Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an enforced ‘big bang’ adoption of working from home, involving the rapid implementation and diffusion of digital collaboration technologies. This radical shift to enforced working from home led to substantial changes in the practice of work. Using a qualitative research approach and drawing on the interview accounts of 29 knowledge workers required to work from home during the pandemic, the study identified five sociomaterial practices that were significantly disrupted and required reconfiguration of their constitutive social and material elements to renew them. The paper further shows evidence of the ongoing evolution of those sociomaterial practices among the participants, as temporary breakdowns in their performance led to further adjustments and fine-tuning. The study extends the body of knowledge on working from home and provides a fine-grained analysis of specific complexities of sociomaterial practice and change as actors utilize conceptual and contextual sensemaking to perceive and exploit possibilities for action in their unfolding practice of work. Against the backdrop of the increasing adoption of hybrid working in the aftermath of the pandemic, the paper offers four pillars derived from the findings that support the establishment of a conducive working from home environment. Abstract: Heidegger's philosophy has long been one of the core references for information systems (IS) researchers, often drawing upon one of two distinct perspectives he employed in his writings. The first of these perspectives is found in Heidegger's work on presence, and the second in his work on relations. We refer to these two as his presence perspective and his relation perspective. The presence perspective builds on ideas developed in early sections of his major work, Being and Time (1927:1996), contrasting the presence of being-in-the-world with that of readiness-at-hand. The relation perspective builds on ideas developed in later sections of Being and Time, elaborating on the concept of being-with [Mitsein]. We discuss the ways these two key perspectives in his philosophy are intertwined and reinforce each other when we consider them together, and how they amplify and extend each other's scope of effect in human situated practice. We argue that Heidegger's philosophical perspective on human existence is a powerful theoretical lens for understanding both the subjective and the objective poles of our experience of being in the world. It provides an integrated framework for research on both poles that is useful across the IS field. Collapse

Abstract: Turnover contagion has created salient challenges for companies and society as turnover itself causes more turnover. Technically, due to the nonlinear growth of overall turnover rate within a short time, turnover is difficult to accurately predict. As a result, predicting and managing turnover contagion have become key issues in people analytics systems. However, existing studies on turnover contagion has primarily focused on its consequence such as time-lagged turnover, while how to identify turnover contagion effect and leverage it to improve the interpretability of turnover prediction algorithm remains under explored. Building upon the behavioral contagion theory, this research-in-progress paper proposes using machine learning method to calculate the turnover contagion effect based on the susceptible-infective epidemic model. This study lays a theoretical foundation to leverage social network data to examine turnover contagion, and practically contributes to managerial practice in designing turnover prediction systems for both efficiency and interpretability. Abstract: Management research is increasingly using fiction as an insightful way to analyze complex organizational dynamics. Focusing on user appropriation of Knowledge Management Systems, we describe how we used the popular Ast´erix, a well-known French cartoon to better understand KMS appropriation. We came to use this approach in an action research project in a large French construction firm initially designed to help Chief Knowledge Officers address KMS non-use. After our first findings showed paradoxical cultural issues, and based on the idea that culture is central to sensemaking and appropriation, we used the notion of the cultural metaphor to help better understand the cultural aspects associated with KMS appropriation. These results contribute knowledge in three different areas. First, we underline the role of cultural metaphors in infor­ mation systems appropriation. Second, we enrich the literature on the role of fiction in man­ agement by illustrating the role of cultural metaphors. Third, we report on how this can be used in an action research project to help better understand KMS appropriation issues, which has the potential of leading to practical managerial action. Collapse

Abstract: Given current trends in digitalization and the increased need to understand ways to improve remote work, it's imperative for IS to understand the emergence of noncompliant behaviors of workers to ESN implementation. This research-in-progress proposed a model into how privacy concerns might trigger workarounds while implementing Enterprise Social Networks (ESN), expanding our understanding of the types of information-sharing workarounds that might be pursued and the steps that might explain such decision process. The model focuses on privacy triggers that might react to this visualization affordances of these technologies. The proposed model emphasizes the important role of privacy management and the alternative responses to managerial trends that favor openness and transparency for organizing. It contributes to the literature on how privacy and transparency jointly affect human behavior and, more specifically, technological use. Collapse

Abstract: There has been an exponential growth use of enterprise social networks for improved communication, connection, collaboration and enhanced knowledge sharing within organizations. However, the intended benefits of this social network deployment have not been fully realized due to the relative low usage among employees. This study provides an insight into the underlying factors deemed likely to influence employees’ enterprise social networks consumptive and contributive use by modifying and extending the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). An online survey was conducted and data were collected from 158 employees whose organizations are currently deploying a workplace social platform. The data were validated and analyzed using partial least square (PLS-SEM) method and Ordered Logistic Regression (OLR). Significant differences were found regarding the factors that influence consumptive and contributive use. The most influential factors for consumptive use are performance expectancy and content value, followed by facilitating conditions and effort expectancy. On the other hand, the contributive use is strongly influenced by social influence, content value and relationship expectancy. Moreover, a more balanced use pattern as measured by a smaller gap in consumptive and contributive use is shown to be positively associated with increased overall enterprise social network use. This study provides implications for managers to develop appropriate interventions to address idiosyncratic enterprise social network use patterns, minimize resistance and maximize effective utilization of the social platform among employees. This paper fulfills the need to identify important factors to be actively managed and manipulated to fully realize the benefits from the investment of enterprise social network. Collapse
