Abstract: The manipulation of online consumer reviews (OCRs) became a global phenomenon. Although policymakers require platforms to delete OCRs that are identified as fake, they also urge to consider the principle of freedom of expression before deleting content. Since fake OCR detection algorithms are imperfect, platforms must either balance preventive deletion with preserving freedom of expression, or they can simply tag OCRs that are potentially fake. In this paper, we examine the consequences of the latter. With an incentive-compatible experiment, we observe that tagging fake OCRs harms relevant consumer trust dimensions. Contrary to our expectations, tags do not serve as trust-increasing signals for the platform as a signal provider. They do, however, not only directly harm consumers' trust in OCRs and reviewers, but also indirectly via the activation of consumers' persuasion knowledge. Although consumer trust decreases, we find no negative economic consequences for the platform from tagging potential fake OCRs. Collapse

Abstract: Although much literature has discussed the potential of e-government for improving citizens’ trust in govern­ ment, the question of how e-government use affects citizens’ trust in government remains underexplored. To investigate the driving mechanism of the effects of different types of e-government use on trust in government, this research develops a conceptual framework based on the institutional-based trust theory, the process-based trust theory, and the expectancy-disconfirmation model. Based on data collected from 1668 citizen users living in five cities in China, the study verifies the proposed mediated moderation model and then tests the robustness of the results using process analysis. The results reveal that citizens’ use of e-government revitalizes their trust in government indirectly, via influence on citizens’ evaluation of government integrity, performance, and responsiveness from the experience of using e-government, while the mediating effects of citizens’ evaluation of government on relationship between e-government use and public trust are diminished by citizens’ expectations for their government. The analysis also offers strong support for the conclusion that the effects of different types of e-government use on public trust are differentially distributed among multiple levels of governments in China. Abstract: Although organizational factors related to big data analytics (BDA) and its performance have been studied extensively, the number of failed BDA projects continues to rise. The quality of BDA information is a commonly cited factor in explanations for such failures and could prove key to improving project performance. Using the resource-based view (RBV) lens, data analytics literature, business strategy control, and an empirical setup of two studies based on marketing and information technology managerial data, we draw on the dimensions of the balanced scorecard (BSC) as an integrating framework of BDA organizational factors. Specifically, we tested a model –from two different perspectives– that would explain information quality through analytical talent and organizations’ data plan alignment. Results showed that both managers have a different understanding of what information quality is. The characteristics that make marketing a better informer of information quality are identified. In addition, hybrid (embedded) type analyst placements are seen to achieve better performance. Moreover, we add greater theoretical rigour by incorporating the moderating effect of the use of big data ana­ lytics in companies. Finally, the BSC provided a greater causal understanding of the resources and capabilities within a data strategy. Collapse

Abstract: Mixed or inconsistent opinions are commonplace in online reviews. Prior research shows that review inconsistency has different effects: its product-level manifestation in the form of inconsistent product ratings is associated with poorer sales, but its review-level manifestation in the form of two-sided arguments is associated with greater helpfulness and credibility evaluations of the review. In practice, consumers rarely consult all reviews or just a single review before they make purchase decisions. Instead, they often read a set of featured reviews (i.e., a review set) and some additional reviews if needed. Focusing on inconsistency in a review set, we introduce a new type of inconsistency across reviews that does not exist within a single review or at the level of product ratings: cross-review incoherence, which refers to disagreement among reviewers about specific product features. Based on cognitive dissonance theory, we explore how and when cross-review incoherence influences helpfulness and credibility judgments of the review set, revealing that consumers’ reactions to such incoherence might operate differently beyond an individual review. In addition, we examine how and why consumers’ judgments of a review set influence their purchase deferral—that is, the likelihood of making a buy-or-not-buy decision immediately after consulting the top reviews or deferring it until after obtaining more information. Two laboratory experiments demonstrate that cross-review incoherence increases purchase deferral via more negative evaluations of the review set that, in turn, reduce attitude certainty. In addition, the negative effect of cross-review incoherence on review set evaluations is weaker when the reviewers provide more contextual information behind their opinions. These findings deepen our understanding of inconsistency across multiple pieces of information; reveal the consequences of review evaluations during an understudied stage of consumers’ decision-making process; and provide critical implications for review platforms, companies, and reviewers. Abstract: Despite increasing attention to online learning worldwide, learning complex technologies online has always been challenging and even a hindrance to students who are subjected to elevated levels of technostress. In contrast to most previous studies that focused on the negative side of technostress, this study investigated both the negative and positive sides of technostress. Based on the Challenge Hindrance Framework (CHF), the Holistic Stress Model (HSM), and the Person-Environment Fit (P-E Fit) model, we examined how challenge and hindrance techno-stressors caused distress and eustress in online students and lead to associated outcomes. We empirically validated the research model by analyzing survey data collected from 565 online graduate business students enrolled at a university in the United States. The results revealed that some hindrance and challenge techno-stressors were associated with techno-distress and techno-eustress, which further impacted student satisfaction and student retention. We discussed the contributions and implications and provided future research directions. Collapse

Abstract: While celebrity cyberbullying has increased, previous research mainly focuses on bystanders’ role in general cyberbullying, and the motives for bystander pro-celebrity cyberbullying (BPCB) remain under-investigated. Drawing on the social exchange theory, we investigate BPCB on social media, specifically how publicity and network mutuality affect bystanders’ cost–benefit assessment of, and consequent pro-cyberbullying intention towards, celebrities. The results show that publicity and network mutuality influence bystanders’ perceived susceptibility to retaliation and expected social capital gains, with the former reducing BPCB intention and the latter strengthening it. This work contributes to the research on cyberbullying and offers guidance in combating celebrity cyberbullying. Collapse

Abstract: A primary objective of blockchain technology is to address information security and efficiency issues related to existing information sharing systems. For the sharing of health records, little is known about the application of blockchain in management information systems. There are strict regulations for sharing health information due to insecure systems and privacy concerns. To significantly and effectively improve medical diagnosis, it is beneficial to have efficient, reliable, and accurate accessibility to a patient’s full medical history. Due to concerns with the security of health systems and privacy concerns, medical histories are not always accessible to healthcare providers. To help increase accessibility options, this research proposes a blockchain-based model that facilitates sharing medical records in a manner that is beneficial to both healthcare providers and patients. Social exchange theory provides the theoretical support for the conceptual model presented. Experimental findings based on 151 participants revealed that the blockchain technology can provide a secure information system and increase patient motivation to share medical records. To show the applicability of the proposed use of blockchain from a practical managerial perspective, we show feasibility by developing an Android software application. Collapse

Abstract: This article evaluates how firms are able to enhance the effectiveness of their Risk Management Infrastructure (RMI) by using Big Data Analytics (BDA) to improve their risk resilience capability. A theoretical model is developed and the corresponding hypothesis is tested through a survey instrument and quantitative analysis. Abstract: Sponsored reviews have become prevalent on e-commerce websites, third-party review platforms, and social media. To explore the interactive effect between sponsorship disclosure of positive reviews, emotional intensity, and tie strength on online review credibility and consumers’ purchase intention, this study proposed a moderated moderation model. In an online scenario-based experiment, we found that sponsorship disclosure of positive reviews negatively influences consumers’ purchase intention, and review credibility mediates the relationship. In addition, emotional intensity strengthens the negative effects of sponsorship disclosure of positive reviews on review credibility and purchase intention, while tie strength weakens the moderating effects of emotional intensity. Abstract: Previous research has suggested that unlearning is not linked to performance improvements in a team setting. Further, unlearning may have deleterious effects on performance outcomes because when it happens, teams are likely to lose the way they perform tasks and the reasons for their operational existence. In contrast, this study predicts that teams can conduct exploitative and exploratory activities in a balanced manner predicated on unlearning practices to improve new product development (NPD) performance. We hypothesized that while unlearning allows NPD teams to balance exploitative and exploratory learning activities, simultaneous yet balanced exploitation and exploration at high levels, namely innovation ambidexterity, links unlearning practices to NPD performance. This occurs by providing task-relevant knowledge for the replacement of outdated routines and beliefs during NPD processes. Data were collected from 198 NPD teams (i.e., 464 individual participants). The examination of ordinary least squares regression-based path analyses revealed that innovation ambidexterity mediates the relationship of unlearning with NPD performance, operationalized as product development speed, cost, and product success. Overall, this study shows that the unlearning-performance relationship occurs through simultaneous exploitative and exploratory learning activities in a balanced manner. Collapse
