Abstract: This paper advances the understanding of the information systems (IS) discipline by developing a multidimensional conceptualization of the discipline’s intellectual diversity. It also provides an empirical analysis of the intellectual diversity exhibited by the full set of articles published in Information Systems Research (ISR) over the last 10 years. We categorize IS intellectual diversity into four intellectual dimensions of IS research—namely, domain-topic, level of phenomenon, type of contribution, and method—and highlight differences along these dimensions. We develop a framework for evaluating the ebb and flow of the topics, methods, and contributions of IS scholarship over time. Regarding ISR specifically, our study offers a glimpse of the IS intellectual diversity found in the research topics, methods, and contributions of papers published during 2012–2021. Our analysis shows a preponderance of econometric and modeling studies. It also shows that there is a substantial variety of topics, research questions, and methods. Based on these conceptual and empirical insights, we identify implications for intellectual diversity and inclusion in the broader IS discipline. Abstract: Recent developments in data-centric technologies (e.g., big data, Internet of Things, cloud computing) have given rise to the data-centric models, such as servitization. Servitization here refers to firms selling a product as a service instead of selling product ownership, which has been viewed as a green business model that can benefit the environment. Despite the potential environmental superiority of servitization, previous studies and empirical observations have shown that the servitization model may generate lower profits than the conventional product sales model, which poses challenges for firms to choose their business models. However, the existing literature has not considered the role of data-centric technologies that are increasingly embedded in the servitization model, in which firms can co-create value with consumers by leveraging product usage data to improve service offerings. In this study, we build an analytical model to scrutinize the economic and environmental performance of the data-centric servitization model compared to the product model. We find that the data-centric servitization model is more profitable than the product model only when a firm's service improvement capability is relatively high. Unfortunately, a high service improvement capability may exacerbate the negative environmental impact, resulting in the servitization model being less environmentally friendly than the product model. We discuss the circumstances under which using the servitization model can yield win-win outcomes in terms of profitability and environmental impact. The findings can help managers and policymakers reconcile the tension between firm profitability and environmental damage and make judicious decisions on business model choices and the application of emerging data-centric technologies. Abstract: Upstream firms in supply chains have shown a growing interest in deploying consumer scanning technology (CST), which relies on consumers scanning the purchased products with their mobile devices, as a novel alternative to conventional interorganizational information technology (IOIT) to learn downstream consumer demand information. However, there is limited understanding in the literature on (i) how CST helps improve upstream firms’ performances and (ii) whether CST will replace IOIT. This paper develops a theoretical model to examine the value of CST to a supplier that bypasses a retailer and employs CST to directly collect scan information from consumers who are incentivized with a reward for their scanning effort. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that CST offers both operational and strategic value to the supplier. On the operational level, recognizing that the scan information gathered by CST is a censored version of the realized demand, we develop a simple and effective approach for the supplier to learn the realized demand from the censored scan information. We then investigate the learning efficiency of our approach, the optimal reward decisions, and the savings in the supplier’s inventory overage and underage costs arising from CST. On the strategic level, we examine the choice of IOIT and CST within supply chains in equilibrium. Contrary to the conventional view, we find that the availability of CST may expand (instead of suppress) the use of IOIT within supply chains. Using an extensive simulation analysis based on real-world data from a manufacturer that has implemented a CST program, we show that the value of CST to a manufacturer can be substantial and provide insights into how market conditions affect the value. Abstract: Despite the importance of investing in information technology, research on business value of information technology (BVIT) shows contradictory results, raising questions about the reasons for divergence. Kohli and Devaraj (2003) provided valuable insights into this issue based on a meta-analysis of 66 BVIT studies. This paper extends Kohli and Devaraj by examining the influences on BVIT through a meta-analysis of 303 studies published between 1990 and 2013. We found that BVIT increases when the study does not consider IT investment, does not use profitability measure of value, and employs primary data sources, fewer IT-related antecedents, and larger sample size. Considerations of IT alignment, IT adoption and use, and interorganizational IT strengthen the relationship between IT investment on BVIT, whereas the focus on environmental theories dampens the same relationship. However, the use of productivity measures of value, the number of dependent variables, the economic region, the consideration of IT assets and IT infrastructure or capability, and the consideration of IT sophistication do not affect BVIT. Finally, BVIT increases over time with IT progress. Implications for future research and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Although the use of real options for valuation of information technology (IT) investments has been documented, little research has been conducted to examine its relevance for valuing and prioritizing a portfolio of projects. Complexities of IT projects along with the effect of project interdependencies raise several challenges in applying real options for prioritization of IT investments. We examine a large U.S.-based energy utility firm in a deregulated environment that is considering investment in a portfolio of 31 projects to provide a range of Internet-enabled energy services to customers. Using real data on expected project benefits and costs for different competitive scenarios, we develop a nested options model that extends prior research by incorporating the impact of project interdependencies to calculate the option value of all projects. Our nested options model provides a better understanding of project interdependencies on valuation and prioritization decisions, and provides insights into the business value of IT infrastructure projects that provide the managerial flexibility to launch future projects. We present a real options portfolio optimization algorithm for dynamic multiperiod portfolio optimization by incorporating the project values based on real options analysis in a portfolio management model with budget constraints. Abstract: The complexity of a firm's strategy affects both the ease with which the firm can replicate the strategy in a new setting and the ease with which rivals can imitate it. Simple strategies are as readily imitated as replicated, and highly intricate strategies resist imitation and replication equally. At moderate levels of complexity, however, a wedge develops between the ease of replication and the difficulty of imitation, so long as the replicator has better information than the imitator about the original success. An agent-based simulation model clarifies the structural reasons that this is so. The model also shows how the wedge-maximizing level of complexity varies with the replicator's informational edge over the imitator. The results help to pinpoint situations in which strategies requiring replication are likely to defy imitation and generate sustained competitive advantage. More generally, the analysis sheds light on the value of superior but imperfect information about good solutions to hard problems, Finally, the results suggest that a pattern long observed by organization scholars-that "loosely coupled organizations" are especially effective competitors may arise for a very different reason than is normally posited.
