From semantics to pragmatics: where IS can lead in Natural Language Processing (NLP) research

Abstract: Natural Language Processing (NLP) is now widely integrated into web and mobile applications, enabling natural interactions between humans and computers. Although there is a large body of NLP studies published in Information Systems (IS), a comprehensive review of how NLP research is conceptualised and realised in the context of IS has not been conducted. To assess the current state of NLP research in IS, we use a variety of techniques to analyse a literature corpus comprising 356 NLP research articles published in IS journals between 2004 and 2018. Our analysis indicates the need to move from semantics to pragmatics. More importantly, our findings unpack the challenges and assumptions underlying current research trends in NLP. We argue that overcoming these challenges will require a renewed disciplinary IS focus. By proposing a roadmap of NLP research in IS, we draw attention to three NLP research perspectives and present future directions that IS researchers are uniquely positioned to address. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations are using digital tools to support workplace health promotion (WHP) initiatives. This study investigates the effects of a mobile health (mHealth) application on employee behaviour and wellness. This exploratory, empirical case study was conducted as part of an established workplace health initiative in the Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland, April 2018. User data on exercise including daily activity in the form of steps taken, mood, total daily exercise, and other variables were captured as part of the ‘Steps to Health Challenge’. Phase 1 of the study involved the collection of user data from 70 active app users and a survey was conducted. The majority of participants found that the mHealth app motivated them to sustain, and in some cases increase, their daily steps. Phase 2 involved interviews. Following qualitative data analysis, we found that the app positively effected employee behaviour; specific features were highlighted as especially influential. Collapse

Abstract: On-demand ride (ODR) services are expanding and becoming more influential globally because of the rapid growth in the use of mobile devices. ODR services are creating new business models and opportunities and reshaping transportation markets. This study used KakaoTaxi, a popular ODR service in Korea, to examine how customers evaluate an ODR service and determine whether customers are willing to reuse such a service. In the first-stage qualitative study, we explored decisional factors by conducting interviews with customers of the ODR service. In the second-stage quantitative study, we interpreted these previously explored decisional factors and developed a research model by applying the customer value theory. Going beyond previous research, the meta-inferences from the qualitative and quantitative studies explain how customers decide to reuse an ODR service. This study also informs ODR service providers of marketing strategies to leverage these key decisional factors in the reuse of an ODR service. Collapse

Abstract: Despite predictions to the contrary, telecommuting programs are gaining in strength. While research has explored many aspects of telecommuting, little is known about telecommuter performance appraisals and supervisor-related factors such as relationship with supervisor, location of supervisor, or frequency of face-toface contact. Using data from semi-structured interviews with 20 telecommuters, this exploratory pilot study addresses questions regarding the types of appraisal processes in place, employee’s feelings towards those processes, as well as the importance of frequency of contact and location of supervisor in the relationship with the supervisor.
