Abstract: This paper reports the preliminary findings of a netnographic case study that investigates how online brand defending and attacking behaviours are influenced by ideological polarisation. Mirror, a Cantopop group from Hong Kong that pro-Beijing Internet users have targeted, has been selected as the subject of this study. Our preliminary findings show that online brand defending and attacking behaviours for or against a brand may be explained by a modified, looped Belief-Action-Outcome (BAO) framework under ideological polarisation, which complements existing research on Internet users' impact on brand management and sheds light on politically-driven online brand-attacking behaviours. Results also show that brand-attacking behaviours would further polarise, and thus de-stabilise society. We plan to collect and incorporate further data for more in-depth analyses for building a holistic model to explain the relationships of ideological polarisation on brand defending and attacking behaviours, and their impacts on business and organisation strategies. Abstract: Although pervasive spread of misinformation on social media platforms has become a pressing challenge, existing platform interventions have shown limited success in curbing its dissemination. In this study, we propose a stance-aware graph neural network (stance-aware GNN) that leverages users' stances to proactively predict misinformation spread. As different user stances can form unique echo chambers, we customize four information passing paths in stance-aware GNN, while the trainable attention weights provide explainability by highlighting each structure's importance. Evaluated on a realworld dataset, stance-aware GNN outperforms benchmarks by 32.65% and exceeds advanced GNNs without user stance by over 4.69%. Furthermore, the attention weights indicate that users' opposition stances have a higher impact on their neighbors' behaviors than supportive ones, which function as social correction to halt misinformation propagation. Overall, our study provides an effective predictive model for platforms to combat misinformation, and highlights the impact of user stances in the misinformation propagation. Collapse

Abstract: Doxing, a form of adversarial online behavior, is the aggregation and release of an individual's personal information with malicious intent. It is increasingly used to intimidate, punish, or silence individuals. Such weaponization of personal information can result in extreme and intertwined cyber harassment and physical threats, significantly affecting doxees' participation in both cyber and physical communities. While prior research has examined the underlying motives of the doxer, the doxee's perspective has remained largely unexplored. Drawing on data from 14 individuals who have experienced doxing, this study examines the consequences of doxing from the doxee's point of view. Employing the lens of approach and avoidance coping, we explore how doxees respond to doxing threats and adapt their behavior. Our research provides novel insight and themes related to doxing. Based on our analysis, we offer an agenda for information systems (IS) research and practice, paving the way for exploring doxing and potential remedies. Collapse

Abstract: When adopting and diffusing new Information Systems (IS) people often show signs of resistance and animosity when they are required to change their behaviour caused by the introduction and implementation of new digital technology in organisational settings. However, resistance may take many forms and may vary from stakeholder to stakeholder. Further, it may be very challenging to know how to handle and cope with different types of resistance. Understanding different types of resistance and how one will meet and experience them is an extremely important part of any digital transformation in order to make the wished-for change happen. In this paper we analyse 6000 Facebook postings that revolve around a new digital healthcare platform with more than 40,000 daily users that all were required to adopt and use the new healthcare system. We infer an overall typology of resistance to change (RtC) that enhances the understanding of the phenomenon and paves the way for new potential coping strategies. Collapse

Abstract: Crowdsourcing holds great potential: macro-task crowdsourcing can, for example, contribute to work addressing climate change. Macro-task crowdsourcing aims to use the wisdom of a crowd to tackle non-trivial tasks such as wicked problems. However, macro-task crowdsourcing is labor-intensive and complex to facilitate, which limits its efficiency, effectiveness, and use. Technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) might overcome these limits by supporting the facilitation of crowdsourcing. However, AI’s potential for macro-task crowdsourcing facilitation needs to be better understood for this to happen. Here, we turn to affordance theory to develop this understanding. Affordances help us describe action possibilities that characterize the relationship between the facilitator and AI, within macro-task crowdsourcing. We follow a two-stage, bottom-up approach: The initial development stage is based on a structured analysis of academic literature. The subsequent validation & refinement stage includes two observed macro-task crowdsourcing initiatives and six expert interviews. From our analysis, we derive seven AI affordances that support 17 facilitation activities in macro-task crowdsourcing. We also identify specific manifestations that illustrate the affordances. Our findings increase the scholarly understanding of macro-task crowdsourcing and advance the discourse on facilitation. Further, they help practitioners identify potential ways to integrate AI into crowdsourcing facilitation. These results could improve the efficiency of facilitation activities and the effectiveness of macro-task crowdsourcing. Collapse

Abstract: Social media platforms facilitate the sharing of a vast magnitude of information in split seconds among users. However, some false information, generally referred to as "fake news", is also widely spread. This can have major negative impacts on individuals and societies. Unfortunately, people are often not able to correctly identify fake news from authentic news. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find effective mechanisms to fight fake news on social media. To this end, this paper adapts the Straub Model of Security Action Cycle to the context of combating fake news on social media. It uses the adapted framework to classify the vast literature on fake news into action cycle phases (i.e., deterrence, prevention, detection, and mitigation/remedy). Based on a systematic and inter-disciplinary review of the relevant literature, we analyze the status and the challenges in each stage of combating fake news, followed by introducing future research directions. These efforts allow the development of a holistic view of the research frontier on fighting fake news online. We conclude that this is a multidisciplinary issue, and as such, a collaborative effort from different fields is needed to effectively address this problem. Collapse

Abstract: Social media platforms offer a convenient way for people to interact and exchange information. However, there are sustained concerns that filter bubbles and echo chambers create information-limiting environments (ILEs) for their users. Despite a well-developed conceptual understanding, the empirical evidence regarding the causes and supporting conditions of these ILEs remains inconclusive. This paper addresses this gap by applying the triple-filter-bubble model developed by Geschke et al. (2019) to analyze empirical literature on the individual, social, and technological causes of ILEs. While we identify some factors that increase the probability of ILEs under certain conditions, our findings do not suffice to thoroughly validate conceptual models that explain why ILEs emerge. Therefore, we call for future research to investigate the causes of ILEs with higher external validity to develop a more comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. Collapse

Abstract: We offer theory and evidence regarding the impact of content ideology (i.e., emotionally charged beliefs expressed in sentiments) on opinion polarization (i.e., conflicting attitudes about an event) on social media. Specifically, we consider the moderating role of functional affordances and symbolic expressions to draw in­ ferences about opinion polarization. From a sentiment analysis of 3600 posts and a survey of 468 Weibo users, we find that content ideology is positively related to social media opinion polarization. The effect of content ideology is greater when users receive stronger symbolic expressions. Further, our results show an insignificant moderating relationship between functional affordances and this effect. The findings suggest that it is critical to consider content ideology and symbolic expressions when assessing the relationship between published content and polarized opinions on social media. Abstract: The extensive use of social media has sparked a controversial debate regarding interactions on social media platforms and their influence on network polarization, a phenomenon that still misses conceptual clarity and consensus. By conducting a systematic literature review on empirical findings concerning network polarization, we take first steps to a more systematic conceptualization of polarization. We do this by identifying (a) the different dimensions on which polarization manifests itself, and (b) the relevant influence factors associated with the emergence of polarization phenomena in online social networks. We identified Attitude Extremity, Topic Diversity, Social Fragmentation, and Linguistic Usage as the dimensions on which polarization can be observed. Furthermore, we derive an integrated research framework covering a comprehensive set of mechanisms associated with polarization on social media, hence serving as a useful starting point for further investigation of polarization phenomena in IS research and the unintended consequences of ICT usage.
