Abstract: Though human-like design can increase favorable social behaviors like familiarity and acceptance, it can also question the technology’s effectiveness, rationality, and functionality. With capabilities that allow technology to become more and more human-like, researchers and practitioners continue to delve over the efficacy and deployment of humanness in design. In this research paper, we measure positive and negative perceptions towards different levels of humanness among an emerging form of digital character: the virtual influencer. In doing so, we assess the efficacy of human-like design among virtual influencers by manipulating their visual realism and measuring the effect of this manipulation on their credibility and persuasiveness. Our experimental design also allows us to explore the existence of the uncanny valley in a novel technological context. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we respond to Grover and Lyytinen (2022). We agree with them that the advent of the digital age is calling for a reconsideration of the role of theory and theorizing. We also think their proposal does not go far enough. The time is ripe to question the role of theory in our field more fundamentally. We propose to instead focus on establishing IS research as a platform through which we can collect, organize, and provide access to digital trace data from various sources to analyze contemporary socio-technical phenomena. We believe that such a move allows us to more fully unleash the unique socio-technical competences of our field in the digital age. Collapse

Abstract: Consumers play an increasingly central role in born digital organisations, including driving new approaches to consumer interaction, communication, and marketing. However, we know little about how born digital organise internally to manage and respond to consumer demands. In this paper, we studied an organisation providing online travel services where its aim was to reorganise internally, in relation to consumers, through developing a set of ‘search’ practices. The role of search is particularly salient for born digitals, giving rise to new roles and expertise where or­ ganisations attempt to pre-empt user actions. Through qualitative research, we show how a born digital organisation creates new practices that we label pre-emptive, reactive, reflective and adaptive. Our main finding is that rapidly and constantly reconfiguring practices, what these new experts call ‘constructive disruption’, is essential for born digitals to manage relationships with consumers. Our paper contributes by providing a better understanding of practices within born digital organisations, and specifically the practices born digitals use to navigate unpredictable emerging changes and produce constant novelty for customers. We also contribute to the concept of search and provide examples of how it might be employed to better understand digital organising and digital transformation. Collapse

Abstract: As the environment continues to deteriorate, for managers, the means of shifting consumer behavior to "green" is urgently needed. Information disclosure as a tactic to promote green consumption has been widely studied, which typically stimulates demand for new green products through cost disclosure. In contrast, the impact of environmental benefit information disclosure on green consumption, especially on online reuse platforms, remains to be ascertained. In this study, we examine the economic effects of a green disclosure nudge through a natural experiment. Drawing on daily sales data, we find that the green disclosure nudge can stimulate consumer demand and generate economic benefits. We provide suggestive evidence that this positive effect stems from an increase in consumers' perceptions of the functional and symbolic value of used products, respectively. In addition, exploratory analysis shows that the nudge may have potential social benefits. The findings provide practical and theoretical implications for promoting green consumption. Collapse

Abstract: This study presents an Information Systems (IS) research methodology for the conduct of critical research into sustainable development that encompasses the objectives of socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable economic growth. The specific context is the application of critical research in the problem definition phase of IS Design Science Research for sustainable development. The paper guides IS research through problem scenarios of unsustainable development where power can distort truth and corrupt the public discourse in the furtherance of their ambitions. The methodology provides a structured approach to engage in inquiry of topics which are by their nature, deceptive and opaque. The methodology enables research inquiry encompassing societal topics, macro-social issues related to sustainable development and the application of nomothetic inquiry to address systemic problems. The paper concludes with illustrative examples of outcomes from the application of the prescribed methodology. The study provides an IS response to systemic social and environmental challenges by identifying the routes to transformation which in turn inform the design of IS solutions. Consequently, the study lays a foundation for IS engagement in socially responsible design science research. Collapse

Abstract: Growing interest in decentralized web has brought into focus the need to furnish decentralized digital identities that could uproot the dominant centralized solutions, such as single logins provided by social media platforms. However, these multiple efforts to put the end user in the center of identity management rarely relate to individuals' psychological needs related to identity enactment and construction, diminishing their chances for widespread adoption. This paper proposes a network formalization of identity theories that incorporates the specifics of identity processes online. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented surge in digital communication and collaboration. While a rich body of knowledge exists on IS use, our understanding of changes in post-adoptive use behaviour regarding communication and collaboration is comparatively limited. Existing models assume decreasing growth rates over time and are not designed to capture spikes in use behaviour such as the one observed during the pandemic. In this mixed methods study, we propose a hybrid model of sensemaking and post-adoptive communication and collaboration use that explains changes in use behaviour and outlines the influence of external trigger events. Based on real-world data from MS Teams, we show that individual feature use varies over time, with an increasing growth rate triggered by COVID-19. To understand drivers for the heterogeneous changes, we further conduct qualitative interviews. We find habits were deliberately altered during COVID-19 and replaced with new intentions through sensemaking. We derive propositions that may encourage further research into the subject. Extended knowledge of post-adoptive behaviour and its triggers assists practitioners in adjusting to the new normal or reacting to new situations beyond COVID-19. Collapse

Abstract: Persons with Parkinson's disease (PwPs) may have difficulty participating in social activities due to motor and non-motor symptoms that may lead to social isolation and loneliness. This paper addresses how to manage social isolation and loneliness among PwPs using digital solutions. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have the potential to address social isolation and loneliness, but there are no current solutions that specifically target these issues among PwPs. In this paper, we present an ongoing project based on design science research (DSR) combined with a user-centered approach to identify challenges, requirements, and design objectives. The empirical work includes data from interviews and focus groups with PwPs and healthcare professionals. Based on the empirical material, we formulated design principles on identified challenges and requirements, which were instantiated into a high-fidelity prototype. This initial cycle serves as a foundation for ongoing improvements and evaluations in a continuous DSR process. Collapse

Abstract: This study investigates the effect of social media (SM) use purposes and user characteristics on individual psychological wellbeing (PWB) during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Informed by the uses and gratifications theory and PWB research, this study analyzed survey data collected from 282 SM users aged 18 through 59 from a minority-serving university in the United States in March-April 2020. Our quantitative data analysis showed that social media can be used to improve the quality of personal experiences during the COVID-19 crisis through three mechanisms—connectedness (i.e., social), engagement (i.e., collaborative), and entertainment (i.e., hedonic). However, the effect varied by gender, SM usage level, and individual concern about COVID-19 risk. The findings contribute to the literature and offer implications in technology use for enhancing public mental health during crises. Collapse
