Abstract: Facing ever-looming climate change, studying the drivers for individuals ' Information Systems (IS) Use to reduce environmental harm gains momentum. While extant research on the antecedents of sustainable IS Use has focused on specific theories, interventions, contexts, and technologies, a holistic understanding has become increasingly elusive, with a synthesis remaining absent. We employ a systematic literature review methodology to shed light on the driving antecedents for sustainable IS Use among individual consumers. Our results build on findings of 29 empirical studies drawn from 598 articles retrieved from our premier outlets and a forward/backward search. The analysis reveals six salient complementary antecedents: Relief, Empowerment, Default, User-centricity, Salience, and Encouragement. We recommend considering these concepts when developing, deploying, promoting, or regulating digital technologies to mitigate individual consumers' emissions. Along with memorable and implementable concepts, our theoretical framework offers a novel conceptualization and four promising avenues for researchers on sustainable IS Use. Collapse

Abstract: Reducing the level of carbon intensity -i.e., the level of carbon emission -is an important issue in cooperate IT management. Drawing upon the belief-action-outcome (BAO) framework, this study examines the impact of two different IT resources -i.e., onpremises IT (OPIT) and on-demand IT (ODIT) -on a firm's carbon intensity. Also, we examine the moderating impact of green management strategies -i.e., environmental board oversight and environmental management incentives -on the effect of OPIT and ODIT on a firm's carbon intensity. Using panel data with a sample of 3074 observations collected from 864 firms from 2016 to 2019, we find that OPIT usage is positively associated with carbon intensity, whereas ODIT usage is negatively associated with carbon intensity. In addition, we find that, while environmental board oversight mitigates the positive direct impact of OPIT on carbon intensity, environmental management incentives reinforce the negative direct impact of ODIT on carbon intensity. Abstract: Electric vehicles (EVs) are considered a product rather than a mobility service. The expansion of EV services requires large amounts of personal information. Due to privacy concerns, EV users may deactivate these services, leading to the discontinuance of EV services and value destruction. Service dominant logic is improving insights into the roles of resources (e.g., personal data) and institutions (e.g., concerns) in influencing individual behaviours in value co-creation (e.g., disclosing personal data). This logic is a metaperspective that needs to be integrated with mid-range theories (e.g., the enhanced antecedents-privacy concerns-outcomes) to investigate how resources, institutions and value co-creation are integrated and how to quantify this integration. This study conducted an online survey of EV users. The findings show that privacy awareness, environmental concerns and privacy concerns influence privacy calculus. However, perceived environmental performance has a stronger impact than privacy risks on intentions to continue disclosing personal data for EV services. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the increased focus on organizational security policies and programs, some employees continue to engage in maladaptive responses to security measures (i.e., behaviors other than those recommended, intended, or prescribed). To help shed light on insiders' adaptive and maladaptive responses to IS security measures, we conducted a case study of an organization at the forefront of security policy initiatives. Drawing on the beliefs-actions-outcomes (BAO) model to analyze our case data, we uncover a potentially nonvirtuous cycle consisting of security-related beliefs, actions, and outcomes, which we refer to as an "adversarial dance." Explaining our results, we describe a novel belief framework that identifies four security belief profiles and uncovers an underexplored outcome of IS security: insiders' lived security experiences. We find that individuals' unfavorable lived security experiences produce counterproductive security-related beliefs that, in turn, lead to maladaptive behaviors. Maladaptive behaviors create new potential for security risk, leading to increased organizational security measures to counter them. Thus, the adversarial dance continues, as the new security measures have the potential to reinforce counterproductive security-related beliefs about the importance and risk of IS security and lead to new maladaptive behaviors. To help situate our findings within the current security literature, we integrate the results with prior research based on extant theories. While this paper is not the first to suggest that security measures can elicit maladaptive behaviors, the emergent belief framework and expanded BAO model of IS security constitute an important contribution to the behavioral IS security literature.Puzant Balozian is an assistant professor of computer information systems at James Madison University. Abstract: We conducted a field experiment to compare the effects of information systems (IS) supporting reflective disclosure and information democratization on the sustainability footprint of a routine organizational work practice, paper printing. We find that both sensemaking processes lead to employees reducing their printing; however, the processes are interchangeable and do not mutually reinforce each other’s effects. This finding contrasts a latent assumption of prior research about a co-dependence between reflective disclosure and infor­ mation democratization, and suggests organizations have a choice in how they can design and use IS to help employees make sense of different possibilities for more eco-efficient work.
