Abstract: Customer loyalty programs, the incentive structures designed to reward and retain customers for purchases and other activities, have struggled to maximize their intended goals. Academics and industry practitioners have advocated for the use of blockchain technology as a vehicle to revolutionize loyalty programs. Despite this hype, we have yet to see an examination of existing blockchain-based loyalty solutions. This paper identifies, reviews, and classifies tokenized loyalty solutions. Using a web-scraping method, we systematically retrieved 9,642 tokens listed on the coinmarketcap.com website. Multiple applications of inclusion/exclusion criteria resulted in 21 active loyalty programs based on blockchain, which we evaluated in depth. Our findings confirm that the domain is nascent yet more actualized than previous research has suggested. This analysis fills a much-needed role in the blockchain-loyalty literature by providing an industry lens into the realities of blockchain as a loyalty solution. Collapse

Abstract: The role played by decentralised services in the obfuscation of crypto-asset transactions performed on transparent blockchains has increasingly captured the attention of regulators. This is exemplified by the headlines about the U.S. Treasury's sanctions on the Ethereum-based mixer Tornado Cash. Yet, despite the existing controversies on the use of mixers, the different functionalities of these information systems with an inherent dark side remain to be explored by the literature. So far, contributions primarily encompass technical works and studies that focus on the Bitcoin ecosystem. This paper puts forward a multi-layer taxonomy of the smart-contract-based -and, therefore, functionally richer -family of mixers on Ethereum. Our proposed taxonomy is grounded on (1) a review of existing literature, (2) an analysis of mixers' project documentation, (3) their corresponding smart contracts, and (4) expert interviews. Our evaluation included the application of the taxonomy to two mixers -RAILGUN and zkBob. The taxonomy represents a valuable tool for law enforcement, regulators, and other stakeholders to explore critical properties affecting compliance and use of Ethereum-based mixers. Collapse

Abstract: The Crypto Winter of 2022 exposed multi-dimensional risks in the crypto ecosystem which extend beyond technical imperatives to include societal and institutional factors. A domino effect saw several major crypto firms losing large amounts of investor cash or becoming bankrupt. This practitioner focused study adopts a grounded methodology to gather empirical data from regulators, crypto firms, and investors on developing a policy framework for crypto assets. The case study context is the US regulatory environment. Findings show regulatory agencies face ideological, operational, and technical obstacles, as they engage in debates about the efficacy of competing regulatory scenarios. The paper presents two major tensions which require the attention of policy makers and legislators to mitigate future societal and institutional risks from crypto assets. Collapse

Abstract: Although the prices of cryptocurrencies remained volatile for the past decade, the factors that impact the price dynamics of the new type of investment instrument have not been fully identified yet. In this study, we recognize the dual nature of cryptocurrencies, that is, being a software program and a financial instrument, and examine the impact of software advancement on the price dynamics of cryptocurrencies. The open-source software (OSS) platform functionality enables social behaviors that we use as signals. Using data from the largest OSS platform, we establish the connection between open-source activities and the price movement of cryptocurrency. In particular, as project popularity (forks and watches) and users' feedback (issues) increase, the market price increases by 4.3 percent, 2.4 percent, and 4.4 percent per annum, respectively. On the contrary, the number of code corrections (pull requests) is negatively related to prices leading to a 5 percent annual price decrease. Our results suggest that OSS contributions create a perfect selection mechanism, where higher quality projects receive more developers' attention and user feedback, whereas lower quality projects do not, thus creating the separating equilibrium. Abstract: The transformative capacity of blockchain technology is a frequently debated topic in the information systems (IS) and practitioner literature. Yet, rigorous and design-driven research remains relatively uncommon. We document an ongoing design process towards a blockchain-based IT-artefact comprising financial infrastructure for stakeholders in emerging economies. Working with a young NGO, we utilize the design-science research methodology (DSR) in the design, implementation, and evaluation of the IT-artefact. The artefact enables stakeholders to conduct basic financial services by computing transactions, maintaining a savings account, and receiving targeted stimulus payments. Following six months of iterative design and development, we released a global pilot version of the artefact. Over the first nine months, the pilot generated a dataset of 6.6 million transactions amongst 189,379 verified users. By conducting design-driven research, we contribute novel practical insights to the IS discourse on the transformative capacity of blockchain technology and information communication technologies (ICT) in emerging economies. Abstract: Attempts to valuate personality and personal brand in the digital economy face significant problems when it comes to the tools of such an activity. The main aim of this paper is to consider a personal token as the new means of personality valuation and to propose tools of its financial and network valuation. We applied financial analysis, content analysis, and statistical analysis, using data from the platform dedicated to personal token issuers. Financial valuation of personal tokens was performed using a modified Network Value to Transaction ratio (NVT). The personality types of the tokenised persons were determined based on Bartle’s Four Player Types model and the Big Five Personality Traits model. The issuers of personal tokens were grouped with a use of clustering analysis and the differences in score on personality traits were tested accordingly. Our results uncovered the novel means of personality and personal brand valuation which is a personal token and allowed us to differentiate two groups of personal token issuers based on their personality traits and activity profile. Abstract: User-centric identity management systems are gaining momentum as concerns about Big Tech and Big Government rise. Many of these systems are framed as offering Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). Yet, competing appropriation and the social embedding of SSI have resulted in diverging interpretations. These vague and value-laden interpretations can damage the public discourse and risk misrepresenting values and affordances that technology offers to users. To unpack the various social and technical understandings of SSI, we adopt an ‘interpretive flexibility’ lens. Based on a qualitative inductive interview study, we find that SSI’s interpretation is strongly mediated by surrounding institutional properties. Our study helps to better navigate these different perceptions and highlights the need for a multidimensional framework that can improve the understanding of complex socio-technical systems for digital government practitioners, researchers, and policy-makers.
