Abstract: The potential ethical issues of their digital products and services for consumers represent a challenge for many companies. Above obeying the laws, stakeholders expect companies to consider any ethical ramifications of their products and services. Companies have responded by establishing different digital ethics governance approaches, such as ethics boards, new specialist roles, or extended responsibilities for compliance officers. However, criticism holds that all approaches may only be "ethics washing", lacking the effectiveness to influence product and service design effectively. An informed response requires a unified view to judge the effectiveness of digital ethics governance approaches on digital product and service design. We hold that dignity is the missing link to connect ethical governance approaches with their effects on the operational level. We, therefore, provide the CAGE Framework (Claims, Affronts, Governance, Effects) for dignity, which details the organisational lifecycle for effective digital ethics governance. Collapse

Abstract: We develop a theory to explain why, how, and under what conditions corporate strategy changes negatively affect a multibusiness firm’s ability to design and effectively operate IT controls, and lead to the emergence of IT control material weaknesses (IT MW). Corporate strategy changes such as diversification, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and divestitures alter a firm’s complicatedness by adding or removing business units. These changes can also affect the firm’s complexity by altering the degree of interrelatedness among the firm’s businesses. We hypothesize that corporate strategy changes that affect the firm’s complexity are more likely to increase IT MW than those that only affect the firm’s complicatedness. Complexity-altering corporate strategy changes are likely to disrupt all three types of IT controls: IT controls over technology, IT controls over business processes, and IT controls over people’s behaviors. We hypothesize that the changes are likely to disrupt the IT controls over people much more than IT controls over technology or business processes. Complexity-altering corporate strategy changes are also likely to affect the design effectiveness of the IT controls much more than the operating effectiveness of the IT controls. We find support for these ideas in a longitudinal study of 2,477 publicly traded U.S. firms. Results also indicate that the internal control material weaknesses (IC MW)that emerge following corporate strategy changes are primarily due to IT MWrather than non-IT MW. The proposed theory and the findings have important implications for research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Last year, human mankind exhausted the planet’s resources for the year as early as never before by consuming food, water, or clean air beyond the nature’s sustainable means. To prevent further environmental damages, understanding and promoting individual pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) is crucial. However, motivating individual PEB is considered difficult as it is often costlier and more burdensome than non-eco-friendly behaviour. One promising recent approach is the concept of ‘digital nudging’, which examines the effectiveness of user-interface elements to guide people’s behaviour in digital choice environments. Prior research has focused on nudging PEB through anchoring and adjustment, overlooking the import nudging mechanisms of priming and status quo bias. To test nudges’ direct and interaction effects on motivating individual PEB, we conducted a randomized, laboratory experiment with 120 participants. We find that groups nudged with a status quo bias acted more pro-environmentally. Surprisingly, we find no differences in PEB between groups nudged with priming and the control group, indicating priming’s ineffectiveness in motivating PEB. Our study contributes to research on Green IS and digital nudging and offers directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Effective IT governance will ensure alignment between IT and business goals. Organizations with ineffective IT governance will suffer due to poor performance of IT resources such as inaccurate information quality, inefficient operating costs, runaway IT project and even the demise of its IT department. This study seeks to examine empirically the individual IT governance mechanisms that influence the overall effectiveness of IT governance. Furthermore, this study examines the relationship of effective IT governance, the extent of IT outsourcing decisions within the organizations, and the level of IT Intensity in the organizations. We used structural equation modeling analysis to examine 110 responses from members of ISACA (Information Systems and Audit Control Association) Australia in which their organizations have outsourced their IT functions. Results suggest significant positive relationships between the overall level of effective IT governance and the following mechanisms: the involvement of senior management in IT, the existence of ethic or culture of compliance in IT, and corporate communication systems.
