Abstract: ☆ This editorial opinion paper provides a subjective viewpoint on the potential impact of generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT in the domains of education, business, and society. Its objective is to offer initial guidance on the opportunities, challenges, and implications associated with these technologies. It is worth noting that, given its nature as an editorial opinion piece, this submission has not undergone a formal double-blind review process but has been reviewed informally by appropriate experts.Transformative artificially intelligent tools, such as ChatGPT, designed to generate sophisticated text indistinguishable from that produced by a human, are applicable across a wide range of contexts. The technology presents opportunities as well as, often ethical and legal, challenges, and has the potential for both positive and negative impacts for organisations, society, and individuals. Offering multi-disciplinary insight into some of these, this article brings together 43 contributions from experts in fields such as computer science, marketing, information systems, education, policy, hospitality and tourism, management, publishing, and nursing. The contributors acknowledge ChatGPT's capabilities to enhance productivity and suggest that it is likely to offer 1 Equal contributions Y.K. Nevertheless, they also consider its limitations, disruptions to practices, threats to privacy and security, and consequences of biases, misuse, and misinformation. However, opinion is split on whether ChatGPT's use should be restricted or legislated. Drawing on these contributions, the article identifies questions requiring further research across three thematic areas: knowledge, transparency, and ethics; digital transformation of organisations and societies; and teaching, learning, and scholarly research. The avenues for further research include: identifying skills, resources, and capabilities needed to handle generative AI; examining biases of generative AI attributable to training datasets and processes; exploring business and societal contexts best suited for generative AI implementation; determining optimal combinations of human and generative AI for various tasks; identifying ways to assess accuracy of text produced by generative AI; and uncovering the ethical and legal issues in using generative AI across different contexts. Abstract: The growing availability of data and the emergence of business analytics ecosystems offer possibilities for companies developing innovative business models. However, the disruptive impact of these business models on society is not always judged favourably. This paper explores the growing tensions in the relationship between disruptive Big Data companies and society through the lens of legitimacy – a judgement about the fit and propriety of an entity, such as a company, to society. The study is based on four instrumental cases where Big Data organisations were faced with challenges to their legitimacy. The findings elaborate how digital transformations require companies to understand and manage how much to disrupt and how much to conform to social norms and values. Big Data businesses face a dynamic and paradoxical tension between the potential costs and benefits of their disruptive business models. The topic of legitimacy management is also addressed, drawing out implications for practice. Collapse

Abstract: A born-global-digital firm belongs to the group of firms that apply and develop digital technologies to achieve early internationalization. However, there might be different types of bottlenecks related to foreign market entries and the development of digital services affecting those markets that limit such firms’ global activities. In this work, we divide these bottlenecks into technical, strategic, and cultural forms. This multi-case study examines the impact of those bottlenecks and how that might be overcome. Abstract: The aim of this systematic literature review (SLR) is to explore how Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) digital technologies are transforming the healthcare sector. Peer-reviewed, full-text research papers published between January 2016 and April 2021, which focused on data-driven healthcare, health data management systems, and the disruptive role of digital technologies in healthcare were retrieved from three electronic databases, namely PubMed Central, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and MEDLINE. Articles included in the SLR were identified and selected using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. Three main themes were identified from 84 research papers included in the SLR, namely, (i) digital technologies driving the transformation of healthcare, (ii) the impact of digital transformation on healthcare, and (iii) areas of transformation in healthcare. The results showed that technological innovations can mitigate the impact of unequal distribution of healthcare services, reduce healthcare costs, improve the quality of care, and the quality of life for patients and healthcare professionals. Abstract: We propose a research agenda on digital innovation units (DIUs) that refines the current -mainly descriptive-body of knowledge. Receiving great attention in practice, DIUs are dedicated organizational units that support and partly drive digital transformation in incumbent firms by leveraging new structures and practices that differ from those existing in the organization, aiming to promote various aspects of digital innovation. Utilizing DIU knowledge from a theoretical literature review, the resulting research agenda assists in structuring the field by synthesizing and connecting the partly isolated knowledge chunks. We illustrate a coherent picture of theorizing DIUs using Whetten's building blocks of theory. Researchers can draw on our findings to understand the emerging phenomenon of DIUs and use them as a stencil for future DIU research. It simultaneously may guide practitioners to understand the nature of DIUs and their role in a firm's digital transformation journey. Collapse

Abstract: Regulating how digital platforms use algorithms to determine and control content displayed to their users is both a controversial topic and an important societal challenge. Existing research acknowledges institutional tussles around regulating how digital platforms use algorithms to determine and control content. However, we lack research showing how the development of regulation unfolds. We build on data from a longitudinal discourse analysis of 410 media articles and 483 policy and industry documents to study two cases of algorithmic control regulation in Australia. The first involves algorithmic control for content display, the second for content moderation. We develop a process model of institutional work towards regulation of algorithmic control. It captures the institutional tussles between governments, digital platforms and third parties as each expresses their perspective on legitimate forms of algorithmic control and shapes the process and outcome of regulation. Building on our model, we discuss the dynamics of regulation development in light of the constellation of actors and their power position in the process. We further consider the regulatory outcome and highlight future research questions that build on our findings. Collapse

Abstract: This paper engages with the emerging field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance wishing to contribute to the relevant literature from three angles grounded in international human rights law, Law and Technology, Science and Technology Studies (STS) and theories of technology. Focusing on the shift from ethics to governance, it offers a bird-eye overview of the developments in AI governance, focusing on the comparison between ethical principles and binding rules for the governance of AI, and critically reviewing the latest regulatory developments. Secondly, focusing on the role of human rights, it takes the argument that human rights offer a more robust and effective framework a step further, arguing for the necessity to extend human rights obligations to also directly apply to private actors in the context of AI governance. Abstract: Despite the relevance and maturity of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) research field, no studies exist that exhaustively summarize the current body of knowledge, focusing on the development of the field over its entire timespan. The paper at hand addresses this research gap and presents an exhaustive literature review on the CIO research field using main path analysis. We identify the central papers in CIO research and eight main research streams by quantitatively and qualitatively analyzing 466 papers. We find that established research streams, e.g., 'Evolving role of the CIO' and 'CIO hierarchical position and relationships' as well as recently emerging research streams, e.g., 'CIO as business enabler' and 'CIOs and IT security,' draw growing attention. Based on our findings, we develop promising further avenues for research in the CIO field. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we explore prominent contemporary technology trajectories in the software industry and how they are expected to influence the work in the software industry. Consequently, we build on cultural lag theory to analyze how technological changes affect work in software development. We present the results from a series of expert interviews that were analyzed using the Gioia method. Moreover, we identify a set of technology trends pertinent to software development from which we derive four main changes affecting the future of work in software development: (1) a shift toward scalable solutions, (2) increased emphasis on data, (3) convergence of IT and non-IT industries, and (4) the cloud as the dominant computing paradigm. Accordingly, this study contains insights into how technology (as an element of material culture) influences non-material culture, as exemplified by the work involved in software development.
