Abstract: There is an urgent need in many critical infrastructure sectors, including the energy sector, for attaining detailed insights into cybersecurity features and compliance with cybersecurity requirements related to their Operational Technology (OT) deployments. Frequent feature changes of OT devices interfere with this need, posing a great risk to customers. One effective way to address this challenge is via a semi-automated cyber-physical security assurance approach, which enables verification and validation of the OT device cybersecurity claims against actual capabilities, both pre- and post-deployment. To realize this approach, this article presents new methodology and algorithms to automatically identify cybersecurity-related claims expressed in natural language form in ICS device documents. We developed an identification process that employs natural language processing (NLP) techniques with the goal of semi-automated vetting of detected claims against their device implementation. We also present our novel NLP components for verifying feature claims against relevant cybersecurity requirements. The verification pipeline includes components such as automated vendor identification, device document curation, feature claim identification utilizing sentiment analysis for conflict resolution, and reporting of features that are claimed to be supported or indicated as unsupported. Our novel matching engine represents the first automated information system available in the cybersecurity domain that directly aids the generation of ICS compliance reports. Collapse

Abstract: This paper reports on AI research into online misinformation pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic within the Canadian context. This is part of our longerterm goal, i.e., development of a machine-learning tool to assist social media platforms, online service providers and government agencies in identifying and responding to misinformation on social media. We report on predictive accuracies accomplished by applying a combination of technologies, including a custom-designed web-crawler, The Dark Crawler, the Posit toolkit, and four different machine-learning models based on Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machines, LibLinear and LibShortText. Overall, we found that Posit and LibShortText models showed higher levels of correlation to the pre-determined (manual and machine-driven) data classifications than the other machine-learning algorithms tested. We further argue that the harms associated with COVID-19 misinformatione.g., the social and economic damage, and the deaths and severe illnessesoutweigh the right to personal privacy and freedom of speech considerations. Abstract: Medical image annotation aims to automatically describe the content of medical images. It helps doctors to understand the content of medical images and make better informed decisions like diagnoses. Existing methods mainly follow the approach for natural images and fail to emphasize the object abnormalities, which is the essence of medical images annotation. In light of this, we propose to transform the medical image annotation to a multi-label classification problem, where object abnormalities are focused directly. However, extant multi-label classification studies rely on arduous feature engineering, or do not solve label correlation issues well in medical images. To solve these problems, we propose a novel deep learning model where a frequent pattern mining component and an adversarial-based denoising autoencoder component are introduced. Extensive experiments are conducted on a real retinal image dataset to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. Results indicate that the proposed model significantly outperforms image captioning baselines and multi-label classification baselines. Collapse

Abstract: Online dating has transformed the way people meet and start relationships. However, online dating platforms typically have many lurkers without active participation. Using a self-regulation framework, this paper aims to study users’ active participation in online dating through a mixed methods study. We first conducted qualitative and quantitative investigations with a machine learning method to explore user active participation and its antecedents. We then developed a theoretical model and conducted a statistical analysis of the model. The empirical findings showed that service quality and trust significantly affected individual active participation in a dating site through attachments to the daters and services. The findings of the study contribute to the extant literature by analyzing user participation in online dating from an attachment perspective. Collapse

Abstract: The spreading of disinformation in social media threatens cybersecurity and undermines market efficiency. Detecting disinformation is challenging due to large volumes of social media content and a rapidly changing environment. This research developed and validated a theory-based, novel deep-learning approach (called TRNN) to disinformation detection. Grounded in social and psychological theories, TRNN uses deep-learning and data-centric augmentation to enhance disinformation detection in financial social media. Temporal and contextual information is encoded as specific knowledge about human-validated disinformation, which was identified from our unique collection of 745,139 financial social media messages about four U.S. high-tech company stocks and their fine-grained trading data. TRNN uses multiple series of long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neurons to learn dynamic and hidden patterns to support disinformation detection. Our experimental findings show that TRNN significantly outperformed widely-used machine learning techniques in terms of precision, recall, F-score and accuracy, achieving consistently better classification performance in disinformation detection. A case study of Apple Inc.’s stock price movement demonstrates the potential usability of TRNN for secure knowledge management. The research contributes to developing novel approach and model, producing new information systems artifacts and dataset, and providing empirical findings of detecting online disinformation. Abstract: Content analysis traditionally involves human coders manually combing through text documents to search for relevant concepts and categories. However, this approach is time-intensive and not scalable, particularly for secondary data like social media content, news articles, or corporate reports. To address this problem, the paper presents an automated framework called Automated Deductive Content Analysis of Text (ADCAT) that uses deep learning-based semantic techniques, an ontology of validated construct measures, a large language model, human-in-the-loop disambiguation, and a novel augmentation-based weighted contrastive learning approach for improved language representations, to build a scalable approach for deductive content analysis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to identify firm innovation strategies from their 10-K reports to obtain inferences reasonably close to human coding. Collapse

Abstract: Question Answering (QA) systems can significantly reduce manual effort of searching for relevant information. However, challenges arise from a lack of domain-specificity and the fact that QA systems usually retrieve answers from short text passages instead of long scientific articles. We aim to address these challenges by (1) exploring the use of transformer models for long sequence processing, (2) performing domain adaptation for the Information Systems (IS) discipline and (3) developing novel techniques by performing domain adaptation in multiple training phases. Our models were pre-trained on a corpus of 2 million sentences retrieved from 3,463 articles from the Senior Scholars' Basket and fine-tuned on SQuAD and a manually created set of 500 QA pairs from the IS field.In six experiments, we tested two transfer learning techniques for fine-tuning (TANDA and FANDO). Abstract: Recent advances in generative models such as GPT may be used to fabricate indistinguishable fake customer reviews at a much lower cost, posing challenges for social media platforms to detect this kind of content. This study addresses two research questions: (1) the effective detection of AI-generated restaurant reviews generated from high-quality elite authentic reviews, and (2) the comparison of out-of-sample predicted AI-generated reviews and authentic reviews across multiple dimensions of review, user, restaurant, and content characteristics. We fine-tuned a GPT text detector to predict fake reviews, significantly outperforming existing solutions. We applied the model to predict non-elite reviews that already passed the Yelp filtering system, revealing that AI-generated reviews typically score higher ratings, users posting such content have less established Yelp reputations and AI-generated reviews are more comprehensible and less linguistically complex than human-generated reviews. Notably, machine-generated reviews are more prevalent in low-traffic restaurants in terms of customer visits. Collapse

Abstract: This study uses a design science research methodology to develop and evaluate the Pi-Mind agent, an information technology artefact that acts as a responsible, resilient, ubiquitous cognitive clone – or a digital copy – and an autonomous representative of a human decision-maker. Pi-Mind agents can learn the decision-making capabilities of their “donors” in a specific training environment based on generative adversarial networks. A trained clone can be used by a decision-maker as an additional resource for one’s own cognitive enhancement, as an autonomous representative, or even as a replacement when appropriate. The assumption regarding this approach is as follows: when someone was forced to leave a critical process because of, for example, sickness, or wanted to take care of several simultaneously running processes, then they would be more confident knowing that their autonomous digital representatives were as capable and predictable as their exact personal “copy”. The Pi-Mind agent was evaluated in a Ukrainian higher education environment and a military logistics laboratory. In this paper, in addition to describing the artefact, its expected utility, and its design process within different contexts, we include the corresponding proof of concept, proof of value, and proof of use.
