Abstract: A majority of RFID authentication scenarios involve a single tag that is identified independent of other tags in the field of the reader. However, there are situations that necessitate simultaneous authentication of multiple tags as well as the verification of their simultaneous physical proximity to the reader. Juels (2004) introduced yoking proof for simultaneous authentication of multiple RFID tags. Several researchers have since then developed variants of yoking proof using both symmetric and asymmetric cryptography. Given that the ambient conditions are bound to be very similar for all objects that are in close physical proximity to one another, we critically evaluate the use of various relevant ambient conditions for this purpose. Based on our evaluation, we choose to use tag temperature and develop a variant of yoking proof protocol for simultaneous authentication of multiple tags. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn the last few decades, there have been significant efforts in integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) into healthcare practices. This new paradigm commonly identified as electronic healthcare (e-health) allows provisioning of healthcare services at an affordable price to its consumers. However, there have been questions raised about the security of the sensitive information such as health records as well as the privacy of involving parties raising doubts on the minds of the general public. Thus, it is important to understand the potential security challenges in e-health systems and successfully resolve them by taking adequate measures to ensure fair utilization of such systems. In this paper, we have carried out a systematic state-of-the-art review over privacy preserving mechanisms that have been utilized on e-health solutions to achieve the security and privacy requirements while investigating to what extent such mechanisms are compatible with the identified requirements. Finally, we have pointed out some future research directions which could potentially contribute to develop secure and efficient e-health solutions. Collapse

Abstract: Unless specifically designed for its prevention, none of the existing RFID authentication protocols are immune to relay attacks. Relay attacks generally involve the presence of one or more adversaries who transfer unmodified messages between a prover and a verifier. Given that the message content is not modified, it is rather difficult to address relay attacks through cryptographic means. Extant attempts to prevent relay attacks involve measuring signal strength, round-trip distance, and ambient conditions in the vicinity of prover and verifier. While a majority of related authentication protocols are based on measuring the round-trip distance between prover and verifier using several single-bit challenge–response pairs, recent discussions include physical proximity verification using ambient conditions to address relay attacks. We provide an overview of existing literature on addressing relay attacks through ambient condition measurements. We then propose an elliptic curve-based mutual authentication protocol that addresses relay attacks based on (a) the surface temperature of the prover as measured by prover and verifier and (b) measured single-bit round-trip times between prover and verifier. We also evaluate the security properties of the proposed authentication protocol. Collapse
