Abstract: Increasing the social category diversity of work teams is top of mind for many organizations. However, such efforts may not always be sufficiently resourced, given the numerous resource demands facing organizations. In this paper, we offer a novel take on the relationship between social category diversity and team performance, seeking to understand the role resources may play in both altering and explaining the performance dynamics of diverse teams. Specifically, our resource framework explains how the effects of social category diversity on team performance can be explained by intrateam resource cognitions and behaviors and are dependent on team resource availability. We propose that in the face of scarcity in a focal resource (i.e., budget), diverse (but not homogenous) teams generalize this scarcity perception to fear that all resources (i.e., staff, time, etc.) are scarce, prompting performance-detracting power struggles over resources within the team. We find support for our model in three multimethod team-level studies, including two laboratory studies of interacting teams and a field study of work teams in research and development firms. Our resource framework provides a new lens to study the success or failure of diverse teams by illuminating a previously overlooked danger in diverse teams (negative resource cognitions (scarcity spillover bias) and behaviors (intrateam power struggles)), which offers enhanced explanatory power over prior explanations. This resource framework for the study of team diversity also yields insight into how to remove the roadblocks that may occur in diverse teams, highlighting the necessity of resource sufficiency for the success of diverse teams. Abstract: Companies with global operations should consider the culture of their target country in order to be internationally successful despite of globalization. Every marketing strategy should be adapted to the target country and its local cultural background. Companies which offer their products only through online channels need to pay special attention to the design of their websites. Therefore, we analyze in this study the design of United States and German landing pages in the online fitness industry and whether or not changes can improve the conversion rate of a landing page. To answer these questions, we develop and evaluate a culture specific landing page framework with a design science approach. The evaluation shows optimization potential of landing pages for the test elements “free content” and “promotional pictures”. Hence, the framework can be used to identify improvement potential for culture specific landing pages, but needs to be validated in other areas, too. Collapse

Abstract: Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is a new text mining approach that is increasingly being adopted by IS scholars. In this paper, we provide an overview of various research contexts in which IS and other business scholars have applied this research method. We first identity the diverse body of scholarly and field-based contexts in which LSA has been applied. Next, we propose an empirical analysis of published research on healthcare information technology (HIT) research, to identify different themes in the IS literature from 1990 to the present date. Our empirical analysis will identify key research trends in IS journals topics for three time periods, based on an analysis of papers published in 15 leading IS journals. In addition to providing more awareness of this research approach, we seek to identify important trends in healthcare IT research over times. Collapse

Abstract: Previously, personalized service was provided by traditional channel. Now, they are available online by using web channel. Some unique features of a web channel make it different from a traditional channel. Previous research has studied the competition between a web channel and a traditional channel from various angles. In this paper, we develop a model to examine the impact of switching costs and customer heterogeneity on the competition between an online fitness service provider and a brick-and-mortar fitness club which are all forward looking. Fitness service is used for illustration purpose. Our model can be generalized to all types of the personalized service. Contrary to previous research, switching costs in our model are asymmetric between two firms. We present a two-period game based on the well-established Hotelling model of the market. In order to maximize their profits, both the online fitness service provider and the fitness club offer different prices to their own customers and customers who switch from its rival. The results show that, in the case that firms are forward looking but customers are myopic, no matter it is the online firm or the traditional firm, if it has marginal cost advantage, then the impact of switching cost can be neglected, and the firm with marginal cost advantage should always take the “pay to switch” strategy in order to maximize its total profit. Otherwise, if marginal cost advantage does not exist, firms have to choose their pricing strategy based on their marginal costs and switching costs. In the case that both the firms and customers are forward looking, the switching costs do play a role in the firm’s decision making. The optimal pricing strategies vary depending on both the switching costs and marginal costs. Collapse

Abstract: There is now a growing global leisure industry that includes health, fitness, and sports clubs. Faced with increasing competition, organizations within this sector have turned to information systems (IS) as a means of obtaining competitive advantage. However, complaining of time shortages, lack of expertise, and a shortfall of perceived benefits, management often find conducting post-implementation evaluations of their IS investments problematic. Importance-performance (I–P) maps have been successfully applied in the marketing field for many years where they have been shown to be a simple and effective management tool. However, there is little reported use of I–P maps in the IS field, and this paper puts forward a case for using them in the diagnosis of IS success. This is illustrated in conjunction with an extension of DeLone and McLean’s IS success typology for the UK health club industry. Collapse
