct extensive experiments with our framework to investigate its algorithmic performance and extract meaningful patterns of career paths in the information technology (IT) industry. The results show that our ap proach can naturally discover distinct career path clusters and reveal valuable insights. Collapse

Abstract: The study examines the mediating role of human resource (HR) quality on ICT adoption effects on corporate governance. Extant information systems research has not examined the dual effect of ICT adoption and HR quality on corporate governance at the global level. Furthermore, the mediating role of HR quality on corporate governance has not been widely explored. To address this, we rely on secondary data from 140 countries and Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling and the Technology-Organization-Environment framework as the theory to examine these effects. The findings show that whilst the direct effects of ICT adoption on HR quality is positive, it is not so on corporate governance. Furthermore, the direct effects of HR quality on corporate governance and the mediating role of HR quality on ICT adoption effects on corporate governance were found to be positive. Our study provides more insight and proffers some implications for research, practice, and policy. Collapse
