Abstract: This paper explores the potential of voice assistants (VAs) as influencers and their ability to replace or complement human influencers. VAs are increasingly popular tools for marketing and advertising, providing access to a wide range of information services. VA recommendations have been found to be more effective than consumer reviews in changing consumer behavior when perceived as credible and useful. Nevertheless, existing research has not explored the full potential of VAs in influencing consumer behavior beyond these factors. This paper identifies relevant behavioral factors that affect consumers' decisions to follow VA recommendations. An empirical study of 510 participants revealed that parasocial relationships, peer influence, self-image congruence, and interpersonal attraction positively affect consumers' decisions to follow product purchase recommendations by VAs. The findings extend our understanding of consumers' behavior towards VAs and provide theoretical and practical implications for marketing and information systems research. Collapse

Abstract: Conversational AI agents are fundamentally changing how firms are delivering service to their customers. The rapid advancement of technology and ready tools means that deploying a conversational AI agent has become far simpler than ever imagined. However, customers remain unsatisfied with their experience and firms are unable to demonstrate value of conversational AI agents. Drawing on the theoretical notions of customer experience (CX) management, personalization, and AI in service, we develop a framework to design conversational AI agents. We propose a six-stage iterative design for conversational AI agents that begins with sensing customer intent, adapting to journey context, assigning tone to the conversation, delegating to humans, orchestrating processes to service requests and training of AI agents to adaptively improve and loopback into prior design stages. Additionally, we recognize that firms need to holistically qualify and allocate service requests to such conversational AI agents based on the firm's purpose and CX strategy. Collapse

Abstract: Electronic health records (EHR) have significantly amplified the volume of information accessible in the healthcare sector. Nevertheless, this information load also translates into elevated workloads for clinicians engaged in extracting and generating patient information. Natural Language Process (NLP) aims to overcome this problem by automatically extracting and structuring relevant information from medical texts. While other methods related to artificial intelligence have been implemented successfully in healthcare (e.g., computer vision in radiology), NLP still lacks commercial success in this domain. The lack of a structured overview of NLP systems is exacerbating the problem, especially with the emergence of new technologies like generative pre-trained transformers. Against this background, this paper presents a taxonomy to inform integration decisions of NLP systems into healthcare IT landscapes. We contribute to a better understanding of how NLP systems can be integrated into daily clinical contexts. In total, we reviewed 29 papers and 36 commercial NLP products. Collapse

Abstract: The main protagonist in Kazuo Ishiguro's latest novel is Klara, an artificial friend whose existential goal is to be a child's companion. Some aspects of this fictional narrative have begun to gradually enter our daily lives. Products reminiscent of Klara are available abundantly on the market: smart toys, adaptive learning applications, and companion robots. Children can relate to these products and perform activities together with them. Preliminary research has shown fundamental differences between existing technologies and these emerging children's digital companions. However, we still do not know much about their benefits and risks. This paper explores different and even contradicting perspectives on the phenomenon. We present the discussion from four perspectives -1) temporality, 2) use, 3) trust and ethics, and 4) sociotechnical design -and conclude the paper with an agenda for interdisciplinary IS research. The agenda points to the need for a psychological, medical, engineering, and temporal research community to understand this emerging sociotechnical phenomenon and design its future for the better. Abstract: Psychology research reveals that humans possess innate principles that govern how we make sense of objects and object-directed actions. These principles are embedded in interrelated systems of core knowledge that shape behavior. This paper theorizes how the innate principles embedded in two core knowledge systems—the system of object representation and the agent system—play a crucial role in shaping how a technology user conceives of and carries out an object-directed action through a digital object and its embedded features. The theorization is instantiated in the context of IS research through a framework we call the user-object action scene, which comprises four interrelated elements: the user, the goal-object/goal-agent, the object-approach, and the goal environment. We conclude by encouraging IS researchers to revisit established IS theories through the lens of innate principles, and provide guidance on how to use innate principles to reexamine two IS theories: technology acceptance and technostress. Abstract: While implementing with caution, Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds potential to help nations address pressing social issues, such as homelessness, climate change, and healthcare accessibility. With the existing and potential economic and social benefits of AI, it is crucial to integrate AI learning in undergraduate education. This paper presents the preliminary findings of a course project that engages students to learn AI by prototyping solutions to address important social issues in their communities among 120 undergraduate MIS students. Students worked in groups and developed chatbots that addressed a variety of community issues during . A survey study shows students' enhanced understanding and mastery of AI concepts and applications, empowerment of contributing to their communities through AI innovation, and an emerging awareness of diversity, equity, and ethical issues in the community and AI technologies. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming pervasive across industries, making it important for management information systems (MIS) students to understand the ethical issues involved. We present an active learning approach to teaching the fast-changing topic of AI ethics using a debate format. This approach was piloted in an undergraduate MIS course of 30 students. Over a five-week period, student teams were assigned to argue either the opportunities (pro) or dangers (con) viewpoint for five different AI technologies. A post-project survey indicated this format helps students gain a better understanding of the applications, opportunities, and potential misuse of AI. Students found this to be an engaging and fun way to explore the multiple dimensions of AI ethics that also required them to employ critical thinking, collaboration, research, and communication skills. We share our findings about the benefits of co-creating knowledge in the classroom using a debate format to explore an evolving topic. Collapse

Abstract: Governments have been publishing Open Government Data (OGD) on online portals to encourage the development of value-added services. The success of these services depends heavily on the quality of OGD and its metadata. Several methods have been proposed to evaluate this quality, but some rely on manual assessments, which can be time-consuming and expensive to perform. Furthermore, these methods focus on the portal rather than the data, ignore user preferences, or do not distinguish between metadata and data quality. This makes it difficult for users to identify data quality issues. This paper proposes a list of OGD quality dimensions for assessing data and metadata quality. The dimensions were identified through a literature review and integrated into a novel conversational agent that incorporates user preferences into the quality assessment. A usability evaluation with 14 users reveals its ease of use and usefulness for obtaining overall and detailed (meta)data quality. Collapse

Abstract: Fractional ownership makes homeownership more affordable. But there are challenges in a fractional ownership real estate transaction (FORET) regarding governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) processes. Centralized GRC solutions are less effective in managing the tiered structure of communications in a FORET, which can lead to principal-agent problems such as information asymmetry, risk aversion, and moral hazard. In this research we investigate how these principal-agent problems in FORET could be mitigated. Using an agency theory perspective, we adopt a design science multimethodological research approach. We propose conceptual and system artefacts to support the design and implementation of a decentralized autonomous agent system. These artefacts deliver a formal problem representation structure related to centralized GRC in fractional ownership. We illustrate our solution with a system prototype and implementation. We evaluate the research outputs and compare them with existing GRC systems. This paper contributes to the understanding of GRC in supporting fractional ownership decision making. Collapse

Abstract: Human facilitators face the challenge to structure and collect relevant insights from collaborative creative work sessions, which can suffer if they face a high workload. Hence, for effective value co-creation in organizational ideation we suggest an facilitation augmentation with a conversational agent (CA). CAs have the ability to support respective collaborative work by documenting and analyzing unstructured data. Following the design science research paradigm, and based on the literature about facilitation and human-AI collaboration, we derive design principles to develop a CA prototype that collects ideas from a group ideation session and displays them back in a structured (multi-modal) manner. We evaluate the CA by conducting four focus groups. Key findings show that the CA successfully distills and enriches information. Our study contributes to understanding the role of CA in augmenting facilitation and it provides guidance for practice on how to integrate these technologies in group meetings. Collapse
