Abstract: In recent years, deep learning methods have become increasingly capable of generating near photorealistic pictures and humanlike text up to the point that humans can no longer recognize what is realand what is AI-generated. Concerningly, there is evidence that some of these methods have already been adopted to produce fake social media profiles and content. We hypothesize that these advances have made detecting generated fake social media content in the feed extremely difficult, if not impossible, for the average user of social media. This paper presents the results of an experiment where 375 participants attempted to label real and generated profiles and posts in a simulated social media feed. The results support our hypothesis and suggest that even fully-generated fake profiles with posts written by an advanced text generator are difficult for humans to identify. Collapse

Abstract: Structured and persuasive writing is essential for effective communication, convincing readers of argument validity, and inspiring action. However, studies indicate a decline in students' proficiency in this area. This decline poses challenges in disciplines like law, where success relies on structured and persuasive writing skills. To address these issues, we present the results of our design science research project to develop an AI-based learning system that helps students learn legal writing. Our results from two different experiments with 104 students demonstrate the usefulness of our AI-based learning system to support law students independent of a human tutor, location, and time. Apart from furnishing our integrated software artifact, we also document our assessed design knowledge in the form of a design theory. This marks the first step toward a nascent design theory for the development of AI-based learning systems for legal writing. Collapse

Abstract: With increasing adoption of AI social chatbots, especially during the pandemic-related lockdowns, when people lack social companionship, there emerges a need for in-depth understanding and theorizing of relationship formation with digital conversational agents. Following the grounded theory approach, we analyzed in-depth interview transcripts obtained from 14 existing users of AI companion chatbot Replika. The emerging themes were interpreted through the lens of the attachment theory. Our results show that under conditions of distress and lack of human companionship, individuals can develop an attachment to social chatbots if they perceive the chatbots’ responses to offer emotional support, encouragement, and psychological security. These findings suggest that social chatbots can be used for mental health and therapeutic purposes but have the potential to cause addiction and harm real-life intimate relationships. Collapse

Abstract: Online hate speech constitutes a universal IS phenomenon. While past research has started to define, conceptualize, and delineate hate speech, it has barely attempted to propose how ITin the form of AI applicationscan help tackle hate speech on social media platforms. Here, this research-in-progress paper aims to contribute. To this end, we first integrate definitions and concepts to build a detailed understanding of hate speech. Second, we elaborate on the regulatory context and its geographical boundaries for the development of AI systems that tackle hate speech. Third, in a yet to be completed phase of the project, we build and evaluate an AI system to help tackling hate speech in a predefined setting.
