Abstract: Through the increasing diffusion of digital technology, also traditional areas such as the automotive context are expected to implement digital innovation. In these established ecosystems, demands for new digital capabilities increase, which could potentially be satisfied by actors from the IT ecosystem. However, it is unclear, which of these actors engage in foreign terrains and how they embed themselves in the established ecosystem. Analyzing rich data from both the IT and the automotive ecosystem, we find that migration of IT actors is associated with influence and embeddedness in the IT ecosystem and that migrating IT actors take essential positions in the automotive ecosystem subsequently. We complement IS ecosystem research by going beyond the dominant intra-ecosystem perspective. Furthermore, we contribute to digital transformation research by underscoring the increasing power of IT actors across contexts. Finally, we inform incumbent managers by revealing which IT actors might become valuable partners or hostile threats. Collapse

Abstract: Because software is fungible, has low marginal replication costs, and requires relatively high levels of initial investment to develop, understanding how IT-producing firms protect and leverage value from their research and development (R&D) investments is important. We examine how the positioning of IT-producing firms within their networks of strategic alliances moderates profits from R&D investments. We posit that alliances with IT-consuming firms generate relation-specific rents that, in turn, protect the value of R&D investments by making software innovations difficult for rivals to appropriate. Among IT-producing firms, we make a distinction between software consulting and services firms and software package-product firms. Our analyses of 464 IT-producing firms for the 14-year period 1996-2009 suggest that IT-producing firms' returns on R&D investments increase with alliance ties to IT-consuming firms. We also find that alliances with IT-consuming firms have a more beneficial effect on R&D investment returns for software consulting and services firms than for software package-product firms. Our findings yield nuanced insights into how IT-producing firms should position themselves within a network of alliances with IT-consuming firms. We discuss implications for research and practice. Abstract: The emergence of big data brings both opportunities and challenges to high-tech enterprises. How to keep competitive advantages and improve innovation performance is important for enterprises in big data environment. Except from organizational learning ability and the use of advanced technology, the corporate governance also plays an important role in the process of enterprise’s innovation practice. This article creatively combines with the insights of internal and external governance, and explores how the managerial power and network centrality affects enterprise’s innovation performance in big data environment. Considering about the differences among distinct regional big data environment (strong/weak), this paper also takes classification research on it. The research findings show that managerial power has a significant positive impact on innovation performance, managerial power could enhance enterprise’s centrality in network, and the enterprise which located in network central position has more advantages in obtaining resources and significantly improves firm’s innovation performance. Network centrality plays a mediating role on managerial power and innovation performance. Further research finds that the positive effects of managerial power and network centrality are more significantly in the strong big data environment. These findings enrich the research of high-tech enterprise innovation from a combinative governance view, and contribute to the literatures on enterprise innovation in big data environment. Collapse

Abstract: We study the impact of software-based innovation on the value of patented inventions, firms’ competitive position in the product market, and the market value of the firms in the U.S. information and technology (IT) hardware industry. Our analysis of over 227,000 patents by 741 public IT hardware firms in the period of 1996-2006 reveals several novel findings. Patented inventions with greater software intensity are more frequently cited and more likely to be renewed for legal protection. This effect is stronger for software patents than non-software patents, though it varies across firms depending on business scope and patent value measures. Increases in software innovation are associated with greater software contents in the subsequent period’s business profile while those of nonsoftware innovation orient business away from software-based products and services, and this pattern is particularly strong for pure IT hardware firms. Greater software innovation also drives the shift toward more software-intensive business, allowing firms to differentiate themselves from rivals in product and service offerings. This differentiation benefit appears unique to pure IT hardware firms. Despite the advantages of pure firms in software-enabled technological value creation and competitive positioning, diversified firms are no less likely to create firm value from software-based innovation. We find evidence that firms optimize their innovation strategies along the dimension of exploitation and exploration subject to their business scope constraints. Our study offers one of the first evidence that software innovation helps mitigate product market competition and thus substantiates a mechanism through which software-based innovation creates economic value. Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis study investigated the utilization of Facebook by local Korean governments for the purposes of tourism development. The results indicate that most local Korean governments actively manage online tools such as Facebook, to communicate with the public and offer a wide range of information to promote tourism. A notable finding is that the level of local governmental could affect the level of social networking site use for tourism. It is claimed that the varying level of social networking site use is because the scale of the tourism industry and the level of information and communication technology innovation could vary with different types of municipalities. Through network analyses, the study also shows that Korean local governments' Facebook pages are co-related in the Facebook system as part of a smart tourism ecosystem, and that the smart tourism ecosystem facilitated by Facebook offerings is associated with governmental utilization of Facebook for activating local tourism. Abstract: We suggest that firms' national institutional environments alter the logic of alliance partner selection and associated knowledge acquisition. We posit that cross-national variations in corporatist institutional structures (which reflect differences in underlying cooperative norms) influence the relative importance that firms place on a prospective partner's social value (evidenced from the partner's connectedness with members of its industry) and technological value (reflected in the technological complementarity and novelty of the partner's knowledge). We expect that as prospective partners' technological value increases, the probability of alliance formation increases the most for firms residing in less corporatist countries. Likewise, as prospective partners' social value increases, the probability of alliance formation increases the most for firms in more corporatist countries. We further argue that norms regarding knowledge acquisition within an alliance vary across countries, with deliberate learning approaches serving as the norm in less—not more—corporatist settings. We expect that such differences will lead to more immediate interpartner knowledge acquisition in less corporatist environments. Analysis of a longitudinal cross-national data set of alliances in the emergent fuel cell technology industry supports our arguments. Our findings highlight the significance of particular national institutions in specific organizational domains and the complementarity between institutional theory and other strategic resource-based perspectives in the context of interorganizational alliances. Abstract: Plentiful research suggests that embeddedness in alliance networks influences firms’ innovativeness. This research, however, has mostly overlooked the fact that interorganizational ties are themselves embedded within larger institutional contexts that can shape the effects of networks on organizational outcomes. We address this gap in the literature by arguing that national institutions affect the extent to which specific network positions, such as brokerage, influence innovation. We explore this idea in the context of corporatism, which fosters an institutional logic of collaboration that influences the broker’s ability to manage its partnerships and recombine the knowledge residing in its network as well as the extent of knowledge flows among network participants. We argue that differences in institutional logics lead brokerage positions to exert different effects on firm innovativeness. We propose that the firm spanning structural holes obtains the greatest innovation benefits when the firm (the broker) or its alliance partners are based in highly corporatist countries, or under certain combinations of broker and partner corporatism. We find support for these ideas through a longitudinal study of cross-border fuel cell technology alliance networks involving 109 firms from nine countries between 1981 and 2001. Collapse
