Abstract: Within the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), we organize for the sixth time a mini-track on trust and information technologies. This year, the mini-track highlights distrust along with trust. Through the presentation of six papers and an open discussion, the mini-track participants will have another round of lively debate that involves a variety of modern day information technologies in contexts such as autonomous vehicles and blockchain environments, addressing topics such as (dis)trust and technology adaption, technostress, datafication, and trust transfer. Abstract: The recent emergence of financial technology (fintech) innovations offers a promising resolution to financial exclusion via mechanisms that empower financially underprivileged individuals to gain access rights in the traditional financial industry. However, academic research has provided little guidance on how to strategize the IT-enabled empowerment mechanisms for fintech innovations to realize both business success and financial inclusion. In this study, we conduct an in-depth revelatory case study on a novel Chinese fintech innovation, Yu’E Bao, a bellwether for the dramatic transformation of China’s financial industry through the successful empowerment of a large population of financially underprivileged individuals (i.e., “grassroots consumers,” translated from “cao gen” in Chinese). Through our systematic qualitative analysis of news articles collected since the product launch, we derive a two-stage theoretical model, examined through the lens of empowerment, and unravel the mechanisms underlying fintech innovation’s empowerment process on grassroots investment consumers. Most importantly, we elucidate a duality of empowerment through which the catalyst for Yu’E Bao’s success becomes an impediment to Yu’E Bao’s further development. Our study contributes to the literature on information technology-enabled empowerment, empowerment, and fintech. We also elucidate critical implications for various stakeholders, such as governments, policy makers, fintech practitioners, and product designers. Collapse

Abstract: Although societies are becoming increasingly secularized, religion continues to play an important role worldwide. However, few studies have focused on how religion affects the entrepreneurial emergence novel markets. To address this gap, I examine the impact of Islam, as a decentralized belief system, on entrepreneurship in the context of developing Islamic investment fund markets across countries. I focus on religious diversity within Islam as an instance of intrainstitutional complexity and analyze a country-level panel dataset of Islamic investment funds in addition to complementary qualitative data. Intriguingly, I find that religious diversity within Islam plays a paradoxical role: it promotes the entrepreneurial supply of Islamic investment funds in a country, but it also reduces the investor demand for these funds. This complex effect is moderated by interinstitutional forces: the market logic positively moderates the effect on supply dynamics, whereas the state logic negatively moderates the effect on supply and positively that on demand. This study contributes to the research on religion and market emergence, institutional complexity, and Islamic finance. Collapse

Abstract: A socially responsible investment portfolio takes into consideration the environmental, social and governance aspects of companies. It has become an emerging topic for both financial investors and researchers recently. Traditional investment and portfolio theories, which are used for the optimization of financial investment portfolios, are inadequate for decision-making and the construction of an optimized socially responsible investment portfolio. In response to this problem, we introduced a Deep Responsible Investment Portfolio (DRIP) model that contains a Multivariate Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory neural network, to predict stock returns for the construction of a socially responsible investment portfolio. The deep reinforcement learning technique was adapted to retrain neural networks and rebalance the portfolio periodically. Our empirical data revealed that the DRIP framework could achieve competitive financial performance and better social impact compared to traditional portfolio models, sustainable indexes and funds. Abstract: How do firms benefit from employees with transferable skills? The prevailing view is that labor market frictions that impede employee mobility or strategies that constrain skill transferability are the primary instruments for firms to appropriate value from human capital. The empirical evidence, however, suggests that employees continue to be mobile, and firms pay premiums to attract and retain employees with transferable skills. To reconcile theory with data, we use data from the mutual fund industry, where it is widely documented that active fund managers appropriate more value than they generate. We develop a theory of positive externalities stemming from transferable human capital that we argue accrue mostly to the firm, and provide evidence of such externalities in the mutual fund context. Empirically, we decompose the skills of mutual fund managers into task- and firm-specific components and argue that managers with task-specific skills generate positive externalities at the firm level that are not reflected in their performance measured at the fund level. We advance and test empirical hypotheses on the existence of these positive unmeasured externalities by examining whether managers with task-specific skills are more likely to be associated with activities such as mentoring, increased risk taking, and generating spillovers at the firm level. Our results show that managers with task-specific skills are indeed associated with greater positive externalities, compared with managers with firm-specific skills. Abstract: We investigate contingent effects of digitalized B2B transactions (DBT), digitalized customer access (DCA), and digitalized core services (DCS), on performance of service firms. We theorize positive moderation effects of DBT and DCA on the relationship between DCS and performance. We also argue that advertising investment complements the moderating role of DCA on the relationship between DCS and firm performance. Further, we posit that participation in an inter-organizational network enhances the moderating role of DBT on the relationship between DCS and performance. Our empirical analysis of archival data from annual reports and publicly available information of 7,000 credit unions across the United States over a nine-year period largely supports our theoretical model. An important, albeit counter-intuitive finding, is that DCA has a negative moderating effect on the DCS-performance relationship. Overall, we uncover contingencies in the link between digitalization of services and firm performance, and demonstrate how investment strategies influence these relationships. Collapse

Abstract: Our paper examines how field structures moderate the effect of the business press on organizational outcomes. Prior research suggests that the business press shapes organizational outcomes, but the question of how these effects depend on organizations' positions in a field has attracted limited attention. We address this theoretical limitation in an analysis of how mutual funds in Sweden were affected by periods when the business press increased its negative coverage of mutual fund fees. First, we expect that negative coverage influences the way customers evaluate mutual funds. Second, banks have long occupied a dominant position in this market, and we thus expect banks to be less affected by the negative coverage of fees than other mutual fund managers. We find support for our argument in a longitudinal quantitative analysis of financial net flows into mutual funds. The findings indicate the value of contextualizing media effects and considering how field positions moderate the effects of cultural processes. Collapse

Abstract: Knowledge--which is closely linked to firm innovativeness--is accessed across organizational boundaries and geographic space via networks operating at different levels of analysis. However, we know tantalizingly little about the comparative influence of geography on knowledge flow across organizational boundaries over different types of ties, despite warnings that research needs to account for the geographic context of ties to fully understand causal relationships. Using a combination of primary and secondary data on 77 Canadian mutual fund companies, we find that institutional-level ties are valuable in knowledge transmission only when such ties are geographically proximate. Organization-level ties fail to act as transmitters of knowledge, regardless of geographic location. Interestingly, we find that geographically distant individual-level friendship ties are superior conduits for knowledge flow, which suggests they span "geographic holes.". Collapse

An experiment was conducted in which teams made resource allocation decisions while physically dispersed and supported with a shared virtual work surface (What You See Is What I See - WYSIWIS). The task required teams to recognize patterns and collaborate to allocate their resources appropriately. The experiment explores the use of a cognitively aligned tool designed to minimize the cognitive effort required to for teams to recognize and share recognized patterns. Dependent measures included outcome quality, resource allocation time, and resource allocation ordering. All teams received significant financial rewards in direct proportion to their outcome quality. Teams supported with the “chunk”pattern-sharing tool had highest outcome quality. Collapse

Abstract: This paper presents results of exploratory research into the question of whether the distribution of investment funds via the Internet in Europe is being deterred by regulatory barriers. The paper examines the theoretical underpinnings behind financial services regulation and then asks if current regulation in place within the European Union and its Member States is consistent with this theory or indeed if regulation is acting as a barrier. Using both primary data and secondary sources, this exploratory study argues that European fund management firms face different regulatory obstacles, often the result of protectionism and the inconsistent application of financial regulations, in different EU countries. As a result, they are unable to reap the benefits that electronic commerce should bring in an industry that appears highly suited for it. Collapse
