Abstract: Servitization describes the transformation of a manufacturer to a customer-centric service and solution provider. Providing customer solutions requires the integration of knowledge from different domains, e.g., engineering, software, and service, and usually also entails that more knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) become part of the manufacturer's overall business model. Against this background, this article investigates how manufacturing and software firms leverage knowledge in KIBS and corresponding business models. We developed a taxonomy that systematizes KIBS along the three metadimensions of value proposition, value creation, and value capture. The application of our taxonomy to exemplary cases from both industries shows different strategies of knowledge usage across these industries. Our findings can support the development of KIBS and help practitioners to understand different ways of utilizing knowledge as a strategic resource. Implications for research point to the need for better understanding the collaboration of multiple actors from a knowledge-based perspective. Collapse

Abstract: Entitlement has been identified as a potentially valuable employee characteristic in the prediction of computer abuse but has not been studied systematically in the IS domain. We introduce the construct of technological entitlement as the persistent sense of being more deserving of technological resources, uses, and privileges compared to other employees. Adapting a model of general entitlement to the work technology context, we theorize that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse and that this relationship is amplified by perceptions of technology restriction. After developing and validating a scale to measure technological entitlement, we conduct three studies with working adult samples to test our hypotheses. In Study 1 (n = 187), using a behavioral design, we find that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse behavior (beyond general entitlement) and that this relationship is stronger when employees perceive organizational restrictions on technology usage. We replicate these findings in Study 2 (n = 339) with an experiment. In Study 3 (n = 156), we manipulate the context of restrictiveness within our experimental vignette to establish the generalizability of our moderator. We discuss how technological entitlement helps explain existing inconsistencies in the effectiveness of deterrence measures as well as other theoretical and practical implications of our work. Abstract: This study examines how the use of algorithmic control within gig economy platforms relates to the well-being and behavior of workers. Specifically, we explore how two different forms of algorithmic control—gatekeeping and guiding—correspond with (positive) challenge technostressors and (negative) threat technostressors experienced by Uber drivers. We also examine the moderating impact of algorithmic control transparency on these relationships, as well as the outcomes of technostressors in terms of continuance intentions and workaround use. Based on a survey of 621 U.S.-based Uber drivers, we find that gatekeeping and guiding algorithmic control positively relate to both challenge and threat technostressors. The study bridges the literature on control and technostress by conceptualizing algorithmic control as a condition that puts workers under stress. This stress is found to contribute to important behavioral consequences pertaining to both continuance intentions and workaround use. Findings from our work suggest that gig economy organizations can use algorithmic control to enhance challenge technostressors for their workers, thereby contributing to the cultivation of a more committed workforce. Furthermore, we find evidence disputing the assumption that algorithmic control transparency can mitigate the negative effects of threat technostressors. Collapse

Abstract: Online Internet of Things (IoT) communities allow IoT engineers to publish information about their projects to a wider audience of users. Despite the growing adoption of IoT technologies in business, the popularity of IoT projects remains unexplored. Understanding how to improve the popularity of IoT projects helps project owners attract more users and foster business opportunities. In this paper, we explore the important characteristics of popular IoT projects across three facets: views count, respects count, and trending scores. We study over 18,000 IoT projects hosted on Hackster.io—a large online IoT community. In particular, we perform a time-series clustering to identify the evolution of each of the three popularity facets. In addition, we construct linear mixed-effect models to investigate the most important factors associated with the popularity of IoT projects. We provide insights to online IoT communities to improve the user guidelines to help (new) IoT engineers make their projects more eye-catching. Collapse

Abstract: Design Science Research (DSR) in the information systems (IS) field is, at its essence, about Digital Innovation (DI). Innovative sociotechnical design artifacts involve digital information technologies (IT) being used in ways that result in profound disruptions to traditional ways of doing business and to widespread societal changes. The pervasiveness of DI means that the individuals involved in bringing it about have diverse backgrounds, including application specialists, software engineers, data scientists, business managers, economists, venture capitalists, various user groups, and entrepreneurial leaders. This range of backgrounds means that DI, much more than traditional innovation, leads to varied perspectives on the methods and tools to be used in the development of effective and evolvable complex systems incorporating digital innovations. In this paper we present a new matrix approach to DI based on DSR, entrepreneurship, and innovation theories. Clear strategic guidance allows these multiple stakeholders to make sense of the diverse landscape and to understand when and how different entrepreneurial strategies for innovation can best be applied. We define the combined DSR and DI matrix approach in terms of four strategies: invention; advancement; exaptation; and exploitation and their associated DI practices. The research contribution is a novel DSR-DI matrix process model. This model extends entrepre­ neurship theory as it enriches effectuation thinking with more detailed process guidance for ambidextrous entrepreneurship and it enriches DSR models for DI by showing more explicitly the different pathways corre­ sponding to different quadrants in the knowledge-innovation matrix. Abstract: We examine the productivity implications of external knowledge flows obtained through an internet-mediated discussion forum in which IT professionals help one another solve problems related to the implementation and use of enterprise software. We extend elements of the absorptive capacity (ACAP) framework that have not previously been studied in the information systems (IS) literature to a new context. Consistent with prior results from the IS literature, we first show that IT spillovers—acquired through employees’ participation in this forum—only accrue to firms with prior related investments in enterprise software. We then demonstrate boundary conditions for ACAP based on characteristics of external knowledge affecting the ease of learning. Our results show that IT spillovers are not “free”; the ability to derive the value of IT spillovers through informal channels—such as online communities—critically depends on both prior related IT investments by the recipient firm and the novelty of external knowledge. Less intuitively, when knowledge originates from relatively novel or emergent domains, the role of prior related knowledge in absorbing spillovers becomes more important. Collapse

Abstract: Given the limitation of resources in organizations (time, money, staff, material, etc.), deciding which projects should be given priority – among many competing projects – is a constant and continuous challenge for decision makers. As a result, a proliferation of methods and solutions for project prioritization has been developed, each with its own strengths and limitations. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach for prioritizing projects taking into consideration four pervasive challenges in decision making: 1) uncertainty (imprecision and vagueness) of human decisions, 2) reliability (extent of sureness) of decision makers, 3) systematic identification of selection criteria, and 4) robustness of decision making (reasonable tolerance against insignificant changes to decision makers’ evaluations during the process). In doing so, we propose integrating Z-numbers theory with Quality Function Development (ZQFD), four Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (Z-MCDM) methods, ensemble ranking aggregation, and sensitivity analysis. The proposed method is then applied in a real-world organization with twenty IT projects to illustrate how our approach might be used in practice. Furthermore, we elaborate on the trustworthiness of the proposed method in light of 16 criteria available in the literature of structured decision making. Collapse

Abstract: This research in progress paper explores smart meters and demand side management (DSM) challenges and how this is perceived by suppliers of smart grids. It builds on semi-structured interviews and a literature review showing that smart meters are a highly important, relevant, and interesting research topic. We identify a need to include knowledge on how to develop smart meter technology further as well as how to increase both supplier and energy user engagement and involvement in development of smart meters technology. Our research shows that there exist gaps between: policies, goals and expectations on one side and implementation and use of smart meters on the other side. Based on initial results we conclude that there is a need to explore DSM and smart meter technology further and to learn from a social-technical IS perspective to overcome a one-sided perspective, or even deterministic view, on technology. Abstract: Recent developments in data-centric technologies (e.g., big data, Internet of Things, cloud computing) have given rise to the data-centric models, such as servitization. Servitization here refers to firms selling a product as a service instead of selling product ownership, which has been viewed as a green business model that can benefit the environment. Despite the potential environmental superiority of servitization, previous studies and empirical observations have shown that the servitization model may generate lower profits than the conventional product sales model, which poses challenges for firms to choose their business models. However, the existing literature has not considered the role of data-centric technologies that are increasingly embedded in the servitization model, in which firms can co-create value with consumers by leveraging product usage data to improve service offerings. In this study, we build an analytical model to scrutinize the economic and environmental performance of the data-centric servitization model compared to the product model. We find that the data-centric servitization model is more profitable than the product model only when a firm's service improvement capability is relatively high. Unfortunately, a high service improvement capability may exacerbate the negative environmental impact, resulting in the servitization model being less environmentally friendly than the product model. We discuss the circumstances under which using the servitization model can yield win-win outcomes in terms of profitability and environmental impact. The findings can help managers and policymakers reconcile the tension between firm profitability and environmental damage and make judicious decisions on business model choices and the application of emerging data-centric technologies.
