Abstract: Blockchain technology is playing an increasingly important role in modern business. We aim to study the impact of blockchain innovations on firm performance and how firms respond strategically to the threat of disruption from the blockchain. Based on disruptive innovation theory and resource-based view, we propose that peer firms' blockchain innovations could stimulate the focal firm's blockchain innovations as the blockchain innovations improve firm performance. We empirically examine one antecedent and possible outcomes of blockchain innovations with blockchain-related technology patents data from 2001 to 2020. Results from a fixed effect panel analysis and textual analysis offer theoretical insights into the role of blockchain as a new disruptive innovation and provide firms with suggestions on blockchain innovations. Abstract: Recent advances in Digital Technologies (DTs) have transformed various aspects of how the sports industry operates and competes. Common applications of DTs on-and off-site the field of play include, for example, analytics solutions to improve players' performance, pricing predictions for ticket sales, or digital platforms to interact with fans. DTs further facilitate shared digital capabilities, thereby allowing for the integration of new stakeholders and thus giving rise to new digital ecosystems in the sports industry. However, Information Systems' (IS) research on DTs in the sports industry is still nascent. Hence, the role of DTs for the sports industry is not entirely understood. Therefore, we analyze how DTs shape the sports industry based on a concept-driven literature review. The analysis of 16 publications yields four groups of benefits that can be achieved by the usage of DTs for the stakeholders embedded in the digital ecosystem of the sports industry. Collapse

Abstract: Given the traceability benefits provided by digital-oriented infrastructure, consumption data shows promising prospects as a means of transforming the manner by which companies design and market their products and streamline processes in an inventive fashion. This study examines the role of consumption-based analytics in analyzing the adoption of innovative products (i.e., audiobooks) in the digital content market. By scrutinizing dataset containing multi-dimensional e-book reading records, we investigated the association between consumption patterns and audiobook adoption. The findings derived from empirical analysis indicate that inferior completion performance, concentrated reading, and anytime reading patterns motivate the intention to adopt audiobooks. These patterns, however, are in discord with standard preference exhibited by purchase-intensive mainstream customers. The finding suggests that the adoption of innovative products emanates from niche market with unfulfilled needs. We draw implications for the creative digital economy, in which consumer behaviors constantly evolve with the continuous influx of innovative technologies. Collapse

Abstract: In this theory development paper, we develop new IS-enabled capabilities for firms to survive and thrive in complex business ecosystems facing hypercompetition and digital disruptions. Complex business ecosystems operate in either: (1) the region of emergent complexity, or (2) edge of discontinuity. Survival challenges differ across the two regions. The first region experiences hypercompetitive dynamics. Firms have to coevolve with dynamically changing product market positions. The second experiences threats of digital disruption. Firms have to redefine their roles and relationships, as the existing ecosystem will likely experience a phase transition, face catastrophic collapse, creating a new, qualitatively different ecosystem. We propose an IS-enabled complexity vigilance capability for firms to detect the existing region of complexity and invoke the appropriate strategy. We propose the IS-enabled coevolution capability and IS-enabled redefinition capability for coping with the two regions respectively and explain how our IS-enabled capabilities increase firms’ chances of surviving and thriving. Abstract: Disruptive eco-innovations that replace existing unsustainable modes of transportation could contribute to achieve substantial improvements in environmental sustainability. Electric vehicles (EVs) have the potential to provide a more sustainable means of individual mobility, but, thus far, customer adoption remains relatively low. Following disruptive innovations theory developed by Christensen, the disruptive potential of EVs can be realized if their performance on traditional attributes that customer’s value improves. Here, information systems can play a key role. In this paper, we use a large scale (n = 1461) empirical investigation to examine which attributes must be addressed and assess the ability of existing mobile applications (apps) to do so. Our results indicate that apps contribute to a more reliable and convenient EV-user experience. We shed light on the role of apps in connecting the vehicle, the infrastructure and the user and in creating a digital eco-system that enhances the diffusion of EVs. Collapse

Abstract: The software industry faces a fundamental change from delivering software On-premises to delivering software On-demand. Well-established companies have to shift their focus from the (still) profitable On-premises market to an, as yet unprofitable, On-demand market to survive. This requires strategies to handle the transformation process. Based on five case studies and following Christensen’s disruptive innovation theory, we learn the successful strategies that software companies can adopt to handle a change from On-premises to On-demand delivery. These strategies include the general ideas that Christensen proposes and separate extensions for the software industry, suggesting an emerging area of IS research. Collapse

Abstract: Internet and digitization are fundamentally changing and disrupting newspaper companies’ traditional operating models. Disruptive innovation theory offers explanations for why companies succeed or fail to respond to disruptive innovations. This study builds on disruptive innovation theory by ascertaining the role of dynamic capabilities in the performance of response to digital disruption. Empirical results suggest that first-order dynamic capabilities that are created by changing, extending, or adapting a firm’s existing resources, processes, and values are positively associated with building digital platform capabilities, and that these capabilities impact the performance of response to digital disruption. For information systems (IS) researchers, this study clarifies the role of first-order dynamic capabilities in responding to digital disruption. For IS practice, it helps managers to focus on the most promising factors for creating first-order dynamic capabilities, for building digital platform capabilities, and for reinventing their core functions to accelerate digitization. Computing devices are no longer items that we use in our homes and places of work and carry in our bags and pockets. We can now wear those devices. This article focuses on this development. In doing so, it explores old and recent developments in wearable technology with a focus on their current and potential use in the ﬁeld of healthcare and medical education. It also highlights the challenges that are likely to face this technology. Moreover, it attempts to provide some insights into the prospects of this technology from the theoretical perspective of the theory of disruptive innovations as proposed by Clayton Christensen and his colleagues from Harvard Business School.
