Abstract: Models play an important role in systems analysis and design (SAD). A diagrammatic model is defined as a mapping from a domain to a visual representation in such a way that relevant information is preserved to meet a specific goal. So far, cognitive research on diagram criteria in relation to task performance has been fragmented. The aim of this paper is to (1) consolidate research on the cognitive processing steps involved during understanding and task performance with diagrams, (2) consolidate corresponding criteria for such diagrams to best support cognitive processing, and (3) demonstrate the support effective diagrams provide for performing SAD tasks. Addressing the first aim, we develop a theoretical cognitive framework of task performance with diagrams called CogniDia. It integrates different cognitive theories from research on diagrams in software engineering and information systems. Regarding the second aim, we review the literature to organize criteria for effective cognitive processing of diagrams. We identify research gaps on verbal and task processing. Regarding the third aim, we use the theoretical cognitive framework to investigate how diagrams support the SAD process effectively. Collapse

Abstract: Through the lens of Heidegger’s analysis of equipment, this study observes ‘software reuse’ – a popular phenomenon in the world. It presents an alternative conceptual view of the software artefact as ‘equipment’. This view provides a theoretical underpinning to this prominent practice to recognize software artefacts, as equipment. Employing the case study method, this study reports preliminary results of five software development projects to investigate the development and reusability of software artefacts. Two types of generalizability were identified: 1) horizontal generalizability, and 2) vertical generalizability. From the results it can be inferred that reusability of software artefacts may depend on the type of generalizability. The level of reusability of software artefacts may increase the level of maturity of software artefacts. Furthermore, the results indicated that the software artefacts were updated rapidly in the initial stages, compared to final stages of software development lifecycle. Collapse

Abstract: This study presents an evolutionary approach to support dynamic enterprise modeling for enterprise process cooperative scheduling and management. In this paper, an evolutionary dynamic enterprise process modeling method was proposed from the concepts of enterprise process evolution to zero-time enterprise modeling and layered complex enterprise modeling. Based on an autonomous agent development platform, an agent-based enterprise collaborative modeling environment has been implemented by integrating several software resource agents that wrap main function modules of EPMS.
