Abstract: Models play an important role in systems analysis and design (SAD). A diagrammatic model is defined as a mapping from a domain to a visual representation in such a way that relevant information is preserved to meet a specific goal. So far, cognitive research on diagram criteria in relation to task performance has been fragmented. The aim of this paper is to (1) consolidate research on the cognitive processing steps involved during understanding and task performance with diagrams, (2) consolidate corresponding criteria for such diagrams to best support cognitive processing, and (3) demonstrate the support effective diagrams provide for performing SAD tasks. Addressing the first aim, we develop a theoretical cognitive framework of task performance with diagrams called CogniDia. It integrates different cognitive theories from research on diagrams in software engineering and information systems. Regarding the second aim, we review the literature to organize criteria for effective cognitive processing of diagrams. We identify research gaps on verbal and task processing. Regarding the third aim, we use the theoretical cognitive framework to investigate how diagrams support the SAD process effectively. Collapse

Abstract: Conceptual models serve as an important means to help IS professionals grasp a holistic picture of an information system. However, in most cases, the use of only one model is not sufficient to provide this information. For that reason, pieces of information are represented using multiple models and grammars, which partially overlap. The literature is still silent on how this overlap can be effectively presented to the users. Our research aims to close this gap. We plan to conduct an eye-tracking experiment to investigate our hypotheses. The results will contribute to the theory of combined ontological completeness and overlap and provide practical advice on how the connection between multiple models should be presented. Collapse

Abstract: Both language and image are critical for the grasp of information embedded in online reviews. While a large quantity of research has focused on the role of textual features and visual features separately, the specific role of similarity between textual and visual information in online review evaluations (e.g., review usefulness and review enjoyment) remains unaddressed. Thus, drawing on dual coding theory, this study attempts to investigate the impacts of textual and visual features on review evaluations by employing the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling and Google Vision API's web detection techniques in the context of online restaurant review (ORR). Moreover, the moderating role of semantic similarity is examined in the relationships between textual/visual features and ORR evaluations. It is believed that this study could provide implications on information comprehension, draw consumer interest, and provide suggestions for restaurant managers to tune levels of review evaluation in a proper manner. Abstract: The use of information systems and the rise of new learning concepts have changed the way individuals are acquiring knowledge in organizational, educational and private contexts. Recently, video tutorials have become a widely-used instrument for learning and successful platforms emerged, offering massive open online courses based on video content. With the existence of different learning technologies the question arises: How these media formats affect the learning performance of individuals? We introduce interactive videos as a new media format and compare this technology to hypertext documents in an educational context. Our results from an experiment with 130 participants reveal that the learning quality can be signiﬁcantly increased when interactive videos are used to acquire procedural knowledge. However, we did not observe any effect on time effort. Collapse

Abstract: Interactive data visualization has become an important tool for business executives in monitoring key performance indicators, analyzing business process data, and managing individual and organizational performances. One of the key features in interactive data visualization is that users have direct control over how information is presented during the decision-making process. Few studies have examined how users choose visualization formats in such an environment. In this study, we investigate how cognitive style, spatial ability, and task difficulty affect the preference and choice of visualization formats and how the chosen visualization format in turn affects decision accuracy and confidence. Our results show that the choice of visualization format is affected by a user's cognitive style and task difficulty. While decision performances in accuracy and confidence are affected by task difficulty, spatial ability, and visualization format, they are largely not affected by the interactions between visualization format and cognitive style, spatial ability, and task difficulty. Abstract: The Method of Loci (MOL) is a mnemonic strategy to memorize declarative knowledge. In the late 90s researchers started to experimentally analyze the MOL by providing their participants a virtual world. This digital environment was meant to serve the users as a template for their personal memory palace. Past studies differed in central aspects of their experimental design. One difference is that earlier studies integrated the learning content in multiple and different ways. The design of the learning content is an essential aspect and should make a difference based on cognitive theories. This study analyzes if participants perform better with virtually presented learning content or if the MOL works better when users have to imagine the content. Results encourage future concepts of the virtual MOL to implement the learning content in the environment. Collapse

Abstract: Online product presentations, which help consumers obtain product information, have an important role in shopping websites. Two major information types, visual and textual information, govern the modalities of consumers in acquiring product-related information from most online product presentations. Previous studies have debated on which of these two information types can enhance the shopping performance of consumers. However, these debates have resulted in dichotomous outcomes. In this regard, the factor(s) that contribute to such divided results must be examined. In this study, we use the level of processing theory and information load to examine the effect of online product presentations on the online shopping performance of consumers. A laboratory experiment has also been conducted. The results of data analysis show that information load has a significant moderating role on the effects of online product presentations. The experimental results show that visual-based online product presentation has a greater effect on the shopping performance of consumers in high information load condition, whereas textual-based online product presentation provides greater performance advantages in low information load condition. Finally, the implications of these findings to both academics and practitioners are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Creative performance is a fundamental form of knowledge creation in knowledge intensive organizations. While some studies emphasize the importance of diversity on creative performance, others argue for the role of socially cohesive groups with strong third-party connections. To address the gaps in the literature, this study examines the influence of three attributes of dyadic ties (i.e., network diversity, social cohesion, and communication media mix) on creative performance. From the knowledge, social and technology perspectives, we empirically tested our model using a social network methodology with dyads working on knowledge intensive tasks. The results suggest that network diversity is positively associated with creative performance, and moderate level of social cohesion is preferred for creative performance. The findings also show that the influence of social cohesion on creative performance is weakened by the degree of communication media mix. Implications for research and practice are discussed with respect to creativity in organizations. Collapse

Abstract: Nowadays, social media has become an important tool for individuals to communicate with others. Recent statistics show that a large number of people spend plenty of time on social network websites daily, which may lead to some potential social and psychological problems. In this study, we define the new concept of Social Network Services (SNS) addiction, and claim that it is different from other online addictions (e.g., online shopping addiction, online gambling addiction and online pornography addiction) studied before. Then we give a reasonable explanation for the formation of SNS addiction, and emphasize the mediating role of SNS use habit in this process. Last but not least, we posit that message characteristics: message richness and message synchronicity can amplify or weaken the relationship between SNS use habit and SNS addiction. A survey will be conducted to empirically test the hypotheses in the theoretical model in future study. Collapse
