Abstract: Social movements are recognized as significant agents of change in modern societies. Their influence is increasingly channeled through social media platforms to mobilize support and direct collective action toward targeted organizations. However, targeted organizations also resort to social media channels to counter the actions of social movements that are directed at them. There is little research on organizations' responses to movement's actions on social media. This study endeavors to explore the dynamics of interactions between social movement activists and their target organizations by utilizing narrative network analysis. Drawing on framing theory, this research endeavors to elucidate how social movement actors employ various frames. Specifically, we examine the Twitter accounts of various Canadian banks and activists targeting them for their investments in fossil fuels. We analyze the narrative networks and counter-networks to develop a theoretical understanding of how the social media interactions between activists and target organizations evolve over time. Abstract: The implementation of information systems (IS) is a complex process that requires appropriate governance to ensure that the technical capabilities of the new IS align with organizational goals. However, existing literature lacks insight into how this alignment occurs when IS are designed as openended, weakly structured systems that offer generic functions, rather than for a singular purpose. To address this gap, this study examines the implementation of a low-code AI platform in eight large companies and the governance practices they employed to align the system's capabilities with their organizational goals. The findings highlight the importance of balanced governance practices that support and constrain the generative capacity of weakly structured IS, while enabling continuous interdependent development of organizational and technical capabilities throughout implementation. This study contributes to IS literature by responding to calls to examine challenges of implementing weakly structured IS and offering practical recommendations for implementation teams and system vendors. Abstract: Tipping, as a new model of content monetization, is being adopted widely. Leveraging the policy changes in one of the largest social media platforms, we examined when and how tip-based content monetization incentives work. We adopt framing theory to explain different attitudes toward content monetization incentives between status-framed and benefit-framed users. Our results show that a hierarchical content monetization program decreases status-framed users’ content contribution, whereas a general accessible content monetization program will effectively motivate the content supply of all users. Moreover, we identify the underlying mechanisms for heterogeneous content monetization effects by unbinding signaling and rewarding effects of tipping feature. Collapse

Abstract: The discontinuance of volitional IS (i.e., information systems adopted, used and discontinued at will) has recently attracted remarkable attention from academics and practitioners alike. However, most research to date has been ahistorical. Ignoring the temporal progression can be problematic when the phenomenon under investigation is dynamic and evolving. To balance this, we adopt a stage modelling approach to understand the process ending with the technology use being discontinued by users of a popular crowdsourcing platform. Two questions guided our investigation: (1) Why do users discontinue using an IS they have volitionally adopted and used? (2) How does IS discontinuance occur over time in such context? We develop a stage model demonstrating that five stages are critical in understanding IS discontinuance: IS framing, goal pursuit, frame disruption, dormancy and quitting, after which possible switching denotes a new cycle. Furthermore, we identify two frames that help us understand why different users interpret and evaluate the technology differently – namely, the gain frame and the hedonic frame. On one hand, a gain frame is linked to the goal of improving one's resources and thus directs the user's attention to the technology's instrumental value. On the other hand, a hedonic frame is linked to the goal of having fun and thus directs the user's attention to the technology's enjoyment value. But, most importantly, we show that the technology's use lifecycle as a whole from initial use to discontinuance is shaped and guided by the user's dominant frame. Our insights elicit a number of important theoretical and practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: This study investigates how influencer videos polarize the audience's opinions on promoted products. Based on opinion polarization literature and framing theory, we propose that influencer video content polarizes the audience's opinions towards products, and video type negatively moderates the polarizing effect of video content. We collected information about videos posted by tech influencers on YouTube and applied sentiment analysis and regression analysis to test the related hypotheses. The findings show that comparative advertising video relieves opinion polarization. This study contributes to the IS field from several perspectives: (1) highlights the importance of context in investigating polarization; (2) points out that video content attributes significantly influence viewer engagement and opinion. (3) reveals that content design manipulates the polarizing effects of influencer content; (4) offers a solution to depolarize audience opinions towards products, enriching our understanding of the impact of social media on public opinion polarization and guiding organizations in brand management. Abstract: This research aims to explore news media reporting practices of cybercrime, specifically focusing on victim organizations. Drawing on the media framing theory, the intention of this study is to investigate frames that news media employs when reporting cybercrime. A basic premise of this work is that victims of cybercrime, organizations in particular, are reluctant to share information about cyber-attacks due to fear of being negatively represented by news media. This, in turn, discourages victims to be forthcoming with the information about attacks, weakening our defences against cybercrime. The ultimate purpose of this two-phased research is to develop a model for accurate cybercrime reporting for news media. In the first phase, victims of cybercrime (organizations) were interviewed to examine their perceptions about news media reporting of cyber incidents. The second phase will focus on examining frames that media outlets use to depict organizations that became victims of cybercrime. Collapse

Abstract: Blockchain technology promises disruptive change to industry and society. Although academic researchers and practitioners have engaged with blockchain for years, actual adoption rates of this technology significantly lag predictions. This paper explores present barriers to blockchain adoption in an industry for which blockchain might be assumed to offer an obvious solution to a globally distributed challenge: the integration of carbon markets. Using technological framing theory as a focusing lens, we investigate the challenges of blockchain adoption in China’s developing carbon markets from three expert groups: carbon market experts with blockchain knowledge only, carbon market experts with blockchain projects, and IT experts in carbon markets. Our findings suggest that different expert groups present distinctive and incongruent framing challenges where technical challenges are not the most significant. In exploring this we make contributions to the introduction of a socio-technical perspective in blockchain adoption research and provide practical suggestions to policymakers and practitioners. Abstract: Prosocial crowdfunding was originally conceived as a financial mechanism to assist vulnerable unbanked populations, typically excluded from formal financial markets. It subsequently grew into a billiondollar scheme in a multi-billion-dollar crowdfunding industry. However, recent evidence claims prosocial crowdfunding may be shifting away from its goal to support the poor and underserved. Drawing on a composite social responsibility and framing theory framework, we examine the role that vulnerability plays in successfully raising funds in a prosocial crowdfunding context. We conduct multilevel logistic regressions on a sample of microloans allocated to 105,727 ventures in 64 countries. Our results indicate that applying for funds through a field partner which caters to vulnerable populations may in fact have a negative effect on the entrepreneur’s request to be fully funded. Notwithstanding, framing the entrepreneur as being female or rural as key characteristics of individual vulnerability increases the project’s likelihood to be fully funded. Collapse
