Understanding the Digital Resilience of Physicians during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Empirical Study

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgent need for healthcare entities to develop resilient strategies to cope with disruptions caused by the pandemic. This study focuses on the digital resilience of certified physicians who adopted an online healthcare community (OHC) to acquire patients and conduct telemedicine services during the pandemic. We synthesize the resilience literature and identify two effects of digital resilience-the resistance effect and the recovery effect. We use a proprietary dataset that matches online and offline data sources to study the digital resilience of physicians. A difference-in-differences (DID) analysis shows that physicians who adopted an OHC had strong resistance and recovery effects during the pandemic. Remarkably, after the COVID-19 outbreak, these physicians had 35.0% less reduction in medical consultations in the immediate period and 31.0% more bounce-back in the subsequent period as compared to physicians who did not adopt the OHC. We further analyze the sources of physicians' digital resilience by distinguishing between new and existing patients from both online and offline channels. Our subgroup analysis shows that, in general, digital resilience is more pronounced when physicians have a higher online reputation rating or have more positive interactions with patients on the OHC platform, providing further support for the mechanisms underlying digital resilience. Our research has significant theoretical and managerial implications beyond the context of the pandemic. Collapse

Abstract: In the current era of digital transformations, numerous organizations integrate information and communication technologies (ICTs) into their core operations. However, such transformations can lead to novel risks that have to be governed in the face of disruptions. The emergence of a new risk landscape has given rise to new concepts aimed at safeguarding ICT-based operations. One of these is digital resilience (DR), a complex concept that has recently received attention from academia and regulatory bodies. However, prior work has often studied it inconsistently and offered different suggestions on how to build DR. To foster a comprehensive understanding of DR within information systems (IS), we have conducted a systematic literature review and conceptualized the problem by drawing on intellectual capital (IC) theory. We contribute to research and organizational practice by offering a novel framework with three main sub-capabilities and a comprehensive range of supporting micro-foundation, which unveils areas for future research. Abstract: This study focuses on digital operational resilience (DOR) to ensure the stability of increasingly integrated digital services, which is currently receiving heightened attention due to ongoing environmental crisis situations. Researchers often relate DOR to planning and preparation activities, such as business continuity or disaster recovery planning. However, some types of organisationssuch as scale-upstend to lack elaborate plans for crisis situations, mainly driven by their rapid growth and resource constraints. Such firms seem to regularly engage in non-routine responses to overcome sudden disruptions, namely heuristics (i.e., swift decisions) and improvisation (i.e., swift actions). We present preliminary results of an in-depth case study demonstrating how a FinTech scale-up applied heuristics and improvisation for its crisis response. We show how the consequences of such non-routine responses go beyond immediate crisis resolution, incurring either negative effects that need to be managed (coping debt) or opportunities to be leveraged (new/revised business processes). Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how digital organizational resilience was a key to digital transformation success in the public sector of Denmark. Using a historical research method, we analyze the information systems (IS) history from 1998 to 2019 at all three levels of the public sector in Denmark. This study discovers the historical events regarding the barriers and hindrances to digital transformation in Denmark and shows how resilience enabled continuity in the transformation. Using significant events in the history of Denmark becoming a digitalized nation, we find a pattern of what constitutes digital organizational resilience in e-government: first, there are new ways to strategize digitalization, second, there is a collaborative strategy in execution across the public sector that envelopes the ability to learn from overcoming barriers and hindrances, and third, there is an organizational resilience path that iterates action, collaboration, and learning. Digital resilience has previously been studied in the context of individual learning and cyber security. The pattern found in the historical account is a promising basis for understanding and achieving resilience in a transformative digitalization strategy in the public sector. Collapse

Abstract: The growing complexity of systems, the increasing intensity of their use, and the greater prominence of technology in supporting organizational activities has meant that information systems (IS) professionals in organizations have to go beyond offering routine task-related support when working with their non-IS colleagues. For organizations to see IS professionals as effective, they have to carry out empathic behaviors such as sharing their IT knowledge with their non-IS colleagues and taking the initiative to minimize inconveniences during IS projects. Drawing from the organizational citizenship behavior concept, we develop a multilevel research model to examine how behaviors that IS professionals perform influence IS departments' effectiveness. Using data from more than 1,000 respondents working in the global finance industry, we conducted both cross-level and unit-level analyses and found results that support our arguments. Our results deepen the extent to which we understand the role that IS professionals play in supporting post-adoption IS use and digitally empowering business units while also performing their traditional roles. Abstract: The Delphi method is widely used in the fields of education, society, and medicine to achieve consensus and convergence of expert opinions. However, the Delphi method is limited in terms of the temporal and spatial issues to elicit the convergence of the experts’ views; therefore, many studies have aimed to modify its design to improve expert participation for decision convergence. This study proposes a theoretical framework for the synchronous Delphi method that integrates the interaction of the experts to ensure the convergence of the member function of decision making. A case study adopting the proposed method was conducted to synthesize the key factors needed for IT experts in Taiwan to use server virtualization technology. The Software Usability Measurement Inventory (SUMI) was used to analyze its usability. The result showed that the method’s scores in efficiency, affect, learnability and global (general satisfaction) were higher than 60, which was 10% higher than average. In addition, the scores for helpfulness and controllability were 7% higher than average. Collapse

Abstract: High-profile cybersecurity incidents, such as the 2019 Capital One data breach and the 2017 Equifax breach, have engendered doubts about firms’ trustworthiness and resulted cybersecurity becoming a critical risk factor firms must address. Breaches can precipitate extreme consequences for affected firms’ managers, shareholders, and customers. Unsurprisingly, data breaches represent IT leaders’ biggest concern. In this paper, we report on a qualitative field study in which we interviewed C-level executives and IT consultants to investigate cybersecurity concerns and factors that influence adoption decisions for cybersecurity. We found that the traditional technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework does not fully capture the range of issues in the cybersecurity context. Thus, we propose a new extended TOE framework that pertains specifically to cybersecurity-adoption decisions. This extended framework includes new dimensions, cyber catalysts, practice standards, and new factors under the traditional technology, organization, and environment dimensions. Collapse

Abstract: This study introduces a multi-step methodology for analyzing social media data during the post-disaster recovery phase of Hurricane Sandy. Its outputs include identification of the people who experienced the disaster, estimates of their physical location, assessments of the topics they discussed post-disaster, analysis of the tract-level relationships between the topics people discussed and tract-level internal attributes, and a comparison of these outputs to those of people who did not experience the disaster. Faith-based, community, assets, and financial topics emerged as major topics of discussion within the context of the disaster experience. The differences between predictors of these topics compared to those of people who did not experience the disaster were investigated in depth, revealing considerable differences among vulnerable populations. The use of this methodology as a new Machine Learning Algorithm to analyze large volumes of social media data is advocated in the conclusion. Collapse
