Abstract: Advanced programming skills are required for computing courses on merging topics, and students often struggle to develop these skills to solve complex problems. Faculty tackle this challenge by providing extra lectures, practice sessions, technologies, and education tools. This paper discusses the challenges faced by computer science students in developing advanced programming skills and explores the use of AI chatbots, specifically ChatGPT, as a support tool for learning. We study the engagement and effectiveness of ChatGPT in helping students learn advanced programming skills using two engagement learning frameworks (CIE and MELT) for evaluation. The study involves designing a lab exercise for students to complete using ChatGPT and collecting data through surveys. We present the findings of the study and discuss the limitations of the work. Abstract: Advanced programming skills are required for computing courses on merging topics, and students often struggle to develop these skills to solve complex problems. To address this challenge, faculty members provide additional lectures, practice sessions, and educational technology tools. This paper discusses the challenges faced by computer science students in developing advanced programming skills and explores the use of AI chatbots, specifically ChatGPT, as a support tool for learning. Abstract: The relevance of data literacy has increased substantially over the past three decades. When trained well, data-literate employees at all levels can make data-driven decisions, improving the overall performance of their organization. Utilizing Transformative Learning Theory (TLT) and Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), this paper proposes a systematic data education framework for increasing data literacy across organizations. Focusing on the needs and experiences of non-expert end-users, this model proposes the following four learning strategies in data literacy training design: experiential data training, critical incident reflection, rational open discourse, and autonomous experimentation. To inform this model and further investigate barriers to data literacy in organizations, interviews were conducted with individuals from two different data analytics units in the U.S. Department of Defense. This research provides key insight and practical suggestions for developing and improving data literacy training programs. Collapse

Abstract: Driven by circumstances like the global pandemic many learners and educators realize the importance and value of self-regulated digital learning. To better support self-regulated learning, conversational agents have become more relevant. Conversational agents can act as tutor or as learning mate for learners. Although conversational agents have potential to better support self-regulated learning processes, challenges exist requiring implications about how to make these interactions more engaging and supportive. This study discusses the value of gamified conversational learning chatbots that use game elements to engage learners to guide researchers and practitioners to design conversational agents that effectively motivate learners and provide self-regulated learning at the same time. Therefore, we propose a systematically developed framework for gamifying educational conversational agents and contribute to theory by consolidating several theories about games, digital learning, and conversational agents and support practitioners by providing implications about what to care about when gamifying conversational agents. Abstract: This study discusses how students' temporal, adaptive processes, and learning regulation can be understood using multi-channel data. We analyzed the behaviors of 189 students to identify a range of self-regulated learning (SRL) profiles that lead to different achievement in a large-scale undergraduate course seeing how students' SRL unfold during the course, which helps understand the complicated cyclical nature of SRL. We identified three SRL profiles by administrating and analyzing the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) three times. We looked at how students adopt different SRL profiles as the course progressed through process mining and clustering techniques to clarify the cyclical nature of SRL. We demonstrated how process mining was used to identify process patterns in self-regulated learning events as captured. Analyzing sequential patterns indicated differences in students' process models. It showed the added value of taking the order of learning activities into account, contributing to theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Multidisciplinary approaches to learning analytics (LA) have the potential to provide important insights into student learning beyond interactions within learning management systems (LMS). In this paper we demonstrate the benefits of such an approach by proposing a framework that adds the contextual elements of task design, tools and technologies and datasets to established LA processes. Our framework was developed as a design science research (DSR) artifact, working with teachers of English at two Swedish secondary schools. The results highlight the importance of valid task design for generating relevant, useful insights and provide a basis for simplifying and automating in-situ LA that can be used by teachers in their everyday work. The study also provided important insights for the field of online research and comprehension (ORC) both in relation to methodology and how students engage with a task that requires locating and synthesizing information on the open Internet in a second language. Abstract: Empathy is an elementary skill for daily interactions and for professional communication, agile teamwork and successful leadership and thus elementary for educational curricula. However, educational organizations face difficulties in providing the boundary conditions necessary for their students to develop empathy skills due to the lack of individual support in traditional large-scale and growing distance-learning scenarios. Drawing on cognitive dissonance theory, we propose an adaptive empathy learning tool that helps students develop their ability to react to other people’s observed experiences through individual feedback in large-scale or distance learning scenarios. Based on a design science research project, we propose a set of design principles and instantiate and evaluate them with our prototype Eva in an online experiment with 65 students. The findings suggest that an adaptive empathy learning tool that follows our design principles is a promising approach to individually support students in their ability to react to other people’s observed abilities in traditional learning scenarios. Abstract: Countries around the world have had to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak with limited information and confronting many uncertainties. Their ability to be agile and adaptive has been stressed, particularly in regard to the timing of policy measures, the level of decision centralization, the autonomy of decisions and the balance between change and stability. In this contribution we use our observations of responses to COVID-19 to reflect on agility and adaptive governance and provide tools to evaluate it after the dust has settled. Whereas agility relates mainly to the speed of response within given structures, adaptivity implies system-level changes throughout government. Existing institutional structures and tools can enable adaptivity and agility, which can be complimentary approaches. However, agility sometimes conflicts with adaptability. Our analysis points to the paradoxical nature of adaptive governance. Indeed, successful adaptive governance calls for both decision speed and sound analysis, for both centralized and decentralized decision-making, for both innovation and bureaucracy, and both science and politics. Abstract: Despite a growing body of research about the design and use of Smart Personal Assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Assistant, little is known about their ability to help educators offering individual support in large-scale learning environments. Smart Personal Assistant ecosystems empower educators to develop their own agents without deep technological knowledge. The objective of this paper is to design and validate a method that helps educators to create Smart Personal Assistants for their learning environments. Using a design science research approach, we first gather requirements from students and educators as well as from information systems and education theory. Next, we create an alpha version of our method and evaluate it with a focus group before we instantiate our artifact in an everyday learning environment. The findings indicate that our method is able to empower educators to design Smart Personal Assistants that significantly improve students’ learning success. Collapse

Abstract: Digitalization triggers a shift in the compositions of skills and knowledge needed for students in their future work life. Hence, higher order thinking skills are becoming more important to solve future challenges. One subclass of these skills, which contributes significantly to communication, collaboration and problem-solving, is the skill of how to argue in a structured, reflective and well-formed way. However, educational organizations face difficulties in providing the boundary conditions necessary to develop this skill, due to increasing student numbers paired with financial constraints. In this short paper, we present the first steps of our design science research project on how to design an adaptive IT-tool that helps students develop their argumentation skill through formative feedback in large-scale lectures. Based on scientific learning theory and user interviews, we propose preliminary requirements and design principles for an adaptive argumentation learning tool.
