Abstract: Since the turn of the millennium, the notion of enterprise content management (ECM) has been an umbrella term for all the technological and managerial capabilities required to manage every type of unstructured information over its entire lifecycle. Because the term “ECM” characterizes a very broad approach to digital information management, its precise definition challenges researchers and practitioners alike. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the use of the notion of ECM in practice. Grounded in a latent semantic analysis (LSA) of 1,083 case studies published by ECM vendors, the study identifies and characterizes twelve key topics that dominate the ECM discussion, from capture and scanning to archiving and backup. The results can help information systems (IS) researchers to gain a more profound understanding of the ECM concept, to distinguish it from related approaches to digital information management, and to reconsider and realign their ECM research agendas. Practitioners gain an overview of potentially interesting ECM topics that can trigger and guide their future information-management efforts. Collapse

Abstract: The choice of the right business model is a crucial success factor, particularly in fast evolving industries like the software industry. Business model configuration from scratch but also the monitoring of the business model once it is configured represent important criteria for software companies to establish their business idea at the market. This paper presents an architecture design and its prototypical implementation of a business model assistance system that facilitates companies in the software industry to compose their business model as well as to carry out modifications on an already existing business model through business model monitoring. Therefore, users are provided feedback about the quality of their current business model by the use of KPIs as feedback parameters. The prototype has been developed based on previously carried out research work concerning the definition of business model elements in the software industry and the derivation of a software industry value chain. Abstract: The software industry is changing as a result of the rising influence both of packaged and of Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS), but the change trajectory of the industry is still not well understood. This paper aims to contribute to clarifying software industry evolution through a longitudinal study, using Industry Change Trajectory Theory to explain and predict the evolution of the Content Management Systems (CMS) segment and the extent to which its results can be generalized to the overall software industry. Our data analysis shows that CMS players are experiencing a modification of their segments’ change trajectory. While McGahan in 2004 recognized that the software industry was in a creative change trajectory, it has subsequently faced strong competition on its core assets, (i.e. applications) and the empirical results of our longitudinal study from 2002 to 2007 show the CMS segment is now in a radical change trajectory, due to the rapid obsolescence of its core activities. Changes affecting the segment include the continuous development of CMS applications, the faster extension of functions for FLOSS CMS than for packaged CMS, the diffusion of the practice of providing services as well as delivering of software solutions.
